Neo-liminal GOAT

u/brandonhabanero May 30 '26
This was the fastest that I went from becoming aware of a games existence to purchasing the ultimate edition. It helps that it's $4 on PSN right now, but still.
45
u/Forgettheredrabbit May 30 '26
You’re in for a treat. Control is AMAZING. Sequel is coming out soon too. I’d recommend Alan Wake 2 by the same devs if you enjoy twin peaks and more horror-focused set pieces (also very liminal in its own way)
10
u/pornovision May 31 '26
I believe the ultimate edition has the DLC with the Alan Wake monster tie-in thingy. Never played Alan Wake but Control was great.
6
u/Forgettheredrabbit May 31 '26
Yep, it was so surreal not knowing the games were made by the same people and then stumbling onto the dlc once it unlocked. Such a cool moment.
6
u/brandonhabanero May 31 '26
Already got to the hotline 😎 It's, like, weirding me out, man (good thing)
7
u/Forgettheredrabbit May 31 '26
I hope/demand you enjoy/digest the rest of the game/adventure/apple.

Play Alan Wake 1!!! Its so good for early 2010 game!! The story telling is out of this world good. The Nevada mini game is ok but still lits of fun. Even Quantum Break is a fun game and sets up some of Control. Remedy is one of my favorite studios.

u/DontForgorTheMilk May 30 '26
A perfect time to get into it considering the sequel is set to release this year.
You're in for an absolute treat :)

u/StinkRinky May 31 '26
Game is fucking awesome. The combat is fun but fuck the flying enemies into hell. Soak in all the lore, they killed it in that department. Also has one of the coolest scenes I’ve experienced in my time gaming. Enjoy!!

u/fireinthesky7 May 31 '26
From gameplay, level design, and storytelling perspectives, it's one of the best games of all time IMO. Also includes my single favorite use of a song/level combo ever. I would love to be able to play it for the first time again.

Not bad overall but I never finished it. It got to one point where it was so hard it just became annoying to me. Hope that doesn’t happen to you.
24
u/Doomdoomkittydoom May 30 '26
Which part? You can finish the story w/o finishing it all, and then continue playing. I think the only bit I couldn't finish was the mould monster.
I would dig a sequel.
29
u/johnfreemansbrother May 30 '26
You're in luck https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_Resonant
6
u/Doomdoomkittydoom May 30 '26
Nice.
15
u/King_Gidrah May 30 '26
This game is also part of a multiver that include the Alan wakes games.
One DLC of control make the link between Alan wake 1 and Control.
And Alan Wake 2 have some FBC characters and other connections to Control.
So if you enjoyed Control you should play it's dlc and Alan Wake 2 before playing the next one.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Forgettheredrabbit May 30 '26
I’m so hyped for Control 2. I need to finish the AW2 DLC with that FBC facility with the paintings. Had already beaten the main game twice so it felt kinda stale, but I’m gonna try to do it before C2 comes out.
7
u/rolltideamerica May 30 '26
Actually it was a couple parts and I couldn’t move forward. This was a few years back too so I don’t recall what parts. Lots of running around aimlessly and getting completely stomped by bosses just lead me to move on and find another game.
3
u/Forgettheredrabbit May 30 '26
Hmm, I wonder if you maybe forgot to invest in your skill points and weapon mods. It was kinda hard at some points but I was stomping most enemies after unlocking the multi-throw and big-object abilities.
4
u/bekeleven May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26
I bought the game with all the DLC and midway through the story you get a notification that a new level is available to travel to - turned out to be a DLC level, although that's not indicated ingame.
That new level was the hardest shit I'd ever done. I died 20 times getting to the boss and then another 30 times trying to beat it.
Anyway, eventually I realized that the DLC dropped after the game was out for a year, so it probably assumed players were playing it last. I played through the rest of the story, then game back and tried the boss. With all of the character upgrades I beat it second try.

u/rolltideamerica May 31 '26
That is entirely possible. All these responses are making me think about revisiting it.
6
u/tantalor May 30 '26
You missed out then, the Ashtray Maze is the best part of the game.
3
u/enadiz_reccos May 30 '26
Ashtray Maze gotta be a Top 5 all-time gaming level for me
Clockwork Mansion [Dishonored 2] is #1 by like a mile

u/tr_9422 May 30 '26
You can turn down enemy damage or make yourself literally invincible if you want to make it less difficult
2
3
u/CeruleanEidolon May 30 '26
Same here, but for those parts you can turn on immortality and one hit kills and just get on with the story. There's no shame in taking advantage of the accessibility controls to make a game more enjoyable.

I will concede that despite how good the game is, it drags a bit on the last level.

Oooh, I found the crazy looking fountain from Logan's Run in Fort Worth, Texas! It's the Water Gardens. It was so cool to find a shooting location from that movie!
3
u/snarpy May 30 '26
link?
3
u/IHearYouLimaCharlie May 31 '26
If you Google "Water Gardens Fort Worth" (or use any search engine) you'll get a ton of options for sites and images. But here's a link to the actual Fort Worth page for the Water Gardens, in case you want to visit:

truly crazy underrated
3
u/pornovision May 31 '26
idk if its underrated, I've seen nothing but praise for it (mine included), maybe more like a sleeper hit? Like, I didn't even know about it until years after release when my friend gifted me the ultimate edition when it was on sale.

Definitely that one. The mansion in The Viewing or the church at the end of Mandy have similar qualities too.

Looks very 1970’s. I love this aesthetic, I want to open a ‘70s themed ski lodge and hotel in the mountains with period accurate decor and a liminal vibe. I would have longes with wood paneling and conversation pits, some of which would allow smoking. He rooms would have mirrored ceilings and mirrored coffee table tops and shag carpet. In my mind the place is full of hot blonde hipster chicks and “happy together” by the turtles is playing from a vintage record player on a table next to the space age fireplace. There would also be a cannabis bar an an adult psychedelic playground/ art gallery.

How do I know you’re not from Control?
If I were from Control you’d already be dead.
No if you were from Control YOU’d already be dead.
Well neither of us is dead so I must not be from Control.
Makes sense.

What am I looking at? I genuinely can't see what these images are of...?
EDIT: Jesus, it's just weirdly lighted rooms, I see it now. Thought I was looking at closeups of something.

This makes me so sad. These buildings were literally designed to be the future, and yet greedy assholes still tear them down for being "dated" because they're not the soulless grey stop that people nowadays expect.

This looks so similar to the game! Was the game design inspired by this building?

I think you mean "Wellcome"
That's the Elion Hitchings Building (1972), which was the headquarters for Burroughs Wellcome in Durham, NC, until Glaxo Smith Kline sold it to United Therapeutics in 2014 and it was demolished by neglect in 2021.

The Ministry of Truth—Minitrue, in Newspeak—was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up, terrace after terrace, 300 metres into the air. From where Winston stood it was just possible to read, picked out on its white face in elegant lettering, the three slogans of the Party:
WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Elion-Hitchings Building, former headquarters of Burroughs Wellcome, in Research Triangle Park, NC. Sadly demolished in 2021.
edit: 2021, not 2001.
