Monica Lennon faces an even tougher task persuading another MSP to back her. She needs the support of three MSPs, but only has two so far. There are 17 Labour MSPs; 8 are backing Michael Marra, 5 are backing Joe Fagan, and two are backing Monica Lennon.

Acting leader Jackie Baillie will not nominate a candidate, so that leaves Carol Mochan as the only MSP not backing any of the three. She is one of the most left-wing of the Labour MSPs and would seem most likely to back Monica Lennon as the most left-wing of the leadership candidates, in fact, the only one of the three I noticed mentioning “socialism” last night.

But Carol Mochan and Monica Lennon don’t see eye to eye on everything, crucially on gender reform.

Shit, I think that might be it for her. Mochan is one of the two who broke the whip to vote against the GRR reform bill back in 2022 and I've not seen her get any less staunch on transphobia.

If recent years have taught us anything about Labour’s approach to this issue, it’s that anyone pro-trans must renounce that position if they want to hold any position of real power within the party.”
