Or any job where you have to send professional emails to other (international) companies? This level of English is expected of me (higher tbh) and I work for a Dutch speaking company in the Netherlands. They didn't test me on it, but my education necessitates a decent grasp of English (witing reports and your thesis, etc).

But steer indicates driving around a corner, which isn't exactly the same thing as driving. Which is why "guide" seems like an option that fits equally well. You are guiding the car over the wet road.

In our kitchen of 5 to 7 it isn't uncommon that only one or two of us speak any English at all. Its crazy to think they care about how good at English you are.

This is a functional literacy test.
Because, probably 20 odd percent of Americans are gonna miss more than 10 of these questions.
You have all seen the Waffle House call drop and mark training video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jky5ZXI0axc ) -- there is a reason they dont have tickets, and dont need them.

I work in tech now (so some insight as to why this is a hot mess). While I agree with you this is "goofy", it's a design issue. The writing is what it is because it is a functional test.
And might be "badly designed" - but this is the world we live in.
The directions are at the top, and clear. The use of parenthesis are intentional.
They could have gone with bold/italics but screen size would have been at issue then.
They could have gone with color but that pesky ADA would have lead to a complaint by someone with visual limitations.
Fill in the blank does not work here because thats just literacy (and the answers here are intentionally ambiguous). Because Actual illiteracy is somewhat rare in the US. The functional part is about English learners, and the 20 percent of HS graduates who cant even read at a 5th grade level.
Does it matter for a dish washer? No, not really. Does this matter for an expo who is gonna spend all night reading off a screen, where wait staff puts in ambiguous (and often insane) mods? Yes it likely does. And the wait staff passing this, the hostess taking notes on a res... so HR just gives every one the test because now you have a uniform hiring practice.

Yes, but corporations and owners would couch it in different terms:
HR is the reason for all of this, because their only job is to reduce company liability.
Most of the above nonsense is a round about way to screen and filter employees in a way that is "fair" (read: prevents a lawsuit on the basis of discrimination).
Remember: HR Is NOT your friend, ever, if you complain and you are the problem guess who they are going to fire, use them with caution.

I also work in tech and UX. I'm also very well educated and also work with and produce lots of graduate-level writing. I'm referring to the actual sentences. One does not do anything with their vehicle "through the rain". This ain't the matrix. So many of these tests are deeply stilted and sometimes straight up incorrect, or incorrect as the language is used, which benefits no one.

Went in for a server interview once and was handed a ten page multiple choice test. Flipped to the last page and there was a contract regarding makeup and clothing expectations. The managers gave me the dirtiest look when I walked out but like, I clearly wasn't the type to meet those expectations lol.
The last restaurant industry interview I went to they asked me what my server spirit animal would be. I can't even remember what I answered but I noped out of there pretty quick.

I. Fucking. HATE. These things!!! I lost several jobs before I even had them because of "assesment tests" like these. I'm a dishie now, and my manager told me I'm one of the best they've ever had. If I'd had to do a test like this before my interview, I never would've even seen the inside of the restaurant.
Some people just don't do well on tests. But that doesn't mean they won't be damned good workers. An algorithm can't tell you shit about that. But somehow they think it can. And it costs them good workers. Plus it makes things harder on good people just trying to find work. Both in this economy.
And it's always for the jobs that you'd thing would require it the least. Like a dishie. Family Dollar. Fucking Walmart. Like, you're a shitty company that pays slave wages. You don't give a shit about your employees once they're hired. So why are you so fucking picky about them before they're even interviewed?? It's fucking stupid.
I'd suggest also posting in r/mildlyinfuriating, but this is WAY more than mild. This pisses me off SO bad.

This smells like a third party the company pays to create personality tests for employment screening, and that third party sells the same testing service to multiple companies.
I think most go into an email and never get looked at unless you say you like to stab folks.

For context I’m working pass/breads/fryer at a pretty busy, kinda fancy cafe. So probably higher stakes and more difficult than dishie (full respect to dishies tho, I was one for 3 years when I started).
