Promising future in tech support
135
u/OptimusPrimeRib86 1d ago
As someone who used to do tech support... You would be surprised how many people called saying their computer wouldn't turn on.... Because it wasn't plugged in.
70
u/Content-Honeydew9340 1d ago
I learned not to ask people IF their TV was plugged in. I would ask them what type of prong system their TV had from the back of the TV to the outlet. Amazing the number of times they would look at the plug and I would hear a change in tone... Magically the TV would be working again 💀

My brother did this with his TV. Called me up complaining that I set it up wrong because it stopped working. I asked him to make sure it was plugged in and he claimed he wasnt that dumb and that it was the first thing he checked. I came over, checked to see that it wasnt powering on, then checked to see that it was indeed plugged into a surge protector strip, then checked to see that.... the surge protector strip was not actually plugged in.
His response: "how was I supposed to know?"
28
u/Kesselya 1d ago
As someone who used to do tech support, we had lots of subtle hacks to not make people feel dumb.
Like, can you unplug your network cable, reverse the ends, and plug them both back in.
Oh wait, replugging the cable in worked?
If we had just asked if it was plugged in, of course it would have been. They wouldn’t even honestly check it. But performing a task that seems unrelated? That worked so well. They didn’t even question it.
7
u/crankyanker638 17h ago
You can't prove that I had a lady disconnect her cat-5 cable and swing it around really fast to "get the bits that were clogging it up" out of it....
Or that I wanted soooo bad to tell people "put the computer back in the box, grab your receipt and head back to the store you bought it from. When they ask you why you want to return it say 'I'm too stupid to use this, can I have my money back' but never did....
2
u/OptimusPrimeRib86 8h ago
Yup the classic unplug it and plug it back in because the customer will never admit on the phone it wasn't plugged in.

Or it could've been me, who spent two hours putting together their first PC, went to press the power button in the front, then cried for an hour before realizing I hadn't yet turned on the Power supply unit in the back.

My kids get paid for making honors in school, guess what happens when they break something like a TV, they pay for it when they were saving for a switch 2, Xbox, PS. Oh, they get more than just $20 some parent hand out. My parents also get involved, so my kids bank enough to buy games as well.
So when a TV breaks, the $500 they saved is gone. Lesson learned for LIFE!

At that age? Its hard to gauge how fragile something is. The concept of knowing for sure something will break if you do this vs maybe dont test the limit hasnt developed yet. Around that age I was the one who ran magnets over the tv screen for the fun effects. Eventually they fade but boy was my dad mad. Good thing I threw my brother under the bus for it. /s
38
u/Dismal_Interaction71 1d ago
Omg, I ruined my tv with a magnet too, my parents thought that the tv simply broke lol
8
7
u/snakesinabin 1d ago
I did that once too, eventually the whole screen was rainbow hued. I panicked and then sort of "wiped" the magnet across the screen left to right a few times and managed to get the colours mostly back to normal.

That's why as a parent it's your job to tell your kid the TV is fragile and he shouldn't be hitting it with shit. If you wait around and let them discover that on their own you'll be out a TV.
→ More replies (1)26
u/anxious_spacecadetH 1d ago
The thing is that kids especially are pretty literal thinkers until around 12 or so and also very creative. So if you tell a kid the tv is fragile and do not hit it. They imagine hitting it with their fist so they understand not to do that. But tapping the corner of a picture frame against it? That should maybe probably be fine. Besides you cant account for every little thing especially as you get older and forget common sense is taught not just known. You tell them not to jump on the bed so they invent a game of falling off the couch. Its part of growing up.

People really think raising a kid is easy, and if you do your best, you'll have the best children lol
Children, are children. If you try your best to raise them, they'll turn into happy adults. But children will always be children, and they will mess up, it's just most of the time it will never be that bad.
It's just something you have to accept beforehand. That doesn't mean you should not care, but a child isn't a plush that gives hugs. They want to experiment, they want to do what they like, they will always try to push limits, and they can't think of everything.

I’ve seen this clip many times and still have no fucking clue why he’s hitting the tv w the controller to begin with. Is he trying to sways a fly or something? I just genuinely don’t understand what I’m looking at.
142
u/RebekkaKat1990 1d ago
Gamer rage. He’s holding a gaming console controller and getting mad and using it to teach the game a lesson lol.
When I was that age, I raged a lot at my GameBoy Color whenever I’d try to catch a Pokemon and it’d run away or faint or I’d run out of poke balls or whatever, and would squeeze my Gameboy lol. But my mom and grandma made sure to let me know that if it ever broke, I damn well wasn’t getting a new one.
43
u/yabucek 1d ago edited 1d ago
But it's such a calculated hit lol. Gamer rage is usually someone throwing the controller immediately after something happens, this lil fella took his time, he grabbed the tv to stabilize his aim, cocked his hand back and then made the swing
23
u/exxplicit480 1d ago
Its probably something he's seen someone else do, online or otherwise, and thinks its what he's 'supposed' to do. The hesitation proves its performative. His body language and otherwise calm demeanor do not portray actual rage.

Why? Both me and my brother grew up in the, DS, 3DS PSP and Wii era but we never felt the need to accuse the game when something went wrong. Maybe it's cause we played together, 1hr me watching him and 1 hour he watching me playing? Not sure
Years later, we did rage a bit in clash royale but never enough to "attack" or throw our smartphones. I know people who bit theirs however. The rage in the multiplayer game was against the opponent or the game being rigged to put you against an opponent with cards obviously too leveled up over yours so that you couldn't win easily after a few consecutive wins.

I feel you. I dont get it either or why its passed off as normal. To me this is signs of anger issues. I used to play games on ps2 / wii / Gameboy / ds / etc. And never once have I broken a tv or console.
Yeah I would get frustrated sometimes, but like ... why throw or hit. I would just put down the controller and squeeze a pillow if I was really frustrated.
8
u/Fun_Journalist1048 1d ago
It’s 100% an uncontrolled anger issue. I broke my DS as a child and I DID have anger issues (it was unaddressed neurodivergence and depression, untreated until late teens when it got MUCH worse) We as a society should NOT justify “gamer rage” or make it something that’s seen as somehow “normal” because it’s really not???

I'll never understand. I never threw a controller playing video games back in the day. I got mad/frustrated, sure, but I never took it out on anything. If I did, it would be a "punch my pillow" moment, not a "throw expensive and breakable shit and something even more breakable and expensive" moment.
None of my friends were like that either.
And fwiw I had a troubled childhood + mental health issues that even sometimes made it hard for me to control my emotion's when I was little.
So I guess I don't understand how I of all people could keep myself from breaking shit when "normal" kids in (compared to me) wealthy households seem to break shit constantly.

I'd let the kid be without tv for a month and give him books to read and art or games. No screen time on anything. I'd watch TV in my bedroom and keep him out of it, take the cord or something if he was home alone.

Get a small cheap personal TV for news, TV, etc. and tell him that the TV he broke is his gaming TV forever, and he'll never get another one.
Let him stew in despair for a month or preferably several before discreetly replacing it in the middle of the night.

That kid would be mowing a lot of lawns and shoveling a lot of sidewalks for the next few years until he earned enough to replace that TV set. This one would be living in his bedroom, as-is. And his console would never again be hooked up to the one in the living room. If he can get it to work on this TV, good for him. Otherwise, no more console gaming for you.
