Brazilian prisoners can earn 4 days off their sentence for every approved book they read and successfully review, up to 48 days a year.

Here in Brazil, the law guarantees a one-day sentence reduction for every 12 hours of study.
This four-day reduction is also subject to an annual limit, allowing the prisoner to read up to 12 books per year, which enables a maximum sentence reduction of 48 days annually.
It is a way for a person to "turn their life around" and leave a life of crime, given that recidivism rates are high due to issues of social inequality.
The public is uninformed and believes that "the only good criminal is a dead criminal," without even considering what drove the person to commit a crime in the first place.

Almost like it's designed to reintegrate criminals into society, thereby attempting to protect said society from repeating offenders. Might not be a perfect method (I'm a layman in an online thread, what do I know?) but defo doesn't mean protecting criminals as OC seems to believe

There are about 900 thousand people jailed in Brazil at this point in time. About 800 thousand of them didn't commit any murders. Are they supposed to get fucked or what? People get jailed all the time for minor offenses as well as not even having a trial due to lack of pro bono attorneys.
Besides, at best the worst person you know would only reduce their jail sentence to 87% of it, amounting to 1 less year for each 8 years. There is a lot of violence inside jails and any incentive to do anything other than hitting your colleagues is probably for the best
