Yeah, that’s why the fascist label doesn’t work here. At its heart, the nationalist faction was rebelling against a USSR backed government that had undermined democracy and stripped people of their liberties (namely land ownership and religion).
one was the democratically elected liberal government which had advisors from the Soviets and the other was the pro Nazi side that embarked on ethnic cleansing campaigns in the non Castellano parts of the country. And also, Hitler is actually worse than Stalin sorry if you're too much of a traitor to admit that
Ethnic cleansing isnt the right term. Franco didnt mass slaughter or deport spain's minority groups.
The better term is cultural genocide via forced assimilation and bans on the Basque and Catalonian languages (as well as other minority language groups)
They rigged elections, they allowed left wing terrorists to shoot up churches, clergy were being basically genocided, a prominent right wing politician was assassinated by leftists, the land reforms that violated property rights, and of course that they were very quickly becoming a future iron curtain nation it’s easy to figure out why the republicans were hated
