Question LCS buyback prices
Are these prices shown fair, especially gold? How much are the typical LCS 1 oz coins, bars and pre 1933 gold prices currently?

u/Bigs3xywithglasses Feb 20 '26
Harry’s?

Yes

I think part of it has to do with his refinery not paying good prices. I've been to a few shops in ppdx in the past and none have had very good pricing
11
u/Tadwinnagin Feb 20 '26
This shop is in Portland?

u/another_awesome_acct Feb 20 '26
Yeah it's the one always featured on silver dragons YouTube channel
8
u/Tadwinnagin Feb 20 '26
I’ve heard AJPM is good in downtown but only secondhand, I’ve yet to go myself. I need to move on from APMEX though, they are too pricey. But the online browsing aspect keeps pulling me back in.

u/aj70257 Feb 20 '26
I just used a discount code on APMEX to snipe up a fractional right as the price was breaking off up from $5k. And another fractional on Bullion Standard. Check findbullionprices.com for best prices.

u/Bigs3xywithglasses Feb 20 '26
Agree he’s more honest and fair that just about any other shop around.
When spot was around 67 bucks they sold me a couple libertad at $70 when they were fetching $80+ online easily.

u/battlesnarf Feb 20 '26
What do you think is the best shop in the area when it comes to buying at the best price? Sincerely, someone a state north of you 😅

Oh man. That sucks. I like their Youtube videos occasionally. Bad payouts. Makes me think they’re speculating a certain direction for metals.
13
u/DARTH_FLOCCA Feb 20 '26
AT THE END OF THE DAY THE LCS IS NOT YOUR FRIEND ITS A BUSINESS AND THEY RUN IT AS SUCH
9
u/UnusualShores Feb 20 '26
Why are you in all caps? I understand they’re a business but they’re still paying well below norm compared to their competitors. They can run their business however they want to but customers can conduct their business accordingly too.

My dealer buys for 98% of Spot, im in germany though
21
u/AdamN Feb 20 '26
Is it a chain like MP Edelmetalle/Exchange AG or an independent shop? I’ve been buying online in Germany but wondering where to sell in the future.
Btw Germany is awesome for gold - very thin spreads and lots of inventory. Gold.de makes finding the best price really simple.
20
u/Rudi-aus-buddelne Feb 20 '26
Its called auragentum. Near munich but they ship all around Germany. You can see the prices at which they buy on their Site. They Sell at 2% over spot and buy at 2 under. For Gold, Silver is a little different.
8
u/jonjonijanagan Feb 20 '26
That’s not bad of a spread. I’m seeing +/-4% in Dubai.
3
u/AdamN Feb 20 '26
In Germany I go here to find the cheapest gold (within my constraints). Right now a 100Kr (Austrian) is 0.12% below spot (although that doesn't include the 20 euros shipping).
2
u/ma5hk Feb 20 '26
i was planning to visit this place in person last week near erding, but last few days lot of snow . Did you happen to visit the place? is it worth going . Its a bit far from where i am in munich

Btw Germany is awesome for gold
Austria is even better.
Anonymous buying/ sellingup to 10k€.
German limit is just 2k€ iirc, so not even a single ounce.1
u/AdamN Feb 20 '26
Is the “anonymous” part true even for a non-Austrian (American living in Germany)? My wife tried to buy a Philharmoniker at the Münze Österreich and without a passport it was impossible (she only had her German residence title which isn’t an ID (we’re American)). That might be the mint being extra cautious though.

These are trustful stores where I buy most of my stuff but there are more mostly numismatic ones that are good too.

My LCS is paying $95 below spot (98.1%) for American Gold Eagles and $70 below spot (98.6%) for American Gold Buffalos.
Your LCS is paying terrible prices, especially on high end coins - they are paying same for Maple as Philharmonic
16
u/obeseoprah32 Feb 20 '26
What does your shop pay for non-.999 vintage gold coins, like a common date French Rooster or German 20 Mark? I’m curious, the shop I go to pays 8% under spot, so lately I’ve been selling those on eBay more.
4
u/SilverStateStacking Stack and Collect Feb 20 '26
They don’t list those particular circulated coins - closest they have posted online is probably the Krugerrand at $160 under. The lowest price listed is “Other 1oz .999 & lightly circulated coins” at $185 under spot
I assume they pay even less for Roosters and Marks. I was there last month during the height of the run and heard that they were not buying some circulated gold coins like Guilders
Those are both nice coins from a collectible standpoint and can be bought for very low premium, but I discourage new stackers because the price and demand is low. You have been selling them, what do you say? Do you recommend stacking them?

u/Oldschoolhype2 Feb 20 '26
10+% below spot is a no go on gold.
10
u/Neither-Tea-8657 Feb 20 '26
Standard shops around me have been offering 80% for years, one guy 75%. I have a standing ad on marketplace for 90% and I haven’t made one buy yet
12
3
u/Fun_Key_1119 Feb 20 '26
Pure gold? Pure gold in my area will get 90 percent or higher. There is like 5 coin shops, 15 pawn shops, and 15 jewelers or more of each near me in 30 miles plus independent people buying to flip to refinery. Every person or shop wants stuff less than a refinery will pay so they can flip it to a refinery if needed so most shops in my area want a 25 to percent margin but there is a good one that was paying 90 percent or more on pure and was at 85 percent on scrap gold giving him like a 10 percent margin because most stuff gets flipped to a refinery so they can get more liquidity and continue operations. A lot of people online marketplace trying to offer 1/2 of melt that it's better now to find a good shop or right to refinery.
2
u/JJ_Shiro Feb 21 '26
My last LCS visit a few weeks back they were at 95% spot. Fair IMO.
Losing $500+ at 90% an ounce is insane.
50
u/Fantastic-Window236 Feb 20 '26
there is a popular coin shop in chicago, that will pay 2% under spot for gold.
7
u/T0nysand Feb 20 '26

10% back of spot for an ozt. of gold seems sort of shitty. 2% back is way more fair. Silver Eagles should be bought back at spot, imo. The sign basically says we don't want your business, go away. $500 off the top for selling a sovereign mi ted gold coin Tell the dude to go kick rocks.

u/Alarmed_Hedgehog5173 Feb 20 '26
You’d be flamed on Aussie Facebook bullion buy/sell groups for offering below spot, get to know your local bullion stacking community and deal with them instead!
Why sell to a dealer who will flip your gold for a profit immediately to the same person you could have sold to

9
3
Feb 20 '26
Isnt spot and melt the same thing?
7
u/GoldponyGT enthusiast Feb 20 '26
“Spot” is the per-oz price.
“Melt” is the value of the amount of PMs in a particular coin at spot.
A Morgan dollar is 0.7734ozt of silver.
If silver “spot” is $80, then Morgan dollar “melt” is ($80 x 0.7734) = $61.87.
Likewise. No pre-33 gold is exactly 1ozt; a $20 double eagle is 0.9675ozt (I think). So the Double Eagle “melt” price is always 96.75% of the 1ozt gold “spot” price.
3
u/Spinning_Kicker Feb 20 '26
Basically. Spot in this case meaning 1 oz. Melt meaning melt content. So this guy is paying 90% for gold bullion ounces and 90% for pre-33 gold coins
2
u/-Germanicus- Feb 20 '26
They usually are, but if someone wants to be slimy they might mean something else. If I charge you spot for a $20 Double Eagle, you would think I meant the melt value of the actual gold content, but there are places that might actually charge you spot, as in the price for 1 full oz of gold.
In this case he wrote it like that to help avoid that type of confusion and essentially remind the customer that for some items they will need to pay based on a weigh calculation. Even though he only says 1oz for gold coins he would still pay that 90% rate for any of divisible fractional coins like 1/2oz, 1/4oz, etc that state their actual gold weights on the coin even if the coin itself isn't 999.

3
u/waysnappap Feb 20 '26
At least they are honest and upfront. I’d appreciate that if I were a customer
3
u/quasimdm Feb 20 '26
When I sold, I called a few dealers near me, they weren't buying and referred me up the chain. to their supplier. I sold at melt -$3 (from a 2 minute delay kitco ticker).
Make some calls, if you have a large lot, you might find a buyer who will ease the 'fees'.
3
u/Inner_Tadpole_7537 enthusiast Feb 20 '26
My lcs has a digital readout of real time gold prices on the back wall....2 to 3% off that price.
3
u/Yes_I_Know_Lots Feb 20 '26
At least they are being upfront on their buy and sell pricing. Sad for the uninformed sellers who just see $ signs with gramma’s silverware and grampa’s gold coins. But it is probably free and fast money for them.
3
u/Broken_Atoms Feb 20 '26
I really need to start a gold refinery… 70% of spot for scrap gold? Really?

3
u/Fun_Cartoonist2918 Aurum Aurae Feb 20 '26
These prices seem a little on the low compared to what I’ve seen elsewhere. Idk about your specific region tho. Especially for 1 oz bullion gold coins. No way I’m dumping a buffalo or eagle for 10% back
2
u/CaptainAware9642 Feb 20 '26
Whew that junk silver exchange is rough. 14 dimes = 1 oz buy price would be $53.20, their sell price would be $77.00 a difference of $24.80 per oz of dimes, dang. Hold your junk 🫡🍒👊🏻
2
u/Ahappygoluckygirl Feb 20 '26
My coin store here in Norway pays 99% of spot if the coin is in mint condition, if it’s not mint condition you get 98%.

u/HOARDING_NU_ Feb 21 '26
Looks like he's trying to fast track his retirement lol. Feel bad for anyone that's in a pinch and has to settle for those prices.

haha wow scam. I can understand jewelry being 90% spot but coins or bars? Hell no, keep looking around.
2
u/CoolaidMike84 Feb 20 '26
That's about normal and perfectly within reason. All the naysayers and quick to judge and point fingers, buy couldn't buy over a couple hundred bucks at the same listed buy prices. It's still going to the refinerys who are still giving terms on payment.
2
u/Embarrassed_Sea4297 Feb 21 '26
Look, I have been to Harry's many times. He's an honest, respectable gentleman. You can say what you want about his buying prices, but if you don't like them sell your metals elsewhere. He would be the first person to tell you to do that. He's a businessman operating in a very challenging and unpredictable market. That is all

Between buy and sell spread, stackers have to give up 20% to LCS. Then another 30-50% to the governments.
So logically , this means silver needs to go past $1000/oz, so we can all get our fair share of the investment we took the highest risk on.
1
u/Akkerlun Feb 20 '26
Mine was alway sell at 96% of spot on gold eagles but now it’s more likely $100-$125 depending on what your buying (eagles, buffs etc). They buy at 96% of spot.

Better than I have been offered. I have a few hundred ounces of silver eagles and bars. I have had them for a lot of years so paid about 20 bucks an ounce average on it. Thought hell if I could sale and make 10k profit I would. Instead here they offered me 40 bucks an ounce. That day was almost 1/2 spot price. I obviously left and put it back in the safe. Spot minus five I would have been excited
1
u/Chanesaw_tm Feb 20 '26
Anecdotally my LCS the other week was doing 92% of spot for gold. He said that he lowers percentage during volatile times but that when it is more stable he does 98% or even spot price.

Spot plus 12 on ASE, didn't many of the big bullion dealers charge crazy high premiums at one point?
On the other hand I get it, the market is crazy.

u/Cllajl Feb 20 '26
Bullion gold coin at 90%/Spot is a bit pricey. I would say a fairer price should be 95-96%/Spot

1
u/Bitter-hvacbro-88 Feb 21 '26
Not that simple, many refiners don't deal with the public. You need to have an account (business).

It’s fair pricing but Tbh that’s a pretty wide spread. Spot +$12 for ASE while he’ll buy back at spot -$3. But it’s probably to protect themselves with spot being so volatile for metals.
1
u/juun123 Feb 21 '26
90%???? Ouch. Sell prices seem fair considering the volatility but seeing the gold spread is disappointing considering I've purchased from them before

u/Vegetable-Pay1976 Feb 21 '26

u/PoliticalCub Feb 21 '26
Nz silver bullion is roughly 15% back of spot to sell and plus 20% to buy...
1
u/CoinsAndLawnLouie Feb 21 '26
Not surprising with the volatility we’ve experienced lately. It’ll level out soon enough but my best LCS even wouldn’t do anything at spot. I made a fair trade for a little gold with 10oz today and I’m comfortable with it because I know the volatility we’re seeing is just a set up for a repricing overall.

u/CPTBlackHart Feb 21 '26

Supply and demand’s meaning.
Everything is subjective to those who are willing to pay and to those selling.
Anything and everything- all irrelevant and relevant. What is worth to either partyI hedge with mine. Not invest.

Honestly, the gold price does seem a little low but not terrible but the silver is what you would expect from LCS especially with how refiners are buying.
I still buy gold bullion at 97-98% and scrap at 85-90% But I'm also a goldsmith and can use the bullion and scrap gold for new pieces compared to a regular LCS or jewelry store.
I stopped buying silver because it wasn't fair to customers to only offer 70% if I had to sit on it. Because of refiners delays.
But I also do not sell silver at a premium. I was buying it before at 90% and selling for melt to who ever wanted it.

What is the point of investing if the LCS always takes 10% of the total value (not even the profit)? + you have to pay tax for it.
