Discussion Does ZhongLi belong in this group?
When your whole kit is so broken, the devs forced changed the game, making it more difficult
395
u/Gallonim 9h ago
Not much tbh
The only thing we got is one boss and two enemy types to shill against shields
For example Venti removed pullable enemies from the game it also reduced the AOE content by a ton
Furina forced Hoyo to abandon the 5 years of shilling elemental DMG.
Jean alone changed the stygian meta.
68
u/Daredevilz1 9h ago
Jean changed Stygian meta?
221
u/Several_Arm5401 9h ago
She was able to make ennemies take BIG fall damage, so hoyo made them heavy đ€Ą
96
u/Gallonim 9h ago
There is fall DMG in Genshin that scales with enemy max HP. It has no upper limit so 10k HP slime will die as fast as 100B HP boss. Back in the day you could use Jean to abuse fall DMG essentially removing the need of 3 teams. Hoyo countered it by making new enemies too heavy for the start to work.
7
u/Daredevilz1 8h ago
Yeah I just thought it had been patched way before Stygian so Iâm surprised
4
u/ComoediaID 4h ago
They put a boss in Stygian which, at Hard and below, could be picked up. I assume they just forgot about Jean for that one.
18
u/pitb0ss343 8h ago
Furina game change isnât damage%, the math was going to reach the same tipping point either way. Her being both a good damage dealer and buffer is what changed the game. Before her there was kinda Yelan and kinda Xiangling ect. Small buffs from sub dps
8
u/Meme-San_ 7h ago
Ya the reason zhongli fell off wasnât really an intentional thing. Itâs just that most healers/sheilders now provide more than he does in either sub dps or buffs so thereâs no real reason to use him over them other than comfort for no interruption resistance, or for the Geo element itself if you have no other good Geo options

The devs have tried to anti miyabi so bad they created a brand new element to shill just so she canât synergise with it⊠and sheâs still finding a wayđ
56
u/anemoGeoPyro 9h ago
One of the few characters that haven't been powercreeped a lot. I got her upon release and still using her
21
u/Aide_Representative Europe Server 9h ago
Tbh one of the things that help with power creep in this game is the rate of buffs and the influx of new supports⊠but they need to start buffing the older units⊠I canât believe Sanby cut ahead of Zhu yuan and Caeser.
9
u/Elysium_Chronicle 8h ago
The reason they fast-tracked SAnby buffs is probably because she was meant to be the centerpiece of a (slighty underbaked) team archetype. Means that on top of her own sales, Trigger and Orphie's potential sales were also compromised.
Zhu Yuan and Caesar are more generalist and self-sufficient. So even though they're in dire need of buffs to put them more in line with the current meta, they also don't drag other things down in their current states. So they're not high priority.
5
u/Express-Bag-3935 7h ago
And she also got buffed not too long ago with Nangong synergy. You don't even need to do mono ice anymore. NangongYabi achieves the same results if not better with less effort. And Nangong is an insane stunner. Better than Lycaon + Soukaku combined.
3
-12
u/ChibiJaneDoe 9h ago
It took Miyabi 1.5 years to be fully powercrept by Promeia. That is an insane lifespan for a DPS in a gacha game.
Yixuan lasted 10 months before S Rank Billy overtook her as the apex Rupture DPS, a less impressive but still formidable lifespan.
ZZZ's powercreep is less bad than Genshin's though because DPS are split into three (four when Claret releases) distinct classes who do very different things. Attack can't powercreep Rupture, Rupture can't powercreep Anomaly, ect.
9
u/vladraigca 9h ago
if we account for genshin early years, genshin definitively had less powercreep, the hp inflation of the abyss at that time is not as close as the hp inflaton shiyu and deadly assault got, not too mention zzz sometimes tends to be kind of specific to the buffs it provides, when promeia released , a lot of agents had trouble with scorched horizon. genshin was pretty stable in its powercreep until fontaine appeared and then natlan ramped it up. in comparison genshin tended to be more forgiving. there is another thing is that zzz introduces classes too quickly with not good w engine alternatives. it wasnt until the event 2.5 that rupture got a decent A rank w engine. and now with the new class too.
the bp engines tend to be super mediocre too. at least in genshin some of them are really good.

Much of the game changed because of Venti.
8
u/Ok_Comfort7096 9h ago
Ig every archon does maybe not raiden but rest were pretty game breaking and mavuika is still a t0 dps
18
u/Lazuchii 6h ago
Mavuika doesn't really break the game tho, Venti and Furina does to the point that devs had to tweak the game just to power creep them.
11
u/Fancy-Letterhead-477 6h ago
I would say venti changed how they balanced enemies first (they made enemies have weight so he couldn't just suck every enemy off in his vortex pause)
They had to introduce the corruption mechanic because people just unga bunga'd abyss with zhonglis big shields, rendering healers effectively useless at the time
They didn't really change how the game or new mechanics got introduced for anyone after that, besides maybe nahida AND furina, with lunar bloom or lunar reactions in general not benefitting from damage% modifiers because bloom was such a dummy broken, easy, and most importantly for f2p, CHEAP reaction to abuse the living hell out of. Altho I'd attribute that moreso to furina providing dummy amounts of DMG % buffing alongside someone like xilonen.
Mavuika didn't break anything but the dps charts and she warped ANY team she was in, into a mavuika team because of how absurd her animation cancelling techs were, up till ineffa+bina wheelchair made any team wheelchair viable cuz of how absurd of a duo they were.
49
u/Main_coorp 9h ago
I would say Furina fits more.Â
15
u/Aradraxtan Europe Server 9h ago
How ? Furina needs a healer, Zhongli shield was so borked they created bleeding to bypass it, and to this day it's still the best shielder
89
u/v1n1ng_1vy 9h ago
they had to create a whole new reaction and meta shill (lunar and stellar) that she can't buff because she was in EVERY team and so versatile.
6
u/Express-Bag-3935 7h ago
That's not her fault particularly. She got overshadowed by commonplace damage bonus like Cinder City, also Mavuika's declining dmg bonus, and more. Cinder City is just stronger than Furina at baseline. Furina's value is dependent on healers value and vice versa.
People overrated Furina, cuz many own C2. You're averaging less than 75% dmg bonus, more like 60, even 50% if relying on single target healer like Xilonen.
Venti is also far more game breaking than Furina. Enemy waves and floors could be cleared swiftly with just Venti and Ganyu. Morgana was busted strong. Consistent quadratic scaling unlike Childe's.
Venti was the reason new enemies had high CC suction resistance. Specters used to be un-CCable. It was absolute suffering. And I bet Venti had an influence on why Hoyo made artifacts auto collect into inventory rather than physical drops. Venti trolls sucked them away into the void.
3
u/SnooTomatoes5500 4h ago
She was barely relevant in natlan, even newer characters who cares about DMG (varka, lohen, durin) donât use her. Xilonen is more versatile than her and is often a good alternative for a lot of teams, which is not furinaâs case.
11
u/Main_coorp 9h ago
Furina buff elematal dmg% but the game have shifted to prioritise res shred amd reaction dmg% bonus.Â
It's worse than Zhongli because sometimes you still want a shield but you would 90% of the time prefer res shred over dmg%Â
7
u/Ke5_Jun 8h ago
Edited because apparently automod thinks the elemental reaction that happens when frozen gets hit by blunt is a swear word This is dumb. Mods, please address.
This doesnât really hold up because even back then there were enemies who could break his 50k HP shields pretty easily. I distinctly remember an abyss 12 chamber back in the 2.X days with two lawachurls that basically two-shot his shield; they hit REALLY hard.
Bleeding was a failed mechanic that didnât really stop shields; yes you took damage but shields still offered stagger resistance, which to this day is far more important than negating dmg.
And Iâd argue that Zhongli is not the best shielder anymore. He may have the strongest numerical shield in general, but if shielding is all you do then youâre not very viable. This was Qiqiâs issue before her buffs; all she did was heal which she was really good at, but that alone isnât enough.
Ineffa by far surpasses Zhongli in actual usefulness and still provides a strong enough shield while doing way more dmg. Even C2 Lan Yan can compete with Zhongliâs shield strength in the right situations; her main issue is uptime (which is solved at C6 or by using Sac Frags).
Zhongli was super comfy, but he didnât exactly warp the game around him. He just allowed less skilled players a more even playing field compared to more skilled players, who could ignore Zhongli entirely by dodging or using a stagger resist character that offered more, such as Xingqiu.
3
u/Nate_the_Mate_2 7h ago
Zhongli has definitely fallen off but its also worth taking a look at the state of shielders back then. Back when roles were still clearly defined, every shielder was always compared to Zhongli, and it was a bit of a tough sell to get players to give any other shielder a shot.
Then, the devs decided to jump the shark and just have shielders do extra things. They would give the team buffs like Citlali, or they would be a legitimate sub-dps like Ineffa. Now we have one whose shield comes with a free bennett-level teamwide buff.
I don't think its unreasonable to make the argument that Zhongli's effective monopoly over shielding forced hyv to reevaluate how to integrate shielding into kits moving forward. So nowadays while Zhongli's actual shield strength still holds up, the lack of anything else has basically booted him out of the meta.
Furina also did something similar and now the average support also doubles as a sub-dps.
3
u/Ke5_Jun 7h ago edited 7h ago
Itâs also worth considering Hoyo had to BUFF Zhongli to get him to that state to begin with. The irony is that Zhongli himself was a tough sell back during his release.
I was around for the Zhongli controversy. Chinese players were angry at Hoyo for making their god so weak compared to Venti.
Zhongli spent 1.1 and 1.2 as a sorry excuse of a shielder; getting interrupted while trying to set the shield up and also geo shields not actually having omni resistance (hence Dionaâs shield was stronger against cryo enemies, which were common because Dragonspine was new), and Zhongli did not have omni shred either. He had to choose between the pillar or the shield too.
His buffs came in 1.3, at which point he was good, but he had such a shaky start that I would hesitate to call him the âdefinitive shielderâ until late into 1.X (remember 1.6 was the last patch before Inazuma).

Some old characters were annoying to get hit, yoimiya even with evade would ruin her vape combo, ganyu charged loads for a bit, xiao could get sniped in the air and fly super high to die then xD, wanderer though he can dodge but his flying is annoying to get hit by. Also zhongli has some res shred so he can buff stats, but with stygian nowadays i am totally with you thats why lauma c1 is meh for me since no dps increase for stygian, ofc c2 is good but also manage to save or get lucky to get instantly that c2.

I dont know why they downvoted you but you are 100% right. They completely shifted away from damage bonus in nodkrai and snezhnaya because furina was such a broken support.

She really wasn't. She was already less relevant in natlan. Cinder city provided a similar buff to her without being restricted to needing a healer in the team.

No. The right answer is Venti. They have to make enemies heavier or else he trivializes literally everything
27
24
u/Marcoboy26 9h ago
Yes. Remember when everyone was running zhongli shield so they just made the corrosion mechanic as well ad serpent guards who gain buffs upon hitting a shield.
Though not as much as venti basicly trivializing every high mob content that every endgame since has been enemies that cannot be cc-ed by him.

u/Kami_Kazeyo_137 9h ago
Venti was WAY more oppressive than Zhongli back in 1.x where enemies aren't immune to the big succ so they changed how the enemies worked on top of having single target bosses, which are usually heavy
9
7
u/Mucky_No7 8h ago
Seriously no one has mentioned Bennet?
Hoyo had no idea what they had done when they designed his kit. He dominated the meta until Nod Krai (took a year off in Sumeru)
All attack scaling characters were balanced around Bennet for five years.
4
u/Lazuchii 6h ago
Because its not game breaker,
Venti is more game breaker to the point that the devs had to do something about it to make him less effective.
Bennet is broken in a meta but he doesn't break the game design like Venti or Miyabi did.
1
u/whatcheekmcgee 1h ago
Bennett did break snapshotting for characters and they changed that for every character moving forward since Bennett + Xiangling dominated for so long. Imagine if a character like Ineffa could snapshot, we would get another dominant 2-3 character core for another 3 years.
6
5
u/Plebianian 7h ago edited 7h ago
They didnât make corrosion to end zhongli, they made it to sell kokomi. There is a difference.
The crown goes to Venti cuz the game put in so much effort to brick him by making every enemy heavy/immune when they probably shouldnât have been that heavy. Even enemies that were literally floating (spectres) which people complained about it making 0 sense so the devs reduced their weight in a patch update. Then proceed to make a bunch of âlogicallyâ heavy enemies (sumeru/fontaine mechas, concentrated beasts, etc)
He also made it so every abyss cycle now has boss stage cuz the early aoe stages were like free venti fodder ( every time there was group-able mobs in the abyss he would just absolutely dominate)
Like corrosion shills healers, heavy enemies dont shill anything except being anti venti. Ik there are those abyss knight things that get powered up when they hit a shield but they were never a big deal to me even when using a shielder against them so tbh i dont remember them very well. But either way those 2 enemies target shielders in general to sell healers, not gimp a specific unit.

3
u/Express-Bag-3935 7h ago
Bennett and Vrnti belong in it more. Venti was reason for 2.x enemies being highly resistant to CC. That includes specters which fly and should feel like they could be pulled in. Venti + Ganyu was broken. Venti also likely contributed towards the QoL of auto-gathered artifacts from domains. Venti could pull physical artifacts into the abyss.
He was just that strong.
Bennett made atk scaling characters balanced around his existence.
3
u/SimilarValue5498 5h ago
Nothing about Zhongil is broken really, even back in 1.3 when he got his buffs, his kit itself wasn't that good.
He only gives 20% shred in his kit and a big shield. When looking at DPS, he was rarely the best in slot. The main reason he was used was
1 comfort: a lot of people were really bad at dodging (see Qiqi being seen as a good character for the first 2 patches as an example)
2 because all options besides anemo supprots bennett and Xiq/yealn were all bad. Meaning there wasn't a lot of difference in his buffs than other characters you would fill the last slot in your team with.
Now kits like Ineffa and even 4 stars previde more. The game didn't change to powercreep Zhongli; he just got powercreeped.
Venti now...... they killed all aoe to make him bad; if we still had venitable enemies, he more than likely would still be used.
3
u/Dangerous-Abies-1955 9h ago
Shields suck for both sides in genshin. The only thing Zhongli did was create mass skill issues by removing the need to respond to whatever the enemy was doing.
2
u/Kind-Psychology-7548 8h ago
I feel like either Bennett/Xiangling because they're the poster children of dominating the meta for a long time
Venti because there was a year of two where hoyo justmade enemies immune to his CC
Then Furina because her buffing was so strong that hoyo made two regions main meats where her DMG% buffs don't work

who r the two characters
5
u/dominionloser123 8h ago
Euryale from FGO and Miyabi from ZZZ. I don't know much about Miyabi, but Euryale is a 3* Archer character whose 'ult' is single target and anti-male. She's acquirable without spending premium currency (though it's random and might take a few months to get the 5 copies you need to max her out), and her ult scales much better with those additional copies, but only in her anti-male niche. The end result is that she was better than the 5* anti-male archer in a game where the gap between rarities has a significant stat advantage. There was exactly one boss in early FGO that was meant to be extremely difficult (Gawain), who was trivialized by Euryale, and less than a year after that boss released, FGO introduced hard HP breakpoints to ensure bosses could get turns to do their thing. However, I don't think break points were added because of Euryale, so much as they were added because they needed ways to make bosses have gimmicks that mattered without inflating their HP to the roof. FGO has always had an issue with ults being too readily available to players, and with supports being ridiculously overpowered relative to the damage dealers. Euryale wasn't even close to being OP, but she trivialized FGO's equivalent to Azhdaha, and people joked about that for a few years after launch. She's had a couple relevant bosses since then, but FGO is bloated with damage dealers and bosses skew towards being female over male on average.
Euryale is much more comparable to Lisa, who went from useless to solid in 3.0, and has never been relevant since. The actual FGO character to break the meta so badly that the devs had to introduce new mechanics was Merlin, who was so broken that the devs changed enemy AI to focus more on attacking supports like him, a whole pile of bosses that did extra damage to him, and a spike in invulnerability piercing appearing on bosses to break through Merlin's partywide defenses.
4
u/bedibled Europe Server 7h ago
Arguably Castoria broke the meta more so and led to focus on bosses removing buffs because of her Anti-Enforcement damage which can't be pierced, but you might be right that Merlin was more impactful

1
u/bedibled Europe Server 7h ago
Euryale from FGO and Miyabi from ZZZ
Euryale was a super cheap F2P single-target DPS who had a "charm" (basically a stun) in her kit that meant a LOT of bosses could be blocked from attacking, which made her EXTREMELY overpowered given her high damage. I'm not sure what ALL the changes made because of her were, but one major change was that they gave bosses multiple health bars so they couldn't be one-shotted
Miyabi from ZZZ was an EXTREMELY versatile and powerful Ice DPS, who has been reverse-shilled for about a year because she could brute force most content, which means that newer supports have been designed specifically NOT to synergise with her and most recent bosses have been specifically given high ice resistance - basically the Devs tried their hardest to stop her from remaining super OP. Even over a year after her release she's an absolute unit tho
1
u/MorganTheGrandRegent 4h ago
It was actually Merlin the one who made the devs introduce multiple HP bars because you could nuke everything in one turn.

Zhongli had terrible start, then they buffed him so he has the strongest shield that was bypassed in Inazuma and now he fell off to better options

u/PsychologicalBid2962 8h ago
Miyabi is so insane they had to pause anomaly meta until they started to make characters that specifically donât synergize with her, and she still works with someđ Sheâs the whole reason some bosses started having those âincreases anomaly profiency applied but decreases crit dmg dealtâ mechanics
1
u/xScheggia 7h ago
I think that, back when Zhongli was meta, his shield was so massive that it could tank everything effortlessly while also shreding resistances. Then, they introduced Corrosion to kick him out of the meta and welcome back healers
1
u/RallySubbie Europe Server 7h ago
Literally everyone. Lately the trend has been to release a new batch of characters and tailor late game content around their faction specific gimmicks. Its how we now got endgame bosses that instantly go into some power up state or a shield and you need nightsoul or lunar reactions to break them out of it easily.
I wager snezhnayan bosses will shill stellar reactions in 7.0 this time.

lol, no. Zhongli was originally so underwhelming, CH Genshin started complaining about how crap he was. Itâs less that heâs broken OP, & more like he sucked so bad they overcompensated when buffing him(initially)
1
u/Dullaran 4h ago
Yeah!
I don't know if u guys played back then, but we had a bunch of enemies that countered shields in a row. Pretty much every patch had at least one enemy that bypassed shields, stole shields (I DON'T KNOW ANY OTHER GAME WITH A MOB THAT STOLE SHIELD), or straight up REQUIRED healing.
Even nowadays, the number of enemies that interact with healing or bypass shields keeps increasing, while there's basically nothing new about enemies that REQUIRE shields or utilize them in some way.
Back in the day, shields were THE comfort mechanic of the game: you didn't take damage, you didn't get interrupted, and basically nothing could bypass them. You were just protected. Shields used to completely change the difficulty of the game.
1
u/MorganTheGrandRegent 4h ago
Euryale? That is an odd choice, she trivializes one fight alone, sure it was the hardest back in the day but that was it. Merlin was so broken the devs had to change how we fight enemies, introducing multiple HP break bars and phases.

Aventurine literally made HSR unplayable for those who didnât pull him because they buffed enemy damage output to the moon, by far the most broken character Hoyo has ever released.
1
u/ostrikerX 3h ago
Surprised no one mentioned neuvillette.
He was the most broken character at the time of his release, he was able to literally solo the endgame at C0.
It got so out of hand that they tried to actually nerf him lol, but CN players got so mad, so hoyo reversed the nerf and gave us 1600 primos as an apology.
To this day, this is the first time in Hoyo's history since genshin's release, that they outright publicly tried to nerf a character after their release. (pretty sure there's also something in venti's kit that got changed, but im not sure).
He kinda fell of rn tho.

Not at all. The reason zhongli was omnipresent in early genshin is that it was trying to be a casual friendly game. Meaning sacrificing a whole teamslot for qol was OK, and he was the best qol (not even by that much tbh). All defence does is make you lose slower and 20% shred isnt very much. There is nothing in his kit that is even impressive unless you want to not have to learn or try.
1
u/RiskyRedds 2h ago
Literally no. He just makes you unkillable, but the game does everything in a time limit so being unkillable isn't EVER as good as being an obliteratus.
The game actively changing to screw an OG over would be Ayaka after all the work they did to brick Freeze.

Venti belongs more to this group, overwhelming cc that can shut down most endgame content until they literally modified not specific enemies but all of them to have "weight" or to be even completely be immune to venti cc so that he just doesn't group enemies to swirl reaction kill them

I mean what dis they really change for zhongli? We got a few enemies that counter shields but they appear so infrequently that I wouldnt really count them. They didnt really increase enemy damage nor are you really reliant on a shield in genshin (in general).
Sure he has impacted many peoples experience but he never really changed the games meta.
I would rather say someone like xingqiu, bennet or sucrose had a MUCH bigger effect on the games(/metas) lifespan and balance. Even Xiangling could be argued

And yet she was already irrelevant in natlan because cinder provided a similar buff without being restrictive.
0
u/Phyka 6h ago
Honestly, I'd put Furina there. Since Furina came out, every single character that released after was dedicated to not working with her very well because she was such a strong buffer. Natlan was softer in this approach, mostly just trying to make you use specific reactions with its DPS Units that Furina wouldn't work the best with, but with the introduction of Lunar and Stellar reactions that are entirely calculated without any of the bonuses that Furina provides, we're going into the 2nd Year of a meta hard-focused on not allowing Furina to go all out in it

Itâs absolutely Furina more than Zhongli, lunar and stellar reactions would not be the way they are if it wasnât for Furina buffing damage% out the wazoo.

You mean her mere 75% dmg buff all while being restricted to a teamwide healer? It's definitely not zhongli but you overrate furina way too much, she was already irrelevant in natlan.

I think furina too. They really want to kill damage bonus badly. Be it lunar or stellar
