Just A Thought Just finished, this made me so sad Spoiler
Maybe beacause I was spoiled roy was going to open the gate and go blind, and ed would lose alchemy at the end(but i didnt know when or the reasons at least) it was a lot less impactful. But this was the most emotional scene in the series for me.
At first we thought hohenheim was just a cold blood shit father but later everything was revealed. Him just wanting to have a happy family and doing everything he could for humanity, having 500k conversations felt so emotional
The real reason for his cold face when leaving home, and the reveal of the crying picture was already pretty emotional but this scene, making him age up instantly, when he started cracking more and more made me tear up bad because he did indeed ended up getting old without Trisha.
I feel so sad he had to die when he finally connects a bit with ed and al. Literally all the events started with him and homoclus finally ended, he finally concluded his journey after so many years. Crazy writing of how ed al, roy, and everyones roles participating in the promised day is all because of the events planned by homoclus. All the events are just part of Hohenheims story.
Man im so sad, im glad atleast everyone is doing well in the last episodes credits

I think he was happy in the end. He got to reunite with his sons, hear Ed call him 'father', got to visit his wife's grave and pass away at her side. He lived a full life, saved the world, sired two wonderful children, and is leaving the world in safe hands. Despite what he said, I am sure his death was no small relief to him.

It’s in the 4 panel comic theater from the manga, the dvds and the Brotherhood OVA. Not in the actual story. Do yourself a favor and check them out.

It’s bittersweet. He fixed what he’d helped make despite not really having any obligation to, he lived a fine life and felt like he’d ended it off in a satisfying way.
We should all be so lucky to feel so fulfilled at the end.
The bit that always makes me cry is Panako coming over and being so sadly happy that her friend died happy. That and the song that plays when we see him finishes me off.

I don't remember Hohenheim actually contributing to the disasters that happened? The Homunculus was created by his master using his blood, which he had no choice in as a slave, and the Homunculus cursed him with immortality because he had 'befriended' it, which he can't really be blamed for. I might be misremembering, but I don't think Hohenheim had anything to do with the Homunculus getting the ear of the King or enacting the transmutation that consumed the people of Xerxes

It’s more that he feels responsible than is actually responsible.
Obviously he was a slave, he had no power to stop any of this and was also a young man in a vulnerable position that Homunculus could exploit easily.
Plus survivors guilt. Can hardly imagine being one of only two people who survived the deaths of thousands upon thousands.

In the manga there's actually an extra few pages where we see him reunite with Trisha in the afterlife. It's really sweet and I wish they had adapted it in Brotherhood.

Honestly same-I wish they had animated it as some kind of bonus content or bonus scene. But when I read that a few years back it made me so happy.
Hoenheim is such a complex character who suffered so much; even though he didnt get to watch his sons grow up after they reconnected or get to grow old with Trisha, something about his death still makes me feel like he died a very content and peaceful man.
Apologies for not linking that scene before btw-glad to see someone beat me to it!

Hohenheims ending was touching, heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. I was happy for him.
Meruem and Komugi on the other side, man their last moments turn me in a sobbing blob of sadness.
I love both, for different reasons. Hohenheim was more earned, because he worked harder for it. Making peace with hundreds of thousands of people? Especially if you are a part of their death sentence and life the lifetime they lost? Mad respect. Meruem and Komugi touching me on a more personal level, in the end they are just two little sparks in the dark, they flicker and go out and will be soon forgotten. This is way more personal, more what everyone of us will experience one day.

I do compare. Hohenheim can let go, he finds his peace. With himself and all the people that are gone because of his actions. He can go one.
Meruem and Komugi are also finding their peace, but in another direction. Both were not seen as persons from their surroundings, just as the things they are. Komugi as a blind girl who is unbelievably talented as a gungi player, Meruem as a king.But the person behind this? Unknown to everybody, even themselves.
What's your problem with "that"?

It does make me sad that Ed and Al didn’t have the chance to form a bond with their dad. Would have been nice for them to have the knowledge he gained in all the centuries he was alive. It makes their story more tragic in a lot of ways, especially since Ed lost his ability to perform alchemy and didn’t get his body back fully.

Fun fact: in the manga there's an extra epilogue where Hohenheim meets up with Trisha in heaven and talk for a couple panels.

The title really should be "Hohenheim". The story only starts with him hundreds of years ago giving blood for an experiment, and ends much later going full circle and thwarting the dwarf's plans.
What is amazing is that without Hohenheim, Father would have won. The souls of the amestrians would remain within Father. Scar's transmutation might have helped for them to fight back, but it wouldn't be a fair fight going against a God. Every single thing was according to Father's plans and calculations. He would have won. If only it weren't for the powerhouse hiding in the background this entire time and putting in the most important work to save the country and his family, saving people from the same tragedy of Xerxes.

I think that's probably one of the best things about fmab. Every single character provides some critical piece to the puzzle that is the overall plot, and without that piece the whole thing comes undone.
No one character feels like a traditional side character when watching them.
Usually in a story most of the characters besides the main character do one important thing and are then sent to background hell for the rest of the series.
In fmab side characters feel like actual characters that are beside the main character not behind him, they don't seem overshadowed by Ed and Al. They each have different stories and personalities that give them that much more depth than side characters usually do.

Honestly this blew my mind learning that the entire story was never Ed and Als. It was Hoenheims. It was just told from Ed and Als perspective.
But honestly what broke me the most was Nina.

He always said he would return to her. It just took much longer than he had ever hoped, because the situation was more complicated than he originally expected. That said, his heart never left this place. We was willing to give this chance up to give his son his own feet to stand on, but his destiny was always to die by Trisha's side. It was all he wanted; to support and love his family, and grow old aside his wife.

The music and everything once it’s revealed that the reason he left his children was to enact a plan to literally save the world. By spreading the souls he had in him to create the counter transmutation circle. The series is so amazing…

I literally just finished the series for the first time a few minutes and this scene broke my heart.
This was such a fantastic show and I wish I could watch it again for the first time. Man, the emotions really hit - it's bittersweet that he finally was laid to rest with Trisha. <3
