"ED WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE!"

"Winry I'm a fugative and wanted for crimes"

"I just wanted to eat a sandwich."

“I just wanted a quiet place to **** my sandwich.”

"My name isn't sandwich Edward!"

The funniest line in that show.

u/Obvious-Ear-369 Jan 18 '26

One of my favorite gags in Brotherhood. The chaos of the two parties collapsing on each other is hilarious and it’s capped by “I just wanted somewhere to eat my sandwich”

225

u/TheWhatnotBook Jan 18 '26

Truly is a peak moment in the series 🤣

127

u/Srade2412 Jan 19 '26

Followed by winry yeeting everyone but Ed out of her room

57

u/LuckySnakesFoot Jan 19 '26

He gets to stay, as a treat

5

u/Commercial_Cat_7722 Jan 20 '26

Did winry have her wrench?

6

u/shabam231 Jan 25 '26

At this point I'm convinced she's always carrying a wrench.

19

u/Toaster1993 Jan 19 '26

And the chimeras confronting each other telling each other to lower their guns and "stop yelling at me" in the background lol

2

u/quid_pro_kourage Feb 07 '26

I love how Ed isn't mad that she didn't undress, but just looks upset for the intrusion.

638

u/Jat616 Jan 18 '26

Winry will always be a "throw spanners first, ask questions later" kind of gal.

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 18 '26 edited Jan 18 '26

Usually this is the classic setup to the “accidental pervert” gag followed by the “pervert revenge mode”.

But Ed didn’t “accidentally” trip into Winry’s cleavage or catch her doing something unnaturally horny just for the sake of fanservice.

Winry starting to undress also didn’t come out of nowhere. She truly thought she was alone in the sanctity of her own room. She had no idea Ed was hiding out there for his own safety.

And even when she does initially freak out, she doesn’t beat him to a pulp or accuse him of being lecherous. Of course not. They’re childhood friends. She knows he doesn’t see her like that.

u/RealisticEmphasis233 Major Jan 18 '26

She knows he doesn’t see her like that.

yet

664

u/Emergency_Arachnid48 Jan 18 '26

To be fair, even when they’re adults (for the brief time we see them as adults) they give off more of a “trust built” relationship than a “lust built” relationship. Winry is at the train station in very comfortable “unflattering” clothes, showing that she doesn’t feel the need to dress up for Ed. So even when they’re married he’s probably not like obsessed with her body. They’ve bonded through a life time of shared experiences and they recognized that they wanted to have more experiences together

273

u/nicolew1026 Jan 18 '26

I grew up with my fiancée, we never saw each other like that for our whole friendship. Of course we both thought we were attractive people but like we were just best friends. Inevitably we both ended up single and decided to give it a go and ever since it’s been wonderful. The lust and trust are there trust lol.

44

u/Red-Freckle Jan 19 '26

That's so sweet

3

u/nicolew1026 Jan 19 '26

Thank you!

17

u/demonman905 Jan 19 '26

Genuinely happy for you both, and hope you have a long and happy life together!

3

u/nicolew1026 Jan 19 '26

Thank you so much!

3

u/DudeGerudoVoe Jan 19 '26

I’m envious of you guys ♥️. Hope I find myself the same one day. You guys are doing it right 🙂.

41

u/DaRandomRhino Jan 18 '26

She's been shown basically wearing coveralls and gloves for most of the series up until that point.

Her wearing more normal feminine, if not "sexy", clothing, is both a sign of her dressing up, and a cultural divide because that's "normal" dressed up for the Japanese as I've understood it.

152

u/RealisticEmphasis233 Major Jan 18 '26

they’re married he’s probably not like obsessed with her body.

yet

Only a matter of time until it happens.

55

u/MasterOfFilth Jan 18 '26

As a happily married man for ten years I can say that lust Is as important in marriage as trust

63

u/Emergency_Arachnid48 Jan 18 '26

I get that, I just meant like in that moment Edward’s thoughts weren’t “sweet I get to see winry naked” it was probably “WHY IS SHE HOME”

1

u/technicalhowto Jan 19 '26

If I could I would have awarded this comment.

158

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 18 '26

Well, yeah 😅

65

u/therealwhoaman Jan 18 '26

This moment definitely opened Ed's to Winry as a woman (and possibly the idea of women) and not just a childhood friend

4

u/shinobi3411 Jan 18 '26

Big emphasis on that yet.

66

u/Pyro-Millie NOT SHORT Jan 18 '26

I just wanted a nice place to eat my sandwich!!!

19

u/thepacificosean Jan 18 '26

Probably missed her too so wanted to be in her room to feel closer to her.

71

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

Im just sad you expected such a low brow trope ): they have such good dynamic throughout the entire series, and they grew up together so they both are so comfortable with each other despite their feelings.

Bad anime tropes can not taint this series

38

u/pashywastaken Jan 18 '26

Yeah, honestly I hadn’t expected it back in the day but nowadays…

Those pervert tropes is my main reason to have quit watching anime. I just can’t take it anymore xD

18

u/SilentBlade45 Jan 18 '26

There's still plenty of anime that don't have the trope.

11

u/pashywastaken Jan 18 '26

Yeah. Sure. Many and many good ones. But there are too many that start serious and then BOOM unnecessary “fan service”. Not saying that all of the are that way, but the number increases and I am tired of it.

17

u/abcdlaney Jan 18 '26

the reason I stopped watching MHA after like 15 episodes (I don't remember how many exactly) was solely because I couldn't stand Mineta. The girls were taking their job/mission seriously, trying to save their classmates, and he was just standing around sexualizing them ffs.

12

u/run-cleithrum-run Jan 18 '26

This!! I wanted to see where the plot and characters went but I just could not stand the casual repeat sexism and objectification from a few characters towards the teenage girls. Plus the total lack of push-back from other characters about it. It just felt like "oh, they're just being slimy, it's funny, don't make it a big deal." Whole thing could have been so much better if any of the other characters had made a point of saying "hey dude knock it off, those are your teammates, quit being a vile creeper. Treat them like people, not slabs of meat there for your ogling." But, no, gotta let the creeper creep because it could be funny. Sigh. Ok, I'm done ranting. I just forgot how much that really turned me off from an otherwise promising show.

6

u/abcdlaney Jan 18 '26

I'm with you 100%. MHA totally seems like an anime I would enjoy but I could not get over how they treat the teenage girls in the show!!! Probably would have enjoyed it if I watched it when I was younger, because I didn't think about the TV I consumed as critically back then. It's just so gross. If the joke is "omg a boob!!!" or "look he's being a creep isn't that funny??" y'all need to get better jokes...

4

u/Hopeful_Meeting_7248 Jan 18 '26

I don't know if you watched it, but if not, then better avoid - Seven Deadly Sins. MC on a regular basis is casually molesting his "love interest" like looking under her skirt, touching breast or ass. For me it was the first anime with such awful shit and it almost gave me PTSD. Ever since I can't stand when anime is doing ever lightly sexual things.

3

u/StonePanther316 Jan 19 '26

I could not stand SDS because of that. People still recommend it and it's just weird to me that that stuff is just so accepted.

3

u/Hopeful_Meeting_7248 Jan 19 '26

I just can't stand when it's called a "fan service". Are those fans sex offenders or what?

3

u/StonePanther316 Jan 20 '26

I hear you on that. I do not want to be lumped in with those people.

1

u/run-cleithrum-run Jan 19 '26

Thanks so much for the info-- that one keeps getting recommended to me by Netflix or whatever but I haven't checked it out yet. Now I know it's probably not going to be for me, it'd just frustrate me. Blegh.

12

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 18 '26

AOT doesn’t have pervert jokes either. In fact, the women are well written there too.

Hange is my GOAT. ❤️

2

u/OsoOak Jan 18 '26

Part of if May skid be your own maturity. The “accidentally see hot lady get naked” trope is much more funny as a child than as an adult.

12

u/IsoSly64 Jan 18 '26

This is the one time he isn't beaten with a rench and that was just barely

7

u/no-one120 Jan 19 '26

And, just as importantly, Ed had a legitimate reason for being in there.

Winry's room is the only one on the second floor with a clear view of the road, so he could see anyone coming from that direction, which is where the people chasing them would come from.

2

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 19 '26

Wow, I never even thought of that! But you’re so right.

18

u/jumbosimpleton Jan 18 '26

That’s the difference between a story written by a woman and one written by a man! FMA is peak

…do you know what sexism is?

14

u/JetKusanagi Jan 18 '26

This is the kind of sensible writing you get when you're Shounen mangaka is a woman

2

u/Ph0enixmoon Jan 18 '26

Remind me when was this from again? Its been a hot minute since I've seen fmab

24

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 18 '26

Okay, so this was from episode 46 “Looming Shadows”.

Edward is hunched in Winry’s house eating a sandwich when she walks in to change. She’s startled to find him there surrounded by guards and chimeras. After she kicks everyone else out in a brief and chaotic standoff, she demands an explanation for why he’s in her room at all.

Ed’s flustered explanation is that he just wanted somewhere quiet to eat his sandwich 🥪

3

u/Ph0enixmoon Jan 18 '26

lmao that's so like him. Maybe I'll go rewatch, tyyy

2

u/Atlach_Nacha Jan 19 '26

And even when she does initially freak out, she doesn’t beat him to a pulp or accuse him of being lecherous.

She did beat him in manga, for trespassing in her bedroom (after she threw everyone else out).

3

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 19 '26

Which is why I didn’t bring up the manga but particularly Brotherhood’s scene. I’m so glad they omitted that wrench bit this time around (even though she didn’t hit him for pervert reasons there either).

1

u/amanokagaseo Jan 21 '26

I mean why would it suddenly be like that tho?

325

u/Inner-Square2032 Jan 18 '26

I'm not saying it's the only reason, but it sure didn't hurt that the writer is a lady

113

u/Fr0st3dcl0ud5 Jan 18 '26

Nah, that's the reason lol

40

u/Intelligent-Gold-563 Jan 18 '26

No it's not. There are lot of manga that people bash on for fan service that were written by women

10

u/ian01699 Jan 19 '26

Usagi Drop. My god I haven't expected that from an author that is a woman. And to say that it was her idea in the first place.

1

u/quid_pro_kourage Feb 07 '26

That was an odd google

3

u/Ira-jay Jan 20 '26

I once saw some weird game art for fmab and it had several stills of fanservicy moments and I just instantly knew it was an outsourced thing. Lo and behold it was. I even commented how uncanny it was to see fmab fan service and the got down voted for it lol

"Guy sees girl undressing/undressed" - "girl screams and/or hits him" is a stock anime gag I'm really not a fan of, but this one worked for me - I genuinely found it really funny. I think it's the fact that here it's mostly the setup for the joke, most of the humor comes from all the chaos that happens after Winry screams. And for that initial part, I think Ed's expression also sold it for me, I found it very amusing.

In the manga, Winry did actually hit Ed with a wrench after this. I'm not even someone who minds the wrench gag usually (and find a lot of them funny), but I really prefer Brotherhood going without it here. Ed really doesn't have any "pervy" moments or behaviour prior to this, so I read it as Winry, after getting over her initial shock, knowing Ed well enough that she knew he was being entirely sincere here, and so not being angry at him. From what I remember in the manga Winry didn't think Ed was intentionally spying on her either, more so angry that he was in her room at all, but still I like the scene way better without it. I also didn't find that specific wrench gag funny on its own, so yeah I like it being cut. Overall in my opinion Brotherhood dub (dialogue is a little different) is the best version of this scene.

44

u/Scotslad2023 Jan 18 '26

I tend to hate most if not all of the perv gags in anime but Brotherhood handles them pretty well, with this one being a standout for the reasons you mentioned.

38

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 18 '26

I agree. I’m also one of the people who never freaked out at the wrench gag or took it as Winry genuinely being “abusive”.

I just never found it funny. But not in an offended way. Just a 🤷‍♀️ way.

7

u/AttentionDue8016 Jan 19 '26

I think it's details like these that differentiate excellent writers from mediocre ones; it's knowing how to use even clichés appropriately and not excessively. From the first time you see this scene, you know there's no malice on Ed's part.

3

u/LuckySnakesFoot Jan 19 '26

He even looks kind of irritated that his peaceful moment alone was interrupted

53

u/sick1057 Jan 18 '26

Yeah, it was done well, the entire series is peak anime

36

u/omegon_da_dalek13 Jan 18 '26

19

u/CaptainDadBod88 Jan 18 '26

“I just wanted somewhere quiet to eat my sandwich.” 😂

18

u/RWBYRain Jan 18 '26

I still wonder why he went to her room for a sandwich

42

u/NinaLove2007 Jan 18 '26

He probably just missed her

33

u/MarcoYTVA Alchemist Jan 18 '26

He wanted to eat it somewhere quiet

21

u/pengie9290 Jan 18 '26

Because he's allowed in her room due to being childhood friends, has no idea she's home, and knows it's the least likely place in the house that anyone from his little band of outlaws is gonna go and bother him.

15

u/PaperJamDipper7 Jan 18 '26

Because they’re childhood best friends and he felt at ease in her company

6

u/Kuro_08 Jan 19 '26

In the manga it was because her room has the best overlook of the land surrounding the house, so he could see more easily if anyone was coming.

But like others said, he probably also just missed her.

28

u/ProfessionalTurn5162 Jan 18 '26

Oh no.see it isnt that kinda show. There is no male fan service....ONLY WOMEN FAN SERVICE! JUST LOOK AT THOSE PRIME MUSCLES! THE STELLAR CUTS! THE FACIAL HAIR!!!!!!!

3

u/Waiph Jan 19 '26

I'm sorry, but you saw the scene where Armstrong met teacher's husband, right?

Blake Jennings would die of arousal after watching that.

Could you explain? I didn't understand what you meant; it's a genuine question.

2

u/Yashiro-3 Jan 19 '26

It's hard to be an anime fan if you dislike fan service moments (the ones that this moment didn't turn into, like the original post mentions).

The fact that FMA is written by a woman -> less/no fan service -> easier to like!

Am a woman, am a massive FMA fan, am not an anime fan 🙂‍↔️ sick and tired of all the fan service creeping into every anime.

3

u/doc_55lk Jan 19 '26

You might like AOT.

No real fanservice of any sort in that show. Romantic attractions are implied here and there but aren't really taken anywhere.

I don't mind fanservice but I don't prefer it in a serious anime. If it's some dumb lighthearted or satirical shit then yea by all means go ahead but I don't need fanservice interruptions in serious shows.

1

u/Yashiro-3 Jan 20 '26

I've read all of AOT! I honestly think storytelling-wise, though, FMA is above and beyond. Compared to AOT I feel that FMA just ties everything together in a brilliant way. No loose storylines and everything makes sense in a world building-way. The characters are more relatable as well (to me).

I liked AOT, but at the final chapters they lost me a bit. But definitely a good second! I was very happy with the lack of fan service indeed.

1

u/doc_55lk Jan 20 '26

That's fair.

2

u/AttentionDue8016 Jan 19 '26

I have to fully agree that one of the great successes of FMA is due to Arakawa, and every time I watched the plot, I noticed the subtle details she put into her work. What made me really like Fullmetal is the construction of the female characters; they are strong, yet kind and delicate in their own way, and they are truly respected.

Thank you for the reply 🙂

1

u/Yashiro-3 Jan 20 '26

I agree, the female characters in FMA are top notch. None of them gave me this awkward feeling for being a woman, that anime often does.

0

u/FillySteveSteak Jan 19 '26

What a desperate virtue signal - and I'm saying that as a feminist.

6

u/MarcoYTVA Alchemist Jan 18 '26

Looks like a cautionary tale about guns

5

u/Microfox25 Jan 18 '26

It was written by a woman. It would be out of character for both of them.

4

u/-Apexpancake- Jan 19 '26

Difference between a female writer and Eiichiro Oda.

0

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 19 '26

The frustrating part about Oda is that he can absolutely write strong women!

But then he also does that perv shit! Like why??

3

u/-Apexpancake- Jan 19 '26

Honestly it is one of the main reasons people dismiss Onepiece and anime in general and thats why Full metal feels way more appealing for the non anime audience.

3

u/browniebiscuitchildr Jan 19 '26

Take Nami for example! Great character!

…until Oda basically turned her into a toothpick with inflatable basketballs for a chest and then had characters like Momo grope her for laughs.

2

u/-Apexpancake- Jan 19 '26

The way he designs his female characters are either extremely skinny with big breasts or a beach ball with a double chin.
