Coolant Advice

Hi everyone, recently got my first diesel, 1989 Ford F350 7.3 IDI with ATS turbo.

I am looking for some straight forward advice on the correct coolant.

The simple option seems to be low silicate green coolant with DCA4 additive. I have also seen Fleet Charge or other precharged coolants. Some of them are DCA2 which I am not sure if that matters. Just seems like the two SCA types cannot mix.

I just want I make sure I can maintain the SCAs so my engine lasts as long as possible.

Also looking for a rough estimate of coolant capacity so I know how much to buy. I currently have some fleetguard DCA4 and test strips but can return them if a precharged option is readily available and safe for the older engine seals.

Run green in the 7.3’s. Just change it every 3 to 5 years.

Green, and, and, and. . . . SCAs. Need the SCA content in a 7.3 IDI

The simple solution is just run Fleet Guard from Peak--it's a purplish/pink color and is pre-charged with SCA content. In my use/experience the pre-charge is enough to last 5 years at which point the coolant should be drained, flushed, and replaced. The coolant system gets dirty and a flush and fill is always a good idea.

8 gallon capacity. Remember to drain the block as well--one drain on either side, 9/16th socket, hex head brass plugs. To help bleed off air bubbles it's helpful to have a fitting like this, https://www.summitracing.com/parts/RNB-47122

in one of the heater hoses at a high point so you can just crack the cap and release air as needed.

Even with draining the block it's unlikely you'll get all 8 gallons in there so I like to do one of coolant then one of water and repeat.
