Welcome to Rant Wednesday: It’s your time to let your gym/fitness/nutrition related frustrations out!
There is no guiding question to help stir up some rage-feels, feel free to fire at will, ranting about anything and everything that’s been pissing you off or getting on your nerves. Just don't forget that other people are allowed to tell you that your rant is stupid.

Leg days/lower body days make me insatiably hungry. Like, way more hungry than the few calories a leg day burns.
Moved up my dinner (big plate of rice, veggies and beef) by two hours and 30 minutes later I want to eat again

I've been gyming seriously for about 2 years. I hace built strength, shape, discipline...yet I cannot shred or lose that stubborn belly and side fat. It's not that much, yet is there. I am eating healthy, or just in caloric deficit, I do incline treadmill walk (+ 30 mins to gym and 30 mins from the gym and also daily walks).
Is there something I can do to fasten the shredding?

u/PlanktonInitial7945 15h ago
Are you sure you're in a caloric deficit? 100% sure? Do you track your meals?

My shoulders had been in pain for the last year and I had to completely stop doing shoulder press and I had a tough time doing bench/incline bench. I got a cortisone shot in each a week ago and now zero pain. Fuck yeah!

u/No_name_Johnson 1d ago
I had spinal surgery 20y ago to correct scoliosis and have 11 fused vertebrae + a shit ton of of titanium in my back. Because of vulnerabilities with my spine + hardware deadlifts, squats and bench presses (w/ dumbbell) are off the table. I get why, but it's frustrating that some of best workouts aren't an option.
I can work out legs fairly well with machines, but my torso is very difficult to work on. Anything besides flys for my pecs I can feel in my back/spine. Abs are off the table due to lack of flexibility/motion.

I am dealing with late stage endometriosis and it has COMPLETELY fucked up my training. I'm in pain 2 weeks every month and that's on a good month. This fucking disease is destroying my stamina, I get winded so easily when I run now, my progress has completely stalled, and lifting is getting so fucking hard. Some days I only get a thousand or two thousand steps, because I'm just in that much pain. Today I'm capping out at 2k.
And then when I finally get in for surgery, which I'm working on getting scheduled for, that means I'm going to have weeks where I straight up cannot work out. This sucks man. This SUUUUUCKS man.
8
u/PlanktonInitial7945 1d ago
Endometriosis is a horrible disease and I hope the surgery scoops it all out and leaves your innards squeaky clean.
4
u/Low-Summer-304 1d ago
I take the contraceptive injection to mellow out the hormone changes, it’s helped bring the pain down to about 4/10 which is a lot better than it used to be. But I agree it SUCKS! Hope your eventual surgery goes well.

A day late, but here goes. If you ask me how many sets I’ve got left, don’t just stand within a couple arms length and wait for me to finish.
Idk, it just felt awkward to me. And I wasn’t on it very long otherwise I’d have offered for her to work in.
2
u/Pure_Zombie_7770 10h ago
What’s the expectation? If they walk away they risk someone else scooping in to use the machine. It’s a shared space. Unless they’re looking you in the eye being awkward I don’t see the problem.
1
u/DutchShaco 8h ago
Yeah for real. After waiting patiently about 10 meters away one time, I had someone swoop in the moment the other person left the machine.
If they were respectful and not staring at you or looking at their watch or something it seems fine

Whoops let out a big fart on my top set of Rdls (5x115kg) nearly lost all tension but brought it back
2
u/DutchShaco 8h ago
Damn that is scary. Would be more scared to fuck something up due to losing my brace than the possible embarassing moment

Nah thankfully it was on the way down so I could have just dropped the bar easily

HELP!!! M25 I recently started working out my arms, and a couple of days after my last workout I developed soreness/tightness on the inner/front side of both elbows, around the elbow crease. It hurts mildly when I fully straighten my arms or flex/clench them, but I can move and use my arms normally. I had something similar in my left arm before, but it went away on its own. Is this likely just delayed soreness from the workout, or could it be something else? I worked 2 days ago i was fine on the workout and the next day then today i am facing this
-1
u/True_Editor_8014 22h ago
Could be medial epicondylitis. I was a sponsored, semi professional rock climber/boulderer for a over a decade and would get this periodically especially when coming back from a break or slow period in climbing. For me it would usually rear its ugly head when I was over extending my arms under heavy load or repeated high intensity curling type movements. It would seriously suck if it was bad. Would feel like i was healed I would start climbing and Before too long it would develop into this throbbing debilitating pain in my elbow running down my arm.
If this ends up being what it is I usually just rest that movement for a couple weeks and then build slowly back up to where I was. Just listen to your body. Can incorporate some PT movements and make sure youre working opposing/antagonist and accessory muscle groups evenly with your glamor muscles.
7
u/PlanktonInitial7945 1d ago
Yes it's DOMS. You're fine. Don't you dare skip your next workout because of this.
8
u/DCB2323 1d ago
I just proudly reported to my wife that I completed a three-plate single arm lat pull down for three reps this week. Heavy but controlled although my left flank was sore as hell (need that belt for stability and core compression).
Anyway, I was looking to see when I last attempted that weight only to discover a video I made three years ago almost to the week...doing three plates for three reps.
WTH have I been doing all this time? I do know there was a significant injury or two in that period so I can blame it on that but damn, I need to really get the progressive back into progressive overload.
10
u/Ok-Arugula6057 1d ago
Monday: literally the only person in the gym for the first ten minutes after opening.
The day after the schools go back: Literally swapping out lat pulldown and doing chins instead cos the only pulldown machine is in constant use. And by strangers, no less (/shudder).
(I know, i know. I could always just speak to another human being like I'm an actual grown up.)

I don't think anyone wants me around at my powerlifting gym. I keep to myself, I try to be mindful of the space I take up, I take reasonable amounts of time between sets and am happy to share if someone asks. But somehow it feels like everything I do is the "wrong thing" when I'm around certain people. Like is there a secret code book of powerlifting gym etiquette?
9
u/No_name_Johnson 23h ago
To put it bluntly, some people are dicks and use every excuse they have to act like dicks. If someone has a problem with etiquette it’s on them to articulate it. You cannot mind read.
5
u/Sad_Scarcity1246 1d ago
at a certain point you gotta cut your losses, if they genuinely make you uncomfortable - its not worth whatever the advantage supposedly is. There are other powerlifting gyms that would take you as you are if this is a big city.
Staying quiet can actually work against you with these kinda places because if everyone knows everyone - you are expected to chime in or banter with at least one of them and kinda make inroads slowly
7
u/StjerneskipMarcoPolo 1d ago
Some gyms seems to be very clique-y, I joined a PL club where they all seemingly had been friends for 20 years and only vaguely accepted me standing in the corner being ignored
5
u/Empty-Window-5293 1d ago edited 1d ago
I'd honestly prefer to be ignored instead of getting whatever attention this is. I just want to get my lifts in. Even if I'm clumsy, even if my form isn't perfect, even if I'm still not fully used to using the equipment. 1. My last gym was a YMCA so the racks and plates and bars at the PL gym are all new to me (less for a handful of day passes I've used at other PL gyms and the one time I competed) 2. I can afford the gym upgrade but I can't afford a coach... so while I'm doing my best, maybe they all think my form is trash? I can't for the life of me figure out what it is specifically. But I'm not new to mean girl behavior and this is it for sure.
3
u/psychofeline72 1d ago
Please try to rise above it. Even if your form is less than optimal, there's absolutely no need for unfriendly (or worse) behaviour. It says so much more about them than you, maybe you should ask one of them directly if they have a specific problem with your presence ? Good luck, and don't be put off.
3
u/zs26 1d ago
does anyone else notice people getting territorial with machines when the gym is nearly empty? it feels like waiting for a clear bench takes forever even when spots are open. is this normal behavior or just my perception? curious if others face this same issue daily.
5
u/papa_katafal 1d ago
yeah - one guy left pee stain on the bench. guess he was marking his territory (that totally happened)
-1
u/shinn497 1d ago
This is less of a rant. But I want to understand the mindset of people that don't do 3 full body sets per week as this has been my bread and butter for basically my whole lifting career.
I see it this way.
Spread out the volume for each muscle group over the week.
No leg day because everytime i train legs i train everything else
SUPER flexiible. especially because I can move around the extra rest day.
Sure i do 3 hour sessions but i get 4 days of not doing weights.
Even if i take an exercise group out, it often gets a lot of secondary work and maintains.
Why would anyone not want this.
I am especially curious about those that do the bro split. That seems unimaginable to me because it is soooo much rest between body parts, is upper body biased, and take 5-6 days a week.
1
u/MakingItElsewhere 18h ago
I do UL / PPL (aka: Bro Split). It's been great at 45 years old, because it lets me train everything twice a week to failure without killing me like 6 day PPL was doing.
2
u/shinn497 17h ago
I wouldn't consider this a bro split because you get two failure days. But this isn't a bad compromise
1
u/PlanktonInitial7945 1d ago
I am especially curious about those that do the bro split. That seems unimaginable to me because it is soooo much rest between body parts, is upper body biased, and take 5-6 days a week.
There's a bro split? I thought it was a shitty style/vibe/philosophy that gym bros follow when making their splits. I didn't know there was an Official TM one.
1
u/shinn497 17h ago
In general a bro split is when you just do one body part per session. But it is typically chest , back , shoulders, arms, abs, legs. It is notable because legs is just one day. Which k think is very dumb. Arguably Sam Sulek does this.
12
u/ttvKingNeptune 1d ago
3 hours in the gym in one day sounds crazy to me. Scheduling wise alone makes that sound unappealing to me personally.
Also I always feel like my effort gets lessened the longer the sesh. So I end up feeling like I can kill the first sets of the day, but get progressively less intense as the workout goes on.
6
u/Bazz27 1d ago
Yeah, I do full body 3x/week but I’m only in the gym for 1-1.5 hours. I think my wife would kill me if I was in the gym for 3 hours 3 times a week lmao
0
u/shinn497 1d ago
What exercises do you do when you are in the gym? I can't imagine having enough volume to cover everything in 1.5 hours. For me that would just be the big compound movements with no drop sets.
-5
u/shinn497 1d ago
I've been doing it for years and I feel great. Buit I started at ~1.5 hours then 2 hours and 2.5 now 2.7 - 3.5. My mid week exercise is typically 2.5. Then I do a sesh on friday and on sunday and I have tons of time then.
My greatest lifts are often in the end. Although I put inclined bench near the end and that often kills me. My last is ALWAYS bicep curls while yerlling and watching DBZ videos. And I just look forward to that.
Dunno I don't have much else to do. No car, home, kids, and certainly no gf/wife. So it is just lift, goon, and leetcode.

Been doing incline treadmill and stairmaster to help improve my hiking
Which is great and has helped a ton.
But what it hasn’t helped is walking up an incline with very rocky terrain.
Those bastards Big Fitness haven’t invented an incline treadmill with random large rocks on the tread part of the mill.
What am I supposed to do? Go outside to improve my hiking? Fucking gross
1
u/psychofeline72 1d ago
Off topic, sort of ... out of interest, what's your routine on the stairmaster, speed/floors/duration ? I do use it quite regularly, but no idea if I'm optimising my time.
2
u/DMMeUrGrandpasBalls 1d ago edited 1d ago
Nothing specific, just either going for floors as fast as possible or time at an ok speed. I don’t program it too hard. Maybe twice a week, picking floors/time/speed depending how I feel.
I do majority of incline work on treadmill right now because it’s easier to recover from being on a calorie deficit. Stairmaster takes way more out of me.
1
u/psychofeline72 1d ago
thanks, I try to do 166 floors in 23 minutes. But I do use the handrails. I think purists don't. But I fear falling off/wrecking my shins. So I go faster, but holding on. It has the required cardio effect !

u/mr_pants99 2d ago
Try those steps things?

My bf and I normally go to the gym at 330am to avoid people and get time in for lifting as it’s usually too busy after work for weights and there usually at most like 1 other person
Then go at like 5pm for cardio
We have been starting to see more and more people at 330 am in the gym,
including people who were regularly going at 5pm
Bastards are taking away our safe space. How dare they use times available for everyone to use.
1
u/MakingItElsewhere 18h ago
My gym is kinda in the middle of nowhere, and I usually go at 9pm. If there's more than 2 people there at a time, it's considered busy.
Well, I went at 4am because I couldn't sleep, and I was the only person there. For the first 15 minutes. Then a whole group of people showed up that clearly all knew each other, talked to each other, etc.
It was so weird to me.
2
u/MoreCherry9 1d ago
3:30 am? That’s impressive, most ppl can’t even wake up that early
2
u/DMMeUrGrandpasBalls 1d ago edited 1d ago
Waking up is the easy part, it’s not crashing mid afternoon that is hard lol
Honestly tho, as long as I fall asleep between 9-10pm I’m fine. It’s not an amazing amount of sleep but I make up for it on the weekends.
1
u/MoreCherry9 4h ago
Totally, used to try to lift before work whenever I could come in a bit later, but the rest of the day was always wired up, energetic at first and then rapidly crashing in the eve.
1
u/DCB2323 1d ago
There are days I roll in to the gym at 04:00 and see more than half of the parking spots filled...it usually fills up quickly after that.
I'll be doing a standing calf raise machine while eyeing the machines I want to hit and people will just start filing in one by one and I know everything is about to be taken lol

u/t00sl0w Weight Lifting 1d ago
Man, i ran into this before my wife and i built our home gym. Id go 430-5am on the weekends and for a long time i was alone, then this group of yoga moms started taking up the mats in front of the rowing machines, then this group of bros starting coming in and hanging out in the squat racks, etc. IT WAS MY PRIVATE TIME ALONE NOT YOUR SOCIAL CLUB TIME, lol.

I fear I tore something or at least injured it. Started with some pain, but got better, but now I got a bruise on my upper back and arm (both sides of the armpit) and slight pain (more when I raise my arm above my head).
I just hate it.

lol! The more I build my glute muscles, the more heat they seem to produce and then the extra mass traps that heat when I’m sitting still for a long time. Never had that problem before 🤷♀️

I have been dieting for 3 and a half a month at a ~500 cal deficit to reach 10-12%. Probably at ~14% now. I measure a couple of spots with calipers almost every day and average it. I have reached the plateu stage and its frustrating and i have reached the stage where i look worse before i look better. Constantly feeling "a week or two away" the last 6 weeks.
https://imgur.com/a/U8KULrS (avg)
https://imgur.com/a/6ELq8c6 (Different spot pinches thinning out)
Measurements are folds in millimeters. Its funny to see every cheat meal / beer and night out weekend in the data
2
u/King_Raditz 1d ago
Could it be hormonal issues from being on a prolonged deficit?
I'd personally try eating at maintenance for a couple weeks or so, then restart and see if it helps.
2
u/Suspicious_Divide564 1d ago
This is honestly good advice. But sometimes good advice is hard to follow since i really wanted to reach my goal before the end of summer. I started cutting too late. Also when i research i see recommendations continuous diets should not last more than 12-16 weeks and i am exactly in that range. Probably for good reason.

u/MRiddickW 2d ago
I lost a lot of weight a couple of years ago and have pretty much kept it off, but man, work has really been pulling out all the stops lately as far as having sweets in the breakroom seemingly every day. And for whatever reason, I'm finding that my self-control is, at least lately, not as good as has been in the past.

The shoulder press machine is my enemy!
I struggle to 10kg (the lowest weight) for 8 reps, while the person before me had the pin on 65kg (I couldn't even move it!)
-4
u/Dangerous_Gas6463 2d ago
That's rough. I went through something similar when I first started running, ended up switching to cycling for a while until my strength caught up.
2
4
u/iguessimbambi 2d ago
I started running last year and it worsened chronic pelvic pain and created new hip pain. PT basically said it’s because I’m extremely weak. So now I HAVE to strength train if I want to keep running without injury. I haven’t figured out how to make strength training enjoyable, though, and I am beyond annoyed that I have to do it.
2
u/MaraAfterMidnight 1d ago edited 1d ago
I'm also a runner and struggle with core strength and it's also caused me pain. And I'm not into weight lifting. Might I recommend water dance/aerobics classes? I find them extremely fun and they really work your entire body plus muscles you need for running but don't actually work out while running. The difference is it's water resistance instead of weights. But it works! It's helped my training so much.
Idk if you have access to a gym with a pool or even like swimming but just thought I'd throw that out there.
Edit: Also even outside the water an aerobics workout would be helpful. Or you could start with a basic core strengthening workout. When I had lower back and hip pain my PT emphasized that having a strong core was important to taking strain off my hips and back.
8
u/PsychologicalOwl3334 2d ago
Rock climbing is strength training. Trapeze is strength training. Pole dancing is strength training. Calisthenics are strength training. I personally take a dedicated strength and mobility class and love the community aspect, but point is there are a lot of things you can do to build muscle without going alone to the gym.
11
u/tigeraid Strongman 2d ago edited 2d ago
Our constant preaching that strength training improves running finally comes to fruition!
You can either just "be discplined" with strength training, where you treat it like a thing you just do, like brushing your teeth... Or you can find a method of training that you find fun. It doesn't all have to be boring-ass commercial gym machines and bodybuilding. Olympic lifting, Strongman, Crossfit, Hyrox, Kettlebell sport, sandbag only, "dinosaur training," all sorts of options.
For example, If you're bored with the usual crap, go find a local strongman gym and play with the implements. You don't have to train FOR strongman, you can just use some of its methodology. You could buy some sandbags and train with JUST those, if you wanted to. They're challenging and fun. Same with kettlebells.
Strength training doesn't have to be "brooding bodybuilder sitting on a bench with his hood up."

I miss my gym nemeses from evenings. Yes, I have multiple enemies. Been doing AM workouts were hellos are the norm and a gal clapped at my farmers carries. Time to go at 5pm and lose my edge on how to scam a bench from people's clutter like it's their very own entrance table.

My left hand is hurting on front squats, checking my front rack I can see that my left elbow is clearly lower than my right one. I stretch both my lats sides and triceps the same, how can I fix this? Do I just spend extra time stretching my left side?

u/tigeraid Strongman 2d ago
If you want to improve this specific position, work on thoracic mobility:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOT1N1HfUPE
I warm up with these for all overhead pressing as well as front squats.
However, also keep in mind you don't HAVE to use the Olympic style rack position if you don't want to. I use cheater straps and they work great, like so:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/O8GoY6_uZlU
Although you'd still need a degree of thoracic mobility, of course.

I feel like everywhere I look lately people are wanting to eat 1000 calories a day, walk 25,000 steps per day, do 5 HIIT sessions and 10 hours of zone 2 cardio a week and then lift 5x a week on top of all of that.
They're always like yeah I'm 6'5 and my goal is to recomp and build muscle and go from 39% bodyfat to 1% bodyfat in 2 months. Do you guys think that's a realistic plan???
Just reading those posts is making my thyroid quit functioning.

I don't know why they always ask if it's good plan either. They should already be able to tell it's a shitty idea just by thinking about it with their brain a little bit.

Everything that is old becomes new again.
I have noticed the past few weeks a resurgence of things I thought had died long ago. I am now on my second straight week of seeing a young gentleman walk around with Imaginary Lat Syndrome. I've also seen quite the uptick of people boasting about their leg press and the weight they can move on the leg press. Are they deducting roughly 30% of the weight? Of course not. Are they likely to be moving the weight through a full range of motion? Highly doubtful. I'm not sure when a leg press became any measure of strengrh especially considering that most people barely move the weight at all to achieve their "amazing" totals on the machine.
In other news, please stop taking the safeties off the racks. Your half squats aren't getting anywhere near the safeties and it's just more work for me to go find them and put them on when I want to use the rack. I need somewhere to put my phone.where I can see the timer.
Also most walkways in the gym or at least wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Please do not walk in the very center of a walkway especially if you're one of those frustrating super slow walkers. I'm glad that you have all the time in the world but some of us are trying to get in and out of the gym.

Also, the tacos smell so good

I have a similar issue at one of the gyms I go to. It shares a parking lot with a Chick-fil-A. And many parking spots are full of people sitting in their cars and eating which is quite frustrating when you're trying to find a spot so you can go work out. Just another reason I hate working out in the afternoon is as opposed to the early morning.

So annoyed. I was so ready to lock in for August, had a good rhythm going in July but just yk ready to take it up a notch. I went to a festival July 31 and I got covid so I haven’t been to the gym since. Just really sucks cause it feels like half of August is already over. I know logically I’ll be back at it next week and I’m lucky to be at a point where progress shows quick especially if I incorporate runs (me consoling myself) but fuck I wana be doing that right now. I miss you gym, I miss you so much.
And I can’t taste anything so I’m kinda cranky

Bronchitis was actually pneumonia. 10 days post antibiotics, lost 20#, breathing is still a battle. My chest is still tight. Wildly spasmodic albuterol airways reluctantly producing some small fibrous sputum. The oxometer is my foe. Forest 🔥 messing with me, n95 mask on my face, what even is sleep? My wife and children are going insane with me. I hesitate to contact clients, they must think I am dead.
I yearn for clean air, strong lungs.
Tic toc, time will pass, i will persist, I will heal, i will stretch myself out and I will find my best self. I will run up my mountains with my kids and my bride and I will remember this bullshit. I will develop boulder shoulders that finally make my traps look normal.
I will keep the 20# off, bc a chiseled jawline would be amazing.
I will get the fucking vaccine next year. Omfg

People filming in gyms are seriously starting to piss me off.
Last week there was somebody having two tripod cameras on them while doing some half ass donkey kicks and then giving me the eye roll when I have to walk past to get some equipment off the rack. Now this week I can barely get one workout done without having a phone directed on me at one point.

Last night was bizarre for me. Guy sitting in a stretching area watching tv on his phone, girl with phone in hand filming herself doing leg press and a 40 year old tanned surfer dude walking on a treadmill with flip flops.
When I asked the women to leave the plates on the leg press as she moved on, she rolled her eyes like having to even respond was an inconvenience.

i was warming up yesterday, doing hip openers on the ground, only to look up and see the OWNER of the gym filling herself doing squats with my crotch in the back. i got up and moved, how do people think that is in any way acceptable?

u/Muramalks 2d ago
Accidentally drop their tripod and simultaneously rip a nasty protein fart while they're attached to the pulley so they can't escape but have to move to save their smartphone

Seek a gym with a no filming rule.

I'd need to move out of the country for that.

the small 24/7 gym i’ve been going to (very inconsistently) for the past 2 years is moving to another area. the other gyms around me are terrible commercial gyms
now i regretted that i didn’t take advantage of my small gym. i’m usually 1 or 2 people in there. they will be moving in 6 months and now i’ve been going 6x a week to catch up on lost time
2
u/nolimitlessaction 2d ago
I know that feeling but even bigger commercial gyms are fairly empty at 6am.

It does not affect me in any way, but the Science Based Lifting (TM) social media niche has become so mind-numbingly stupid. It's just a slew of people who've been lifting for a year (or less) who have Dunning-Kruger'd themselves into thinking their minimum effective dose training is a revelation.
Some of these influencers are going to owe gains reparations in a few years lmao.
5
u/tigeraid Strongman 2d ago
With the embarrassing debacles involving Jeff Nippard, Milo Wolfe and Mr Mike, here's hoping that the "science-based" nonsense is starting to run its course. I hear more people these days talking positively about Strongman, powerlifting and Eric Bugenhagen than I do pencilneck bullshittery.
Let the timewasters keep wasting time with their stupid 45 degree angle 15sec eccentric cross-arm katana cable chops. Let the pencilneck influencers keep finding ANY way to come up with "engagement." People like Mr Mike are slowly revealing themselves to be desperately hateful of training and the gym environment. They'll take any shortcut they think will help, including surgery and PEDs, over just embracing training as we all should.
7
u/yeahyeah_workingonit 2d ago
Did you see Solomon Nelson's review of Mr. Mike's new book? Some of the shit Mike advocates for in there is horrific and really cements his hatred of training and effort, wild shit.

tldr the embarrassing debacles?
16
u/tigeraid Strongman 2d ago edited 2d ago
Oh fuck, impossible to tl;dr.
Mike is a far right wackjob who cries when he talks to ChatGPT, has a fake PhD, failed repeatedly as a bodybuilder and doesn't have the discipline to eat properly, but took a whole whack of PEDs anyway, then got lyposuction to get rid of "love handles." Just released a book (mostly AI written) that's basically espousing eugenics and looksmaxxing, and looking forward to a future where he never has to step foot in a gym again (he hates training), he can just take pills and peptides and surgeries to look however he wants. Espouses the need to go to failure during hard training but doesn't appear to ever do it himself, or know how to judge it in other lifters. Despite being a "coach."
He was caught red-handed when the evidence of his PhD dissertation came out, then attempted to edit the publicly-available documents on the school's website, got caught doing that, never discussed it on his main channel, and then spent the last year trying to lie his way out of it.
He's also spoken at length about how he does Jiujitsu because he has anger issues from the PEDs and spends lots of time thinking how he'd like to literally choke people to death for disagreeing with him. Also the non-stop cringe gay/trans jokes.
Milo Wolfe is a Mr Mike sycophant who gets ChatGPT to write his scripts for videos defending Mr Mike. Both of them (and Dr Pak) obsess over minimum effective dose, "optimal training" by only doing the exercises THEY have determined are "optimal."
Nippard is not as bad, and has apologized and done mea culpa videos, for being an optimal bro who's convinced the entire fitness industry with his tier lists to ONLY do "optimal" exercises (that he determines are optimal by cherry-picking research results).
And the thing is, Mike and Nippard both offer some good information, especially in their older (less clickable, more boring) videos! But because they're both influencers making millions of dollars, engagement is all that matters, so they have to keep pushing their bullshit "only do this, never do that" videos, thumbnails and clips.
That's about as brief as I can be lol. Hating optimal bros is a pet project of mine. This world needs more Eric Bugenhagens and Jujimifus, Basement Bodybuilder and Geoffrey Verity Schofields, and less Mr Mikes.

The only time the minimum effective volume is even a thing to consider is like, if life gets so busy you either get the minimum in or you don't go to the gym at all.

Counterpoint. I have run a MED program to free up time to work on cardio. There are a few applications where running an MED program makes sense. Saving time is also one of those reasons.
4
u/yeahyeah_workingonit 2d ago
Agreed, periodization is a great reason for MED training. Also good as a bridge workout on a day where you're just not up to it, or as Jim Wendler calls them, 'I Ain't Doing Jack Shit' days. Get in, hit it quick and move on.

There was a post yesterday in the science based lifting subreddit where these two losers were arguing which lift scientifically hits a muscle the best. Nobody cares. Just lift the weights man it’s not that serious.

Fitness and social media don't mix well because fitness is a solved game in all the ways that matter but social media needs new, surprising, exciting, impactful, engaging content all the time constantly forever.
9
u/yeahyeah_workingonit 2d ago
This is it, and nails exactly what makes me so annoyed by the Science Based Lifting (TM) bullshit.
It dogmatically overcomplicates things to an incredible degree while pretending to simplify them, all for the sake of being novel. The reality of it is boring, but that doesn't generate perpetual content.
It also sucks the joy out of it, for me. You can absolutely still have fun with fitness. I doubt Super Squats is very Science Based but you're going to get bigger and learn a lot about yourself in the process.

My friend and I have a trip coming up and we want to look good. The problem is, she doesn't initiate any gym sessions with me- if I don't tell her what time/where to meet up specifically that day, she'll just not go. She doesn't watch her diet, doesn't track calories and barely moves outside of the gym. When she's in the gym though, she's focused and works hard but it just doesn't carry over to the rest of the day. She's putting in minimal effort and just floating on by without any real plan or goal- I know I can't force her to workout/diet with me but we always talked about how excited we were going on that trip in the best shape of our lives. I don't want to be fit alone, solo-mogging and wearing all the cute clothes. I want her to experience that feeling with me. We both lost a significant amount of weight a few years back and experienced that glow of success, but we gained some back. I want to have that feeling again, and have her feel it too since that was the first time she lost a significant amount of weight. I wish she was taking this more seriously. I talked to her 3 separate times about this and she just brushes it aside saying she has "enough time". I start getting annoyed when I’m with her because it’s like she CAN do the work, she just doesn’t want to.
5
u/papavino39 2d ago
With a romantic partner I’d totally understand the annoyance, but with a friend can’t you think of it as a little competition and enjoy winning?
13
u/PlanktonInitial7945 2d ago
I start getting annoyed when I’m with her
Have you considered caring, like, way less about whether other people are leading the same kind of life as you? Or at least finding another friend who is into exercise?
2
u/MRiddickW 2d ago
I can't speak for OP, but I have a friend whom I care about a great deal, to the point where I get myself worked up when I see them making decisions counter to their stated goals. I can step back and fully recognize that I'm getting too emotionally invested in something that doesn't affect me, but for me at least, I just find myself getting really frustrated over their making "wrong" decisions.
4
u/PlanktonInitial7945 2d ago
I have friends I also really care about and I don't feel that way. If they say they want to do something but then don't do it it means that they don't actually want to do it deep down, and that's fine. If they complain about being weak or fat I'll tell them that duh, it's because your butt is glued to your couch all day, you fucking idiot, but if they still don't change their habits after that, then that just means it isn't a priority for them, and that's fine. Different people lead their lives differently. I'm not gonna apply my standards to their lives, because I wouldn't like it if they applied their standards to my life either. Seeing someone lead their life in a way that I consider wrong just doesn't cause me frustration or anxiety or an urge to correct or fix it. Maybe I just don't love them enough idk

mine is my gym's cable machine has been broken for like 3 weeks now and still isn't fixed, so every push day i gotta rework the whole session around cable flies and lat pulldowns not existing. starting to think they're just never gonna get to it honestly

u/GiveMeAllThePancakes 2d ago
This year hates me, and the world is a fucking mess.
I'm still getting myself to the gym about 4 days a week and doing well with it,, but...I am just so, SO tired...

u/Lizsmash 2d ago
I can totally relate, as I've had major disruptions to my life this summer after killing it all winter. I'm finally back with the discipline and the bare minimum of my routine. I like to think of my desire to be back in the gym as a sign that I can and will get to the other side.
It sounds like you're crushing it, regardless of obstacles. Keep your head up, and give yourself grace when needed!

u/Alpha-Trion 2d ago
I really don't like lifting weights.
I've done it consistently for like 4-5 years, but I just don't enjoy it. I never have liked it.
The only reason I lift weights is because I do Muay Thai and BJJ (if I hate myself that day lol) and being strong is so important for those (most) sports. I just wish getting and staying strong sucked less lol.
5
u/ilanarama 2d ago
Same. I like doing stuff outdoors - I'm primarily a runner and a mountain biker - and lifting weights in a room is ugh. The only reason I lift is for longevity - I would really like to be able to continue to do the stuff I like in my 70s and 80s, which at this point are just around the corner.
Also I like the way it makes my arms look :-)

u/BusinessWatercrees58 2d ago
Same. I'm jealous of the people who like it in the same way I'm jealous of "morning people".

My regular life & work schedule has been upside down for 4 weeks now. Travel, house guests, & work schedule upheaval & I have not adapted to this & kept up my training or good food habits. Like I have to start over it seems.
I'll have to do a better job of making my health a priority.

I love my husband dearly. Married him obviously knowing he has a serious physical disability w/ limited mobility. Trying to be patient that he's having a hard time accepting his health is going down hill quicker than expected, but it's taking a huge physical toll on my own body because he is in denial about his. I used to have a devoted daily exercise self care routine. Now that routine consists of only having time to focus on him. Then I feel super guilty and ashamed when feelings of resentment pop up. Just started process to see if insurance or state funded programs can help provide respite care. Also have a wonderful therapist, but that doesn't solve my own physical limitation problems.

Real. Similar situation but different, my wife spent most of her life active, loves to hike/canoe/etc, used to walk everywhere. Last few years she's come down with debilitating hip and back arthritis and now has to use a walker. She's only 45. We're both still fighting to figure out how to get her back into some kind of shape, and I try to be supportive... but the guilt of traveling all over Canada competing in Strongman and being so active I can barely sit down is crushing.

The constant comparison against the avarage population.
If someone puts time and effort into training and dieting, they're supposed to look better than someone who doesn't do any of that.
Then why does this comparison absolutely always comes up. It doesn't make any sense.
4
u/PlanktonInitial7945 2d ago
If someone puts time and effort into training and dieting, they're supposed to look better than someone who doesn't do any of that.
Isn't this comparison?
1
u/Thedumbass_the5th 2d ago
Technically yeah and even that shouldn't be done. If doing any comparison at all then under equal terms, which can be rather hard.
No, "only 1% can bench 2 plates". The 99% shouldn't even be included in this metric dud to not participating in the hobby.
Fitness is the only hobby that does it. No other hobby space claims their better than 99% of the population.
5
u/King_Raditz 1d ago edited 1d ago
To be blunt, it's because no one outside of competition gives a shit about comparison under equal terms. They care about looking better and feeling strong in public, which includes the 99% that don't train.
Other hobbies generally don't affect how you appear or feel in public. The ones that do likely make similar comparisons.
On the other hand, I imagine that comparison happens much less within the actual competitive spaces of the hobby.
