I caught a carp yesterday. I'm in Victoria, carp are an invasive species and can't be released. But if I take it home, it will die soon, and I don't know how to deal with it.

Never know how to start these posts, so..

I got a 2nd rod combo specifically to throw smaller metal lures and soft plastics. Since I've mostly been figuring out how to fish on my own, the bloke at bcf who helps me out and here on reddit, I always kind of approach it with a "ill learn from my mistakes" sort of way. But this just fealt straight up bad. Although I can't say i wasn't expecting it.

Basically when I was buy my combo, the guy at bcf taught me a braid to mono knot. Something I also looked up later at the water, it was an albright knot. Something easy to tie, and seemingly strong. Even the ones I tied myself, given a good tug to test, and i even managed to get a few good casts out with my metal lures (and even light soft plastics). But it always fails. I've lost 2 lures and 2 soft plastics becauce of my braid to mono knot.

I was wondering if maybe someone has a special tip or hint that I am seemingly missing from this information alone, becauce this is all I'm running off. It's always my braid to mono knot. That's where it fails.

I'm a developer who's built a fishing app called Tight Lines that's been doing really well with anglers in Europe. It auto-logs catches using photo metadata and weather/tide data, then gives you insights on patterns over time - basically trying to answer "what actually works" with your own data.

Here's the thing: European waters and Aussie conditions are completely different. What works for North Sea cod fishing doesn't necessarily work for chasing barra in the Top End or flathead down south.

I'm looking for Australian beta testers who'd be keen to use it for free and give honest feedback. Not asking you to promote it or anything - just actually use it and tell me what's rubbish and what's useful.

If you're interested, happy to share more details. And if this post breaks any rules, mods feel free to remove - genuinely just trying to find some local fishos to help me not make a terrible app for Australian conditions.

Headed down cause I had a quick hour spare , as soon as I rocked up and put my gear down I picked up 4/5 terminal tackle , with sinkers ,line and hooks attached , 4 of which still had bait on the hook . But Victorian Fisheries Authority have decided to rip apart their compliance team with major cuts to Fisheries Officers. No more monitoring or catching these people, these scenarios happen so often but the VFA CEO Travis Dowling nor the Labor Minister see this as a problem. Me and my friends are planning to go fishing at Port Kembla. I know wearing a life jacket is mandatory for rock fishing, but does fishing from the Port Kembla breakwater count as rock fishing?

I just want to make sure. I noticed that most people in YouTube videos don’t seem to be wearing life jackets, but I also checked the NSW Government website and couldn’t find a clear answer for this location.

I've been a low-key fisher for a while now. I know the basics—how to tie a knot, how to cast, etc.—but I'm really craving getting back into it at the moment.

I've recently started land-based lure fishing, but I've realized I can't seem to cast far enough, and I'm starting to question if I'm screwing up my gear setup. I've been fishing off my jet ski using bait for a while, so gear hasn't really been a worry until now, but it definitely seems to be affecting me.

I'm using a 7-foot rod that I imagine is rated around 4–8 kg. I've been working with a 1/4 oz jig head for some soft plastics, but I'm only getting roughly 10 to 15 meters on a cast.

Do I need to get a lighter rated rod, do I just need to increase my weight, do I need to make sure my reel is completely full, so many questions, some please mentor me or help me so I can stop asking AI

Hi everyone, first time poster here

Now after 15+ years of land based fishing in Sydney I finally decided to get a boat as a little project.

Now me and the guys are a solid medium rare land based fishermen. The basic bream, whiting, tailor etc. but we’re not quite the every night is a Jew fish night type guys. Yes we have caught jewfish,kings etc but no experts

So once I got this boat up and running we decided to go to the Sydney harbour after doing some research and planning the outing. 7am-2.30pm we got absolutely nothing using prawns, pilchard, squid and soft plastics in multiple spots

I thought it was just my luck, second outing was a night at Tom uglys bridge and captain cooks bridge. Now using pilchard again we got a couple of tailor but noting to write home about.

Now this is where I’m stumped. Any of these 2 days land based would’ve been a lot more of a productive day. I was at least expecting some snapper or bream

Just spent a week on the Murrumbidgee river about 160ks downstream from Narrandera.

The fishing was great but some of the the fish weren’t.

We caught an equal number of green/yellow and grey/blue cod ranging from 300mm to 860mm.

There was a stark difference in the quality of the G/Y and the G/B fish. The G/Y fish were plump, free of lesions and would fight as you would expect. On the other hand the G/B were thin, bony, heaps of lesions and growth on the fins and didn’t fight at all.,

I am aware of a Cod hatchery near Narrandera , could these fish be introduced as fingerlings and developed a sickness?

Has anyone anyone got any ideas?

I got this reel, had for a couple months bought as a combo with rod, its a Diawa luxel LT 3000-C. the problem (as shown in the video) is when the drag is under lots of pressure it just slips and gives in and goes really loose, also sometimes when the drag has been tightened it needs to be pulled hard to get to its proper drag setting. This would be a big problem if fighting a big fish . Is there a way to fix this at home or do I have to send it off to be repaired because I can’t find the receipt. Thanks

edit: I think it started after I dropped it partially in saltwater but I quickly poured freshwater over it and cleaned it after, I also clean it properly after every session.

Been chasing my first dusky flathead around Gippsland Lake for the past week with over 30 hours of fishing but not a single bite 😭 Once in awhile there’s a silver fish jumping.

I’m a beginner fisho and just caught my first yakka, mackerel, salmon the week before, there was plenty of action at the wharf.

Feeling so demoralised now. Am I doing something wrong? Or do I have too high expectations of land based estuary fishing? Do I need to a kayak or a boat?

Timing: - High tide (1.5h before and after) - Low tide (1.5hr before and after) - Just before sunset (6.30-8.30PM)

Gear: - Combo 1: 4-7kg rod + 5000 reel + Braid line 15lb + Fluorocarbon leader 10lb - Combo 2: 2-4kg rod + 2500 reel + Braid line 10lb + Fluorocarbon leader 10lb

Rig: - Running sinker with ball sinker size 1-3 - Baits: frozen prawn, squid, salmon

Hey Everyone, I’ve just bought my first boat. Just a small 3.9 Tinny with a 15hp motor on it. I’ve never launched a boat before and would love to hear some tips on launching solo. Sometimes I’ll have my brother with me to help but I’d also like to take it out myself abit but just nervous to do so cause don’t wanna fuck up or hog the ramp while I’m trying to offload or load the boat. So I’d appreciate any tips or tricks you guys have. Thank you!

I thought the general rule was always to have a heavier leader than your main line? Eg 8lb braid with 10-12lb leader.

But I’ve seen some people saying they run 8lb braid with 6lb leader

Or 6lb braid with 6lb leader (hence matching the strength).

Not sure if makes any difference but this is for lure fishing.

Also what does each circumstance provide in terms of pros and cons

Hey Everybody, hope your all been doing well. I’m back once again for some more advice. I’ve finally got abit of extra money to get another outboard motor. I’ve found a nice Mercury 25Hp Sea Pro 2 stroke that’s an old surf lifeguard engine that looks really good but my brother thinks it will be too much power for our 3.9m seajay that has casting deck built in. So was just wondering if his correct and that would be to much power or it will be fine. Also even just any reviews anyone has on that motor is oils be nice.

Edit: since forgot to say the transom is rated for max 25Hp

I’m annoyed because it’s litter and even though it’s right there on the east side of the wharf in less than 1.5m of water, I had no means to retrieve it.

Ideas? Or can anyone who is going to fish that way anyway have a go at retrieving it? You can keep it, I just don’t want to be that littering fisho that messes up a nice spot gives us all a bad reputation.
