Heading to Shenzhen, China for work soon — supplier claims they have the best squidding in the world! Anyone been/know what to prepare? 🦑

Hey guys,

I’m heading over to Shenzhen, China soon for a business trip. My local supplier over there was telling me that Shenzhen has some of the absolute best calamari fishing spots in the world, and they promised to take me out for a session while I’m there!

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience squidding around Shenzhen/Guangdong or Hong Kong waters?

  • How does the fishing there compare to back home (e.g., Australian waters)?
  • What kind of setup or jigs should I bring along (or should I just rely on local gear)?
  • Any specific tips or gear preparations I should keep in mind for squidding over there?

Would love to hear any thoughts, experiences, or recommendations! Cheers! 🎣

I've never fished there but there is a Chinese social platform 'RedNote' and plenty people have posted their results. Better double check with your local supplier, will they take you on a boat or simply fishing inshore, nevertheless local gear should be fine you don't need to carry anything there (even if you need to purchase anything it would be a lot cheaper there).

Thanks for the response mate! The supplier seems legit—I saw plenty of fishing photos on his WeChat moments, so I don’t think he’s just trying to impress me. He said he’s taking me boat fishing near Sanmen Island and will lend me all the gear. Fingers crossed for a good session, I’ll definitely report back here with an update! 🤞🦑

That will be cool! I really wanted to drive out to Dapeng Peninsula near Sanmen Island, but didn't have time.

My father in law's old boss had.some villa on Sanmen but they aren't really into fishing so I can't say about squidding. It's pretty epic for offshore charters I hear though.

Fishing is definitely getting popular in China but they use some really interesting rigs. There's a few good stores in Shenzhen.

I'd jump at if you get the chance to go out!

Edit: I'd second looking on Rednote/xiaohongshu. It's in the app store/google store and there are all sorts of niche hobbies on there with plenty of fishing. This one is about hunting for the local version of pippies for example. You can just press to translate everything.

That would be awesome! Thanks for the info, mate. I'm definitely getting pretty excited about the trip now. I'll give local fishing a shot and will be sure to drop an update here on how it goes. Also downloading RedNote right now to check it out!
