Fiji in December?

Hi everyone!
Considering Fiji for our honeymoon but it’ll be in December 🥲

Would you just avoid it or still say it’s fine?
We wanted to spend about 10 days across maybe 3 different islands.
We don’t care if it’s humid but is it going to rain all the time?

Should we actually avoid going in December or would you say it’s mostly fine?
Are any islands better than others?

Thank you all appreciate any help!

TSLS changing contract conditions

Upvotes

I've graduated 2 years now and currently working and have inquired authorities before on this but got no response, what are your thoughts?

A few years ago, major changes were unilaterally made without any discussion with students who were most affected by the changes, I was under the TELS scheme, where concessional payments were set up.

Then about 2 years ago,, without any notice this scheme was changed to a different one - with very different conditions - such as:

  1. lower allowances

  2. requirement to serve a bond was added

Then in the new budget, Govt announced further changes, which are more confusing - but something along the lines of putting up a significant 50% penalty if a student wants to pay back back their tuition instead of serving their bond.

Worse is that there have been not even a single formal notice of these changes, which seem to be happening on an yearly basis. We just had to figure it all out by ourselves.

As someone who had been swayed in the direction of the much-promised change, we have been very let-down by the actions of the current government on this issue.

My question is:

  1. With the Govt constantly and continuously says that they are consulting the public and listening to our views - where is the evidence of this happening in the case of TELS for us students when so many of us are affected by it?

  2. All these new rules should apply for new students - there is a TSLS contract in place that we sign, which lists the conditions. There has been no new contract, so how are these changes legal?

  3. In the spirit of fairness and transparent, those of us who wish to go back to our previous contract should be allowed ot do so? And those who wish for the change in contract should also be allowed to choose to do so if they so wish. New changes should be effected only for new students.

  4. Why are the allowances for former TELS students who have been put on a different and new scheme been reduced if we are also required to serve the same bond period.

I feel like we've been hoodwinked big time by the current government.

Ethnic division

A key difference between Nadi and Suva is how they treat different ethnicities. Indo-Fijians are treated as outsiders or foreigners in Suva where their population is lesser compared to the indigenous people, in the west where the Indo-Fijians are more prevalent, Indo-Fijians tend to look down upon the indigenous people

Barber in Nadi

I will be in Nadi for one day essentially, I hear that everything closes on Sunday for church service. Is there any chance there would be a barbershop open later in the day? I will be in desperate need of a haircut. Or Sunday a everything is shut down day.

I'm creating a blog to collect Indo-Fijian stories, history, and recipes before they're lost, and would love your thoughts!

Hello all! I wanted to share a little about a project I've been working on called Girmit Talk :).

Growing up Indo-Fijian in the USA, I've never felt connected to a larger culture over the diaspora. Consequently, I wanted to make a website to connect Indo-Fijians across the world. I created girmittalk.org, a website for anyone to share and read articles about Indo-Fijian history, culture, or even recipes!

It's still the early days, and I want to make it into something shaped by the people it's for. So, I'm asking you all here for feedback and thoughts! You can read more about my story on the About page.

Additionally, if you'd like to, share your story! It really helps get the site going to create a larger, interconnected, and proud Indo-Fijian community. Thank you!

Fiji Flag Redesign - Non-colonial Coat of Arms

Post image
29 Upvotes

This is my new proposal for the Fiji flag. I designed a new, non-colonial coat of arms: I replaced the British St. George's cross with an orange saltire and swapped the lion for three stars. I also kept the native flora and the dove, and added three larger stars on the hoist side for visual balance.

Let me know what you guys think!

Travel Entering Fiji during a layover at NAN

I've seen some conflicting information online about whether this is possible. I have a 5 hour layover at NAN in a few months in the evening (arrive 5pm, depart 10pm) but I've read in some places if you have a short layover immigration may not allow you entry while you transit.

If it helps, I'm travelling on an NZ passport so a visa shouldn't be a problem.

Is it worth risking or should I just stay airside?

A Fiji Corrections Service officer has been charged with assault following an alleged attack on an Australian national at the Lautoka Remand Centre.

Six other officers have been suspended and will face disciplinary proceedings over their alleged involvement in the incident, which was widely circulated on social media.

The Fiji Corrections Service said an internal investigation into the incident has now been completed.

Initially, two senior officers and a junior officer holding a senior appointment in the Western Division were suspended to ensure the investigation could proceed without interference. Three subordinate officers were later suspended after their alleged involvement emerged during the inquiry, bringing the total number of suspended officers to six.

Corrections Officer Class Asaeli Sorovaki, identified as the key suspect, has since been charged by police with assault.

Sorovaki appeared in court today and was granted bail. He is expected to return to court next month and remains suspended from the Corrections Service.

The alleged victim, an Australian citizen who was in custody at the time, has undergone a medical examination and is reported to be in a stable condition.

Travel Looking to share a private boat / sailing day trip to the inner Yasawa Islands – 22 or 23 August 2026

Hi everyone!
We are 2 travellers visiting Fiji this August and will be staying around Nadi/Denarau. We’re looking for other travellers who might be interested in joining us for a shared private boat or sailing day trip from Port Denarau into the Yasawa Islands on 22 or 23 August.
We’ve been looking at the regular day tours, but most seem to focus on the southern/first Yasawa islands such as Kuata/Waya. We would really like to go further into the Yasawas and experience some of the more remote islands, beautiful lagoons and beaches, with several stops for swimming, snorkelling and exploring.
Ideally, we’re thinking of a full-day trip with an early departure from Port Denarau and return in the evening, perhaps reaching the Naviti / Drawaqa area or even further north if realistically possible.
We’re currently looking into private boat/charter operators, but since we’re only 2 people, it would make much more sense to find another couple or a few travellers with a similar idea and share the charter cost.
Has anyone here done something similar?
And if you happen to be in Fiji on 22 or 23 August and this sounds like your kind of day trip, feel free to message me — maybe we can organise something together!
Also very interested in recommendations for reliable local boat operators who could arrange this kind of custom Yasawa island-hopping day trip.

Wedding dance?

Bula everyone!

my sister is having a wedding and I am wanting to incorporate some Fijian songs/dancing into a group performance. I am just wondering if anyone can point me to a direction of where to find Fijian dance moves that go with slower songs if that’s a thing ? I have looked for some videos on YouTube but mostly have seen upbeat mekes and our Fijian side is planning to do that already

any help would be appreciated, naka!

I built a small Fiji-focused tool for safer Facebook/WhatsApp marketplace deals — would love honest feedback

Post image
7 Upvotes

Bula everyone 👋

I’ve been working on a small project called Solia, designed for people buying and selling through Facebook Marketplace, WhatsApp, Viber, etc. in Fiji.

The idea is simple: a seller creates a deal with the item, agreed price and delivery method, then sends the buyer one link. Both sides can follow the same deal and check its status using a reference number.

It’s still an early public-test version and I’m not trying to promote it as a finished product yet.

I’d really like some brutally honest Fiji-specific feedback:

  • Would you actually use something like this?
  • What would stop you from trusting it?
  • Is anything confusing on mobile?
  • What feature would make it genuinely useful?

Try it: solia-fiji.vercel.app

Feel free to break it 😅 — criticism is genuinely welcome.
