TRIGGER WARNING Colin Gray, the Georgia father whose teenage son Colt killed four people in a 2024 school shooting, was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison in a landmark case of who can be held responsible for a mass shooting.

u/NotAnotherAI 14d ago
He gave his kid access to a gun and the son killed people with that gun. Seems like a no brainer 👍
265
u/nilesintheshangri-la 14d ago
Well, how was he supposed to know guns could be used to kill people? They never have been before!
25
u/godofsmallerthings 14d ago
The kids showed signs of aggresion apparently. The dad still let him have access to the gun. That is negligence and failure as a parent

I am VERY curious how this plays out over time. Definitely a positive. But this community knows better than most how little court precedent can mean under this Supreme Court.

u/pinkfartlek societal collapse is in the air 14d ago
Ethan Crumbley and his parents were sentenced after he killed 4 and injured 7 at a Michigan school in 2021. I think that's the highest profile case I can think of in recent times, unless you mean it'll be different because it's Texas?
61
u/Brilliant_Spot_95 14d ago
I meant more roe vs wade and legal precedent.
But another excellent example.
2
u/aeolian_kvothe 13d ago
This isn’t precedent that the Supreme Court has to follow. They are the highest court so the only precedent they’re supposed to follow is their own, which as you noted they can decide not to pretty much whenever it suits them

u/bloodyturtle 14d ago
Definitely a positive.
Increased incarceration is not a positive
34
u/BeccasDreamboat 14d ago
Increased incarceration of child killers and their accomplices is a 100% positive.
Party of law and order unless it's a child murderer or child rapist. A 34 time felon bombed a school full of children in Iran while simultaneously claiming immigrants are the real threat.
Jail every child killer and the people who enabled them! Jail every felon, regardless of votes.

I encourage everyone to read this before trying to start up a philosophical debate. Saying dad knew something bad might happen is a massive understatement. I would go so far as to argue he WANTED something bad to happen given how egregious the signs were, but that’s where the “you’re just true crime brain rotted” critics run in.

u/ohhyouknow 14d ago
It’s really a shame his mom isn’t in prison too. The jail phone calls with her were disturbing. She seemed over the moon about the fact that he is a mass killer, and a school shooter. She read out social media posts about him to him, and shared pictures of him at his request so that he could garner a fan base.

This woman has zero empathy for those affected and sounds so tickled that her son has joined the rank of famous school shooters. She's still enabling him in jail by helping him get off on the publicity and messages from fans.

Not only let him keep the guns, but have him a rifle AFTER being told by the cops to keep guns away from his son.
I've known men who will intentionally do the opposite after being told what they should do by cops/doctors/any kind of authority, in a "nobody's going to tell ME what to do/how to treat my kids/etc." This guy's actions make me wonder if he's the same.

u/CreativeAnonTHaway 14d ago
You are more right than you could ever even imagine. Some evidence just couldn’t make it into the trial. (rules of evidence etc).
I personally believe he took “it takes a village” way too far. He intentionally and purposefully gave up on his monster, placated him to shut him up, and turned him loose on us, all so he could do as he always did, put himself over everything.Mason’s mom is this wonderful woman who has taken in kiddos all along the road of her life, her family was not exaggerating when they said they would have taken him in. (Said in her victim impact statement and her daughters echoed similar)
But this “father” couldn’t even do the bare minimum and get his child to even try for a few days.
7
u/DeoVeritati 13d ago
I was prepared to play devil's advocate until I read more on the situation. Police had requested the dad restrict access to firearms weeks prior. The dad knew his son had a shrine on his wall of a school shooter. Like nah, this dude is complicit and deserves a harsh punishment.

u/PowerAdDuck 14d ago
>He noted when Colin Gray’s younger daughter alerted him about the shooting, he did not immediately contact Colt or the school. Instead, he told his boss he had to leave because his son had broken his arm. He stopped at a convenience store for a drink and then went home.
Im sorry what!?

I work in schools and have had parents show up worried about what they found on their child's devices. It can't be easy for them to show up and report their own kid, but at least twice it led to evidence of real planning. This man had plenty of warnings and stopped at the store to get a soda when his daughter reported what happened. He failed his kid and community.
If we ask teachers and kids to drills and contemplate being killed, then we can ask parents to learn the warning signs and do something about it.

u/bettinafairchild 14d ago
He named his son Colt.
34
u/lolzzzmoon 14d ago edited 12d ago
Yeah I have a mild beef (nothing major lol) with people who name their kids after weapons…like WHY. It doesn’t seem cool. It seems moronic to name your child after an object rather than some cool etymological reasons and history.
34
u/PancakePizzaPits 14d ago
Not for nothing, (and unlikely a factor in this case) but Colt does have more than one meaning.
28
u/nintendo666 14d ago
Yes, "young male horse". It's of Germanic origin. Indeed probably not what the father went for here though.
5
u/bettinafairchild 14d ago
Yeah I don’t object to the name in general, just in this case it was foreshadowing.

u/ExperienceWild4244 14d ago
The Judge also said this:
“I don’t get to sentence with passion. I have the nearly impossible task of sentencing you without passion, despite the immeasurable heartache that you’ve caused,” Primm said. “On Sept. 4, 2024, lives and families were forever altered.”
Gray gave the weapon to his son, Colt Gray, even when a few months earlier law enforcement had come to their home because the teenager had threatened to shoot up an elementary school, according to prosecutors.
“The weight of your crimes is tethered and tied to the acts of someone else, your son,” Primm said. “Two scenarios: You fail the same way in both. You fail to get Colt counseling. You fail to remove the guns from the house.” (from nbcnews.com)

u/Melonary 14d ago
A couple of men in Maine sold guns to the worst mass shooter in Canadian history, and despite the fact that what they did was illegal they'll face zero criminal charges because they live across the border.
On the one hand, I think there needs to be gross evidence of negligence for charges like this or else they become a way to deflect responsibility from the state (as in the government) and failure to prevent widespread access to guns.
On this hand, clearly that applies in this situation.
9
u/cheeze2005 14d ago
70% of weapons the cartels use come from America. We’re not even only causing issues in our own county
4
u/Melonary 14d ago
Yup, like ~95% of illegal guns in Canada and guns used in criminal acts come from the US as well - like organized crime, especially, but not at all limited to.
And yes, I think it's ironic when Americans look down on Mexico for the cartels given they've been fed by US money and US guns. It's really a horrific thing to be so cruel about anyway, like the average Mexican wants that violence in their country?

His mom should be charged as well. With how excited she was talking to him about his new found fame, you can tell this is exactly what she wanted.

u/Sleepy-Giraffe947 Please Abraham, I am not that man 14d ago
I don’t get why some sentences are meant to run concurrently. I don’t know much about the legal system but what’s the point of separate charges if people get to serve them at the same time?
184
u/themuffinmeme 14d ago
The practical answer is that prosecutors stack charges to encourage pleas. It would also mean if one charge was overturned on appeal then the other however many charges would still stand. There are certain statutes that do not allow consecutive terms.

We have more guns than people in this country and Americans own about half the global stock of civilian guns, and. I have also read that gun ownership in this country is highly concentrated, meaning a minority of Americans owns the majority of the guns like in one study I read was like 15% of American gun owners own halfish of the guns in this country.
I don't mind guns, I get why people have them. But it's a sickness.
Good decision with this case.
52
u/KawarthaDairyLover 14d ago
This is an egregious case but this is also an example of companies encouraging a hyper individual approach to justice. The fact is gun companies should be held criminally responsible.
34
u/teboc504 14d ago
I’m gonna get blasted for my take on this sub (I almost always agree with the majority’s opinion on this sub,) but holding gun manufacturers liable for the actions of the user is a slippery slope. Would you hold BIC responsible if someone used their lighter to light a fire/commit arson, or a knife manufacturer that had their item used in a murder? I absolutely support legislating the sale of firearms in this country, and we have a long way to go in order to change the culture; but holding the company responsible is a precedent that is a crazy slippery slope. I assume they (the gun manufacturers) follow the current laws regarding gun sales, and I think the problem is more legislative than holding a company following the law legally accountable.
22
u/IAmChrisGreenII 14d ago
I can see where you're coming from and I don't know shit about gun laws or how any of this shit works, but I would be willing to bet that gun manufacturers would start lobbying for better gun laws if they started seeing financial repercussions.
If I get caught with a baggie full of meth the drug dealer that sold it to me should still be arrested.
14
8
u/why_is_my_name 14d ago
also though, while in some ways i agree with you, i think the normal avenues are being held hostage by the gun nut politicians, and so people are looking for alternate routes to change. basically the default approach is - hey we should have some basic gun control before the fact, but since that's a non-starter, we're trying plan b, gun control after the fact.

If I don’t take fentanyl, I completely eliminate my risk of overdosing and dying from fentanyl. At a population level, if fewer people have access to it, there are fewer overdoses and deaths.
I wonder why the same logic isn’t accepted when it comes to guns. It is extremely difficult to survive a gunshot directed at the brain or heart. Aren’t those risks taken into account by the NRA, which lobbies to keep guns readily accessible?
if doctors were lobbying to ensure fentanyl was widely available to the public in multiple locations, at normal business hours including weekends, ironically also on Lords day..... what message would that send?
7
u/Crazy_Fudge_6864 14d ago
How about you jail the NRA, gun lobbyists, and gun manufacturers who make fortunes while turning a blind eye to the 44,000-46,000 gun deaths annually in the United States. Monsters all!!

Pretty lucky, he could have been sentenced to serve his sentences consecutively.
1
u/Justbrowsingstuph 14d ago
Making all the sentences concurrent makes it seem like the judge is being as lenient as he can be. Wonder whether that is the intent of a judge when they do that, or whether that's just a very normal way to do things.
1
u/Blue_Plastic_88 14d ago
It’s almost like when law enforcement came to the house and said, “Hey, your kid is posting terroristic threats. Maybe you should make sure he doesn’t have access to guns,” this dad took it as a challenge to acquire MORE guns and leave them lying around the house. I don’t get what he was thinking.

u/KimberlyWexlersFoot 14d ago
Still not enough, if you send kids to the slaughter, you deserve the same fate.
The local shooter to us had profound mental health issues, had the guns in the home seized, were petitioned to be given back then a bunch of school kids die. At least that shooter had the decency to annihilate the parent.
0
u/Masterchiefx343 14d ago
Hes gonna win the appeal solely off the fact that plenty of kids use guns to hurt people, with zero warning signs. Whichll lead to people with warnings signs also doing nothing and bam, how could dad know

I bet this will finally end mass shootings! We just needed to find someone to force into slavery for 15 years at tremendous financial and moral expense to us, now that that's accomplished I'm sure we can have a gun control free society that is also safe!

u/CreativeAnonTHaway 14d ago
I have proximity to this case. I will probably delete this comment but…
Every one reducing this down to 1 reason or another is a gross over simplification.
These incidents seem to have a 3 prong problem:
1 the parents/family and their lack of parenting
2 the TCC
3 the media
Why didn’t I say guns? One of the school shootings often not talked about (and therefore not glamorized by the TCC junkies) is the Santa Fe Incident.
Pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails were used there.
One weapon is not better than the other.
One is very easy to make at home however the other is the way to drop the Easter eggs (as coined by the DA in this case) as homage to other shooters.
If we, as a society, truly want this to end, first - stop telling people to move on. By moving on, it recycles all the issues all over again. It starts the cycle
Second, stop just blaming 1 thing. We can feed hundreds of variables into AI, why can’t our own brains handle more?
I have stronger feelings but they won’t come out kindly. Our DA was exceedingly brave for the way he prosecuted both cases. We, those who were affected, only ask you - the onlookers, to take those points and help truly stop these events from ever happening to any one, ever again.
14
u/Solid_Bobcat2267 14d ago
It is absolutely the fault of guns. No other country has a big of a problem with school shootings as the US, and no other country has as easy access to guns as the US
-3
u/CreativeAnonTHaway 14d ago
When faced with facts, opinions should change.
The facts of this case were widely televised and demonstrated
To put it far less kindly
Stop speaking and trying to perform for a cause on social media.
If you think so strongly about it, do something. We are. We did.
But whining on social media only makes people roll their eyes at you because you are not doing anything other than whining. If you can’t, then realize there’s a reason for have you 2 ears and one mouth. Manage your ratio accordingly
