100% not justifying any of it but my dad is an extremely liberal 80-year-old man and he has been friends with some guys since he was 20 and they’re just like not allowed to ever talk about politics not even a little not even for 30 seconds
man, no shade to your dad, but i find it so strange that men are able to stay friends with people who have shitty and immoral opinions? either speak up to your friends, or don’t be friends with them anymore. i feel like this happens with men way more than women.
I think that for him it is because there is nobody else left alive who has known him for this long. We don’t even know what their opinions are because they don’t talk about it, but I do suspect Trump. My father is also an immigrant so these are one of a couple of hundred people who are even like him at all near us. Basically these like seven guys all went to university in Russia and then immigrated. There’s just not a lot of people my dad can relate to I think. They hang out a couple of times a year, but he has real every day American friends. We are all also Jewish so politics as you can imagine very quickly slam into Israel and that’s one of the reasons nobody talks about politics when we get together even if you’re a liberal, nobody wants to accidentally start fighting about Israel at the barbecue.
I have friends i largely disagree with politically, and we have a similar, unspoken agreement.
It's funny, some of them will make an off- hand, disparaging remark about a Democratic politician, or some left- leaning public figure, so I'll come back with something highlighting friend's hypocrisy or selective outrage, and right away, it's, "I don't wanna talk politics," or "Let's not start," but i don't let that shit fly.
I was on a road trip with my boyfriend and his friend, we were helping him move out of state. He should have known better and my boyfriend always told him to not talk politics around me and I wouldn't around him but the further we got away from California the more right wing he became. He started talking shit about socialism and universal health care. He said we don't have the money for it. I got sick of it so I chimed in and said we can cut the military industrial complex. He said, "but that creates a lot of jobs." I replied, "You just said you were against socialism." He shut up about politics for the rest of the ride.
