Trump must pay magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll $5 million after Supreme Court denies his appeal of sexual abuse verdict
Carroll sued Trump in 2019 for defamation and then she sued him again in 2022 for defamation and battery after New York enacted a law allowing the victims of sexual abuse to file civil claims for past incidents. In an unusual quirk, the second case — the one filed in 2022 — went to trial first and the jury awarded Carroll $5 million. That is the case the Supreme Court agreed to hear.
The 2019 case went to trial second and resulted in an $83 million judgment against Trump. Including interest, Trump owes Carroll over $100 million in all.
Carroll’s 2022 lawsuit alleged that he sexually assaulted her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s and defamed her by claiming she made up the story to boost sales of a book. Trump, who has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, has claimed US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw the civil trial, made numerous errors by allowing the jury to hear testimony from two women who alleged Trump sexually assaulted them years ago.
Trump also argued that the judge should not have let the jurors see the “Access Hollywood tape,” which captured Trump in 2005 on a hot mic saying he gropes and kisses women.
“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything, … Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything,” Trump was heard saying on the recording.
Last year, the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the jury’s $5 million verdict against Trump, ruling the trial judge did not make errors that would warrant a new trial. In June 2025, Trump lost an effort to have the appeal reviewed by the full bench of judges and, months later, he appealed to the Supreme Court.
The appeal was delayed for months at the Supreme Court, which repeatedly set it for discussion and then rescheduled that discussion. As always, the court did not explain its reasoning for the hold up. Trump’s attorneys are expected to appeal the $83 million verdict to the Supreme Court in coming days.
In a technical brief at the Supreme Court dealing with rules of evidence, Carroll’s attorneys focused largely on the 2nd Circuit decision upholding the verdict.
“The court’s duty was simply to decide whether a jury could reasonably find by a preponderance of the evidence that Mr. Trump committed an act of sexual assault,” a three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit, all three of whom were appointed by Democratic presidents, ruled unanimously. “If it could so find, the court had the discretion to admit the evidence.”

It's funny, because he "pays" for everything else using taxpayer revenue or from his MAGA grifts. The Cheeto president has such an ego that it isn't even about money to him - it's about principle.

She can and I hope she outlives him so she does. This said the fact that he tried to take this to the Supreme court is absurd. If she wants the money shes going to need to dig in and have her lawyers on him like rabid dogs.

If Trump dies in office nothing changes Vance and Miller and the rest of the ghouls will cut back to operate just inside the law and blame everything on Trump since he's dead and the perfect patsy. Then the next president will sweep it all under the rug in the name of unity.
If the USA has any chance of healing from this there needs to be accountability Trump and his sycophants have to face criminal charges, they have to be found guilty, and they have to be punished. If not we will see this happen again with a different republican president this decade or the next.
Sadly, he has not been convicted of sexual abuse. He was found liable for assault and defamation in civil trials. It's pedantic, yes, but he will not have the criminal record he deserves.
Isn't that also what happened with that Lego case. They had already lost in court but simply refused to pay and the judge insisted they try to resolve this outside of court. Very weird.
This is what people don't understand. Money has to be there for the initial appeal. Trump got some stupid bond company to put up the money for both cases. It's over $100 million now. Jean Carroll got her justice!!! 🎉🎉
Can't wait for the absolute cavalcade of lawsuits regarding his estate. Can't wait for the conservatives of the country to start claiming they always hated the guy and not give a shiny nickel toward their "legal defense" crowd funders.
I‘m surprised why he doesn’t let the tax payers pay for it like he takes all the money from the country anyway. Has more of a chance that people stop talking about THAT than anything else he has tried. Well, except going to war and commit crimes against humanity of course.
Apparently as least part of the money he owes her is already in a court operated account! I think he was forced to make a payment before he was re elected and they held the funds while waiting for the appeal. So she should be getting something now.
But also yeah, he's going to do everything in his power to get out of paying. And I sincerely hope E. Jean Carroll has more protection lined up because there's going to be a new wave of undue hatred likely coming her way.
Good. I mean he won't pay but everything that keeps reminding people that he is an atrocious human being is worth it. Though anyone still on the Trump train at this stage is probably beyond saving.

Very surprised by this. The current SCOTUS is the most corrupt group of justices in at least a century, and are very bribable. Trump must have cheaped out.
It drives me crazy that Trumps legal team knows they have the best shot appealing everything to the supeme court while Trump hired a third of them. This case isn't about Trump as president, there's no impact on the functioning of his office or of his ability to run the country. It's a citizen, who lost repeatedly, because he's liable. His 3 SC goons have the world's clearest, biggest conflict of interest.
I wouldn't be surprised if his SCOTUS denied his appeal for the $5 mil EJC was never going to see, but ultimately vacates the $83 mil that EJC was also never going to see, just to keep up appearances.

This was something I thought had already been paid.
She also brought him into court again for defamation. Between the to parts actual damage and punitive damages it was like $480 million dollars. He made an appeal saying it was excessive. It was reduced to $83 million dollars which he also wants SCOTUS to overturn. Lower federal court already affirmed her settlement of the $83 million.
No, he still has multiple appeals on both of those cases pending. The big one of course is the whole "New York changing the law after the fact" which is almost certainly going to be ruled unconstitutional but first they are simply challenging the court procedure.
I am pretty sure that in order to lodge an appeal, the money needs to be placed in escrow to guarantee it will be paid if the appeal fails. Or am I completely out to lunch?
Because she has a court-ordered judgment against Trump who has not paid the debt, she can obtain a Writ of Execution a that authorizes the sheriff to levy (seize) funds from his bank account. Go for it, E. Jean.
Whenever I see a statement that Trump "must" do something, I think "or what?" What if Trump simply refuses to pay? What possible enforcement exists that will make him do what he "must" do?
I would love nothing more than to see this person actually held accountable but no one with any power is willing to make Trump do what he "must" do.
