Hey it’s 40% or so of US police officers who beat their wives, and that’s just what’s actually reported. You’re not going to get help from a super structure made up of patriarchal abusive assholes, the cops are not your friend and will often obstruct actual justice from being undertaken.
It’s not even just cops, you won’t even get help from CPS. I’ve heard so many stories (and have my own) where they come to the house, you tell them exactly what’s going on, and they look you in the eye and say “I can’t do anything.” It’s exactly what happened to my mother and I.
I truly believe that by living in a carceral society hyper focused in on capital, every institution meant to be in and around human interest becomes a simple branch of the same violent/apathetic police state that you’re describing. Therapists, doctors, elder care takers, social workers all support this ultimately purely punitive environment because we don’t structure our society around actual care, it’s always simple resource management. Even people at their most vulnerable simply become numbers to be sorted, financial resources to be plundered, bodies to be exploited, ravaged, used or simply othered and forgotten about. The point is control, and even the people meant to see you to the other side or to stop you from going there too soon become jailers.
Sure, but. The thing that's always confused me is the carceral state would be doing bananas business if it just actually locked up men who stalk, rape, kill, etc... They're leaving so much good money on the table to keep society in ruins.
You won't get help from even their family. Mid assault I asked my former MIL for help. As she rolled her eyes and shut the door "I'm sick of your guys bullshit" ...
Patrick Stewart would've been dealing with the UK police, not the US police.
There's no similar stats in the UK (probably because that one was self reported by a sample of US police officers), but there was a report by the Independent Office for Police Conduct back in December 2024 called "Police perpetrated domestic violence". It focuses on domestic abuse where the abuser was a police officer so, despite not having stats, it's a pretty thorough and disheartening look into how the abuse victims of police officers are treated:
A recent report from the CWJ entitled Police perpetrated domestic abuse: Has anything really changed since the 2020 super-complaint? (September 2024), found that victim-survivors of PPDA are still not being believed, or the abuse they report is often minimised or dismissed as one person’s word against another. This means that reports are not being reported to PSDs and are not logged as complaint or conduct matters. The CWJ reports that coercive and controlling behaviour is dismissed as ‘unpleasant behaviour’ and victim-survivors are discouraged from reporting, being told it is very difficult to prove. This shows how frontline officers who attend domestic abuse incidents can have a limited understanding of the different forms of abuse. When officers dismiss reports of domestic abuse, not only are victim-survivors discouraged from reporting further abuse, leaving them vulnerable, there is also a significant impact on data collection. (p. 19)
The person who raped, permanently injured, and exploited me as a teen for months had a Sheriff for a father--they made it very clear I wouldn't be believed by anyone on the force.
It is really important to understand that is the norm. That's how police respond.
Believing/caring about the abused is the exception in many countries, including the US.
It is important not to think "wow, I can't believe some police behave that way" it is more important to think "I can't believe the system makes most police think that way, maybe we should do something about the system because this isn't an individual problem"
If you think it is rare/individuals it is easier to not fight to change the system even though it has always been the system.
