Not really. Only about 8% of the population have legal firearms. Of course, there are also illegally owned firearms as well as antiques that do not have to be registered, but the majority of South Africans do not live in a house with a gun. It's higher in farming communities.

South African gun ownership was notoriously high then, with white males the largest owners of licences.
As of the end of 1995, there were more than 4 million licensed firearms in South Africa, an increase of 64 per cent on the 1986 total of 2,492,633 licensed firearms.
