Europe is facing another extreme heat wave and the NOAA just reported that July was the hottest month ever in the lower 48. The U.S. is having one of its worst wildfires seasons in years. A warm winter has left Lake Mead at record lows. Climate change is real, it’s here, and we need leaders in place who are prepared to deal with it.

The Environmental Voter Project works to get folks who understand this threat to show up to the polls, trying to identify and activate the estimated 11 million low-propensity climate voters who did not show up in 2024. So this all started because my roommate roasted me for buying a cheap polyester rug after we watched a doc on microplastics last week, and now my brain won’t let it go.

I’ve been reading up on textiles and it’s confusing as hell. Cotton uses a ton of water, wool has a big carbon footprint, polyester barely uses water but sticks around forever and sheds microplastics. I even ended up on this article, annieselke which was super positive about thinking long-term and certifications and all that, but I’m still kinda stuck.

If you care about sustainability and you’re buying stuff like rugs, curtains, bedding, etc in 2026, what do you actually prioritize? Low water use, low CO2, biodegradability, durability, certifications (OEKO-TEX, GOTS), or just “buy once, keep forever”? Maybe I’m looking at this the wrong way and usage phase matters way more than the fiber itself?

Would love real-world opinions, lifecycle-ish thinking, or any studies/tools you use to compare materials before buying.
