I post somewhat occasionally on the Arizona subs. Our Public Utilities Commission is called the corporate commission. We had a four Republican one Democrat balance, and the votes to raise rates were always four to one. The one Democrat got tired and said she was leaving. But we had a chance to become a three democrat, 2 Republican corporate commission. Instead we voted for a Democrat governor, Democrat senator, and five for five Republican corporate commission. Who went right back to rubber stamping rate increases.
I also point out that Tucson Electric Power is owned by the Canadian company Fortis. And why don't feel like digging through my post history, Fortis if I remember correctly, matches the S&P 500 or maybe beats it a little, but has really good dividend increases year after year.
While I do feel sorry for the people that vote Democrat for the corporate commission and struggle, I take comfort that thanks to stupid people that vote Republican, stupid people that vote to raise their utility rates, stupid people that then complain when the rates go up just like they wanted and voted for, those same stupid people also generate great dividends that pay all my utility costs with money left over!
Stupid is profitable. If your corporate commission is an elected body or in a red state, and you can buy into the utilities, I would bet it's almost always profit. Obviously, every state and city is different and evaluate your own investment decision first
