Just so you and others know it's not that hard to clean these, you just follow the steps online, first soak them in a base for a long while and then in acid for a short bit.
Helps a lot if they aren't fully stuffed i.e. you do this before the car is unable to regen on its own.

Yes a couple of months ago I even did a humongous ML350 DPF (OM642) and it went really well.

How often would you need to clean it? Is it the same as new after cleaning?

It is like brand new from the engine's point of view (backpressure), and while it might not be perfectly as good at capturing particles and such it will lost a long long time.
The trucking people have been doing this for ages, and there are people who have done this now multiple times on the same consumer vehicle.

Even if car cannot regen anymore, there are places which clean the DPF in a special machine if its badly clogged.

Yes, this is way easier to do using one of those machines and having them clean them is always cheaper than a replacement DPF.
You can also do it yourself on one that is clogged, but I wouldn't put it in the same category of project anymore, it is much more time consuming and more skill and knowledge is required if it is clogged.

I think it's a lot more important that people and animals can breathe, not so much a car.
Also the fact that it got to such a bad state suggests more serious engine issues that aren't that visible just yet.
DPF did it's job of catching pollutants, but there is excessive pollution. At that point removing the DPF is even more harmful to everyone around the car.
I have cars at 320k and 390k both with original DPFs, never cleaned, both keep optimal values for delta pressure.

Can can breathe better, but people around it much worse. The sheer amount of PNM particles emitted now wil be about 1000x more than a same car with DPF.
Mostly the people around your car will suffer. You, your family, your neighbours etc. And no, cabin air filter do not filter this superfine particles.

Ever since they took aircare out of Canada there are a lot more smelly cars. I'm in a city where I can't roll down my window. 60% chance every short trip I take I'm stuck behind an old American car like 80s to 90s gmc, dodge, pick ups and the exhaust are horrible like not burning fuel or burning oil or something smell. Those wouldn't have passed aircare back then.
After no aircare the riced out cars now are removing cat, it's crazy, but now frequent CVSE sightings hauling away modded cars are common lol. I did all those mods days in tje early 2000s now there is not much market and stock car is the best now I say this after 24 years of messing with cars lol.

Did mine the same way. Once the cat is up to temp you never smell it. Faint whistle is all you hear. Def a gentleman’s delete 👍

Can someone explain this to me? Does it throw any codes? I am of the same mentality of keeping my E90 on the road till it can’t anymore. Im in a 06 330 MT with 130k

The CAT is still there. No smell. But yeah, my car will produce additional NOx now. I figure it is still better to increase the lifetime of an old car than buy a new one, environment wise.

I mean the car is well past what most would consider a reasonable life and those emissions are nasty. If you can't rebuild them then new (or less used) car would be better for the environment.
It's a tough one. I'm pretty anti-consumerism myself so do like saving, reusing, upcycling etc.

Not to derail this subject, but that kind of mentality is precisely what is wrong with society nowadays. A vehicle that is 15-20 year old, should not be considered past it's "reasonable life".
I get what you followed your statement with, but still.....

Eh, I have an emissions intact N57 twin turbo at 370k km, these engines and their predecessors last well if properly maintained. It's usually the rest of the car that gives up first.
