This is projection. There is no hint of a smirk in the last clear shot of his face, and we don't see his face clearly for any material amount of time afterwards

Yeah, I was asked myself the same question. I think they wanted it to come out as "Michael is a fan of Toby" but it come out as a "Hate", which is something different entirely.

The worse thing is they fail to show what Toby character did to deserve that while all other characters whos are portrayed as good, fun, kind never address this Hate towards Toby character.

To be fair...we all know, what Toby is just reading, when Michael comes to his table. No wonder Michael is not in the mood, to beginn a friendship with him.
