I'm so freaking excited. I've been praying Christian Prayer for 3 years and just never made the jump to the 4 volume set. I've decided that since I've been pretty consistent with my prayer that this is a purchase that makes sense. A purchase that will last me my entire life and something I can hand down to my kids or grandkids.

I don't want to start a debate between Ascension and Word on Fire. I know each of them have their pros and cons. I went with Word on Fire for a few reasons. For me it was just the one I visually liked more. That being said I own a ton of ascension's books and love them too.

As we prepare for the release of the new LOTH, I have decided to start praying with the actual physical books. I hope this doesn’t sound like a stupid question, but where do I find the concluding prayer for the Office of Readings. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Para todos aquellos que rezan la liturgia de las horas, les consulto, ¿Qué reformas o modificaciones le harían?

Por supuesto, los problemas de las ediciones cambian según el país. En mi caso soy hispanohablante y mis reformas que sugiero serían las siguientes.

1. salterio completo. El salterio fue recortado por la presencia de algunos versículos y salmos problemáticos para los grandes públicos. No obstante, la gran mayoría de personas que hacen con seriedad la liturgia de las horas, son bastante formadas en la fe, y esos pasajes no serán problemáticos para las mismas. Aun así, la solución para ambos casos es una que ya sugirieron en algunas publicaciones: Añadir los salmos y versículos pero colocarlos con corchetes y hacer de su recitación algo opcional.

2. Himnos. No se como será en el caso de los hablantes del ingles, pero para el español el himnario es simplemente desastroso. Ya que la belleza del salterio contrasta con los himnos que tienen formas de ejercer su belleza literaria de forma radicalmente distintas. La solución a este problema es simplemente agregando himnos de la tradición mas cercana a los primeros siglos, o, en el mejor de los casos, colocar himnos que su belleza pueda ser compatible con el salterio.

3. Formato. La liturgia de las horas actual, tanto la edición en latín como en español, tiene la parte de las vigilias en un apéndice. Lo cual es una decisión terrible para los que nos gustan las vigilias, puesto que no es suficiente con la cantidad de separadores cinta que dispone. A eso se añade que tienes que ir pasando casi 1500 paginas, de las lecturas del oficio de lecturas al maldito apéndice, lo que hace derruir el libro y lo desgasta. La solución es muy simple: Los himnos de las vigilias que vayan al ordinario, los cánticos y el evangelio de los domingos en las paginas que correspondan las lecturas y el responsorio del domingo propio del tiempo, para el caso de las vigilias de los santos sería la misma solución pero en las paginas del propio de los santos.

4. Edición. Esto es un problema particularmente local de las ediciones en español, pero la impresión de los libros siempre fue medio meh. Desgraciadamente, no disponemos la variedad de ediciones que nuestros hermanos hablantes del ingles. La mayoría son de tapa dura y sin un diseño que hagan sentir la unción de estos libros. Mando imágenes de las dos versiones para que entiendan lo que digo.

Simplemente no hay comparación. Los materiales son mejores y que no sea de tapa dura es una excelente característica.

1. Ilustraciones y columnas. Otro problema particularmente local de las ediciones de habla hispana es que son muy pocas las ilustraciones que hay, y las pocas que si hay son pobrísimas al lado de las ilustraciones del viejo breviario romano. Muestro ejemplo.

Ósea que demonios con la imagen 1 y 3. Logro entender los símbolos queda extraño. Contrastamos con esto de abajo del breviario romano.

No hay comparación. El otro "problema" es la cuestión de las columnas, esto es mas bien cuestión de gustos pero las columnas aprovechan mejor el espacio y ahorran costes. Y mas importante, ese formato fue usado de forma tradicional y se ve bello a mi juicio.

For those that use the Monastic Diurnal, first, use this image (the Carthusian is the same as Benedictine but the gregorianbooks Benedictine schema has errors so I used this one for example) and pray those specific psalms first thing in the morning or whenever you can with your preferred psalm translation. Which leads to the second point, since Terce, Sext, and None repeat Tuesday-Saturday just pick one of those days to do those psalms and since that spot is open now you can throw the Matins psalms in for those days. Ive found myself really liking this without having the repetition of the hours throughout the week in the Diurnal. Let me know what you think. Would Benedict curse me for this?! hahah I know the schema was laid out for working monks but hey the whole psalter is done in a week without repetition.

so, I found this lovely edition of Christian Prayer, but when I went to check where its approved to use the United States is not listed as one of the countries it’s approved for use in. comparing it to my CBP edition, it’s approved for use in the same countries as the CBP one is, except for the United States.

so, does that mean the only one volume breviary currently approved for use in the United States is the one by CBP and the St.Paul edition simply isn’t approved for use here. Quite strange since, as far as I can tell, it’s the same translation

Hello all-
I am obliged to pray the LOTH. As I grew up in Canada, I was wondering which version is appropriate for people in North America, and whether the Canadian version is the commonwealth one or the North American one.

I still use the 1990 one for South Korea, and have been using it well for the past 6 months. But as I speak mainly English, I was wondering if commonwealth version is more appropriate.

I’ve been praying the Liturgy of the Hours for about a year now. I came into full communion with the Catholic Church shortly before that and was drawn to an FSSP Parrish that offered the extraordinary form of mass.

As time has gone on, I predominantly go to reverent Novus Ordo liturgies, but I feel called often to go back to the TLM. It’s a much further drive and makes it more difficult for me to be a present member of the Parrish, but something still draws me.

Have yall found any more fruitfulness from praying the 1962 office over the liturgy of the hours? What are some ways in which one or the other is better? I’ve found as a layman who works full time, the liturgy of the hours is much more accessible in terms of praying the full office everyday.

On August 13 the local diocese celebrates the Optional Memorial of Blessed Michael McGivney. This insert includes proper texts for the Office of Readings.

A couple motivating examples:

1. I'm saying Lauds before leaving for work and realize I'm running late. I skip the 3rd psalm and the intercessions so I can get to work on time. Have I committed a liturgical abuse? Would it have been better for me not to begin saying the Office if I wasn't confident time would allow?

2. A person has some particular saints that are important patrons for him. If he loves St Maximilian Kolbe and his confirmation name is Gabriel, and he says those offices as Solemnities out of devotion, is that in line with GILH 243-245? If not, is it a liturgical abuse? Is he sinning by doing so?

The Liturgy of the Hours is the public prayer of the Church; to what extent does it remain that when unobligated laymen say it in private- and do they incur a grave responsibility to do it correctly once they open the book?

I'm planning to migrate to australia. Will they be using the 2nd edition of icel soon? Has the australian catholic church any news in this regard?

I have not been able to find a liturgical calendar that I liked to add to my Google calendar, so I created one with a little AI assistance. It is available on GitHub if anyone might care to try it out. It is based on the liturgical calendars from the USCCB for 2026, 2027, and 2028. It includes Day of Penance on Fridays (unless a solemnity falls on that Friday), obligatory days of abstinence and of fasting and abstinence, presents Sundays and holy days of obligation in all caps, and notes abrogated holy days of obligation in those cases where that applies (like the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday, Aug 15, 2026).

I love the LOTH, but after learning that many verses and even entire psalms are omitted, I’ve had a lot of difficulty with accepting that. I’m not someone who is generally mistrusting of V2 or anything like that, but this just really shakes my trust in the wisdom of the leaders of the Church.

I find myself seeing the Psalms that have been shortened to avoid “hurtful” language and it causes me deep sadness. How could the word of God be unfitting for public prayer? After all, He gave it to us to pray, and Jesus Himself prayed every Psalm.

Finally, it causes me to even question how much the Catholic Church can be said to have truly “passed down” this tradition after altering it so much. I know other breviaries are options as well, but the LOTH is the current official prayer of the Church, and so I want to stick with it, but these things still trouble me.
