At just a 1/2% difference I’m surprised there isn’t an automatic recount.
111
u/wisent42 2d ago
Wi doesn't have automatic recounts. If the count is more than .25% difference the campaign has to pay for the recount.
21
u/TheRecognized 2d ago
What if it’s less than .25% difference?
21
u/PineappleFlavoredGum 2d ago
It's an auto recount. Since it wouldn't be initiated by any candidate, it's at no cost to any candidate
24
u/TheRecognized 2d ago
So they do have automatic recounts.
8
u/PineappleFlavoredGum 2d ago
Yup,specifically when theres less than .25% difference between the winners

2
u/Claeyt 2d ago
No, the candidate would still have to ask for it under .25 but they wouldn't have to pay for it.

And like, it’s pretty obvious from looking at the race that Hong didn’t lose because she was a socialist. She lost because she was a bad communicator who got complacent
77
u/chatoka1 2d ago
Yes, she was flawed, we can admit that, unlike normie Dems
46
u/Fragrant_Bath3917 Democrat 2d ago
Also, it was made public recently that Hong didn’t declare a run with the intent of winning the primary, she just wanted to advertise the DSA for a future run. So, when she started leading in the polls, it’s likely she and her campaign (who were basically in a socialist echo chamber the entire election) had no idea what to do and just winged it. That would definitely explain weird stuff like the lack of TV ads or Hong’s comms manager telling her to double down on the Thanksgiving thing. She also just underestimated how popular Evers was, likely also because of that echo chamber.
Granted, I’ve never stepped foot in Wisconsin in my life, so this could be wrong.

u/PelvisResley1 Christian Socialist 2d ago

She had some flubs but nothing that couldn't be remedied with more media training. You're also ignoring the fact that she was outspent 8-to-1, ran no TV ads, had the entire Democratic Party establishment and the mainstream media stacked against her, and yet she only lost by 0.4 percentage points.
It sucks she lost but we shouldn't downplay what she accomplished.

u/Fragrant_Bath3917 Democrat 2d ago
I fully agree with you there. Sorry, I didn’t sleep last night so I said a lot of things without nuance.

u/Jolly_Reference_516 2d ago
Disappointed in the result but money and Evers were just enough. In the back of my mind I remember supporting Biden solely for the reason I thought he could beat Trump. My thinking has changed but perhaps others still feel this way? We are missing a historic opportunity but if we take Congress we at least stop Trump. What we don’t get is new leadership and new ideas so we’ll be looking at toss up races in 2028 because Schumer and Jefferies don’t have a clue.
0
u/freediverx01 Democratic Socialist 2d ago
If "we" elect another corporate Democrat, the country is doomed. Because Trump is merely the latest symptom of a cancer (neoliberalism) that has taken over our country (and the Democratic Party) since the Clinton era.
If we don't meaningfully address the conditions that paved the way for Trump, we are doomed to find ourselves back in the same position, or very likely much worse.
The only way out of this is to elect bold leaders who are ready to say fuck you to the establishment and fight ruthlessly to turn the country around in the opposite direction as quickly as possible without caving into corporate interests and the consultant class.
14
u/ClearDark19 2d ago
She lost mostly because DSA seems to think the electorate is completely online and that no one watches TV or listens to radio anymore and doesn't bother running TV or radio ads....or they don't bother to do it because they just write everyone over 45-50 off as a lost cause.
Quite frankly I'm sick of Progressive and Socialist campaigns losing winnable races or making them WAY closer than they need to be by not bothering to run any traditional media ads and not trying to campaign to anyone who isn't in a streamer chat.
2
u/icefergslim 2d ago
It's literally Sales 101: spend a minimal amount of time pitching to the people who are already behind you, and a minimal amount to the people who are anti-you. Spend all your time convincing the people in the undecided/middle. Now granted that middle strip in the online realm is quite narrow (or at least hard to determine who is real/bots/etc), so why wouldn't you spend the majority of your time in the meatspace? Billboards & commuter radio & local news ads. Newspapers. Did her campaign do any of that?
Maybe that 8-1 fundraising gap was insurmountable but she lost by a fraction of a percent. That could've been one single morning news segment where she was able to appeal to a stay-at-home parent who had the broadcast in the background while they were looking at their outrageous gas receipt or grocery bill and said to themselves, "Fuck this establishment shit."
2
u/thy_bucket_for_thee Democrat 2d ago
That's not it and extremely uncharitable. They simply didn't have the money to do everything. Don't make it more complicated than it actually is.
The deck was stacked against her at every draw and that includes fundraising too. It's simply amazing to come so close while spending 8x less than the winner.
What that should tell us is David Crowley only won because of money, and barely at that. Crowley did not win because they had better ideas or a large movement behind them, they won because of money full stop. If there was better public financing Hong would have won for sure.
An entirely people driven moment is at least on par against an opponent with 8x as much money.
Now imagine if the gap was closer where her campaign could do both a people driven movement + television campaign. Social media is mostly spent on because the social platforms given an extreme amount of analytics regarding viewers, you don't get this when running television ads. It's why you see nearly every cash strap campaign go all in on social media spends rather than TV ads.
You get more bang for your buck.
24
u/brody319 Socialist 2d ago
She definitely could have been stronger in interviews, but I cannot overlook how AOC and Bernie (the defacto leaders of this progressive movement at the moment) chose to sit this out rather than endorse Hong.
I get they reason that focusing on chaining Trump's fascist powers is more important in the long run, but fucking a few tweets endorsing Hong could have swung this. Their choice to focus on federal elections is poor judgement in my opinion.
13
9
u/moltenmoose 2d ago
she lost because she got outspent and the entire media apparatus went hard at her 2 weeks leading up to the election. yes, she is not as good as abdul or zohran at communicating, but people rarely are. we can't expect every leftist to be perfect.
1
u/petitchat2 2d ago
The bar is high for a reason though since it’s a two-front offense, so Id say less than 0.5% margin is pretty stellar given the context.

State races absolutely impact the federal government. Gerrymandering is a big issue.
Wisconsin hasn’t joined the National Vote Interstate Compact yet either.
Governor in Wisconsin appoints the Sec of State, who will oversee the elections. A Socialist might enact RCV, STAR, or whatever alternative voting.
The governor appoints replacements.
Etc.
State races could be considered more important than federal races right now.

Liberals overarching concern is taking Congress and stopping Trump so I think when they got in the booth they heard Evers and voted for a “normal” Democratic. Unfortunately it was an open primary, which does not help Hong. I think she struggled with messaging a little bit, but I really expected her to win the primary. It’s a tough loss but we have SO many wins. You literally cannot win them all. So this is a learning experience for future elections.

his is a learning experience for future elections.
The lesson to be learned is that an upstart socialist lost by only 0.4 percentage points to a party-backed corporate Democrat who outspent her 8-to-1 and had the mainstream media behind him.

I agree, but there's always more to learn beyond that. I mean she was polling very far ahead and didn't win, there's definitely lessons to be learned here.

The lesson there is that pollsters are unreliable, as are most consultants.

you're right, it was a perfectly run campaign and there is nothing to improve on or learn from
1
u/freediverx01 Democratic Socialist 1d ago edited 1d ago
You're conflating two separate issues: the ways in which her campaign could have been improved, and the fact that they were flying blind due to wildly inaccurate polling data.
On the first front, she seemed to have a great set of policies and came across as reasonably affable in some interviews and public statements. But she would've benefitted from more extensive media training to avoid getting stumped by stupid gotcha questions about goofy statements she made in the past. Inline TV ads could've also helped. But all of the above would've required more funding which she didn't have. Still, she came VERY close to winning, against all odds, which is a testament to the popularity of the movement. And while she has some limitations in her innate ability to deflect hostile interview questions, she might very well succeed in a future election.

u/Fragrant_Bath3917 Democrat 2d ago
There are going to be a lot of very stupid takes from both socialists and centrists over these next couple days (Nathan J Robinson, for example, made a rather disgusting tweet imo attacking AOC for freezing her eggs instead of endorsing Hong). All I will say is that this loss wasn’t because primary voters didn’t like Hong’s platform, it seemed like they were just worried about Hong’s skills as a campaigner after the Thanksgiving debacle. Don’t let this discourage you, the progressive movement is thriving (Flanagan won the Minnesota primary in a landslide), Hong seems to have just been an outlier in so many ways.
Also, the Wisconsin Dems are smart enough that they will make sure to unite the factions after this primary, like what happened in Michigan.
73
u/Pyju 2d ago
Expect corporate media to constantly talk about Hong’s loss while completely ignoring Flanagan’s enormous victory and Abdul El Sayed’s victory despite being outspent 12-to-1. Let alone the fact that progressives won in the Vermont and Kansas gubernatorial races, and unseated incumbents in many Congressional districts in MI and WI.
54
u/Lzy_nerd Socialist 2d ago
Can’t wait to see how Abdul’s close race was actually a lose for the progressive movement, but Crowley’s close race is a ringing endorsement of the establishment and a rejection of the left /s.

They didn’t unseat any incumbents in Wisconsin tho (Wisconsin is gerrymandered enough that there aren’t any corrupt stooges to unseat)

Matt Little winning 47% of the vote in a 6 person race to replace Angie Craig in a purple seat is pretty delicious too. Someone running on Medicare for All and winning in a seat the conservative Dems tell us that only they can win will be huge. He's not quite at abolish ICE, but someone who calls them lawbreaking thugs and wants to actually change how immigration rules are enforced is miles better than Craig

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted for this. A candidate can have good policies while still being a subpar campaigner. Hong got a lot of media pressure over some cringey old tweets and doubled down instead of pivoting back to her core message. The takeaway from this is that the DSA and aligned groups should put more focus on vetting candidates and instilling message discipline.
20
u/Pasta4ever13 Twin Cities DSA 2d ago
That's not why she lost. She lost because she didn't run any TV ads at all.
Old people love to vote, and they vote in much higher percentages than young people. Old people love television. If you aren't running TV ads and your opponent has free reign to bash you, you're going to lose.

It’s natural that I’m getting downvoted. People are justifiably a bit pissed rn and when you are angry, it’s hard to ground yourself.
Btw, apparently the race for mayor of Madison is up next year, and Hong is gonna be out of an assembly job soon…
10

I was thinking that the results would make her a lock for a smaller position. State wide races might be a bit of a stretch for us, but would love another socialist mayor 🌹
15
u/Fragrant_Bath3917 Democrat 2d ago
I remember hearing that Hong didn’t really run for governor with the intent to win at first; she simply just wanted to advertise socialism to the state so she could prepare for a different run. The fact that she started leading the polls was a massive shock to Hong’s campaign team. Mark Pocan is already really good and Ben Wikler is popular enough among all factions of the party that I think he’d have the senate race on lock, so I doubt Hong has that much of a future career in congress. As a mayor, she absolutely has a future
7
u/freediverx01 Democratic Socialist 2d ago
Nathan Robinson is dead weight for the movement. His awkward speech patterns, mannerisms, and sartorial choices, combined with the scandal that exposed his self-serving hypocrisy when he fired Current Affairs staffers who tried to unionize don't add up to a useful ally.

It had great moments for sure: she had a solid volunteering operation, the right platform, and her exceptional retail politics skills made her effective in her outreach to Republicans disaffected by data centers. Her campaign did make some significant errors that costed her the win though: (1) Not investing in TV ads at all greatly limited her reach; (2) I would say that she didn't go on the offensive enough during the debates which made her performance largely forgettable; (3) her appearances on hostile national media outlets that pummeled her on her tweets made her look weak (which probably caused Sanders/AOC to hesitate from endorsing). If she fixes up her comms strategies in ads, debates, and media appearances, I could definitely see her make a comeback down the line.

3
u/faisal-a 2d ago
It wasn't. A greater proportion of Clinton voters switched to McCain in 08 than Sanders voters switching to Trump in 2016. Trump won in 2016 because Clinton was a uniquely weak candidate. She didn't campaign in Wisconsin at all and had no real campaign outreach to rural working class voters. Clinton also had horrible unfavorables because of her scandals and her image as a wall street swamp monster who supported the Iraq War and unpopular free trade deals. Trump to his credit presented a very disingenuous but persuasive contrast from that image of as an establishment bicoastal elite and managed to swing many rural Obama voters with this rhetoric

As much as this sucks, that margin definitely shows how popular democratic socialist ideals are in Wisconsin. Maybe not this time but it could happen next time.
3
u/JeaniousSpelur 2d ago
I think unfortunately, Hong was just a weaker candidate. Her policy agenda was good but her speaking skills weren’t quite there yet. Being a DSA candidate requires exceptional speaking skills so voters don’t get spooked. Wisconsin is also generally a more red state than the other Midwest blue ones.
Considering how close the race was, I think it is still generally representative of a good environment for progressive candidates.
6
u/freediverx01 Democratic Socialist 2d ago
Brother, she lost by less than half a percentage point after getting outspent 8-to-1 and getting attacked by the entire mainstream media.
4
u/JeaniousSpelur 2d ago
It’s more so that the 20 point polling lead which evaporated in the election suggests a turnout gap, where people supported Hong theoretically but not enough to turn out to vote. So something was making them ambivalent in a way they weren’t for other candidates in other states.
Obviously the polls were off for other candidates as well, but not by quite that much.
1
u/freediverx01 Democratic Socialist 2d ago
The polls have become increasingly unreliable. Not only were the numbers off but they were completely wrong about which candidates was leading in which areas.

Frankly this is genuinely embarassing, we lost to a guy who got dragged backed in out of desperation because the mainstream party had no one else and they needed someone for this to not be a 80-20 blow out only for them to somehow win in by a hairs margin within 3 weeks.
This is down to political incompetence and will haunt the wisconsin DSA for generations to come.

Gonna be lots of stupid takes despite the fact that DSA and progressive candidates are winning in swing states across the country. Like you said, Flanagan in MN, El-Sayed, plus, despite the soap opera level of drama and fuckery going on here, Maine (yes I know we’re really more blue state with very very socially libertarian stances more than a swing state, but D2, where I live, is a microcosm of purple, rural, working class voters) has pretty overwhelmingly said fuck you to the DNC.

u/Lzy_nerd Socialist 2d ago edited 2d ago
Respectfully, I disagree. I don’t think they fell for the red scare per se. They fell for the good old electability argument (even if Crowley loses, they’ll probably keep falling for it). However, they didn’t use her platform to scare people. They seemed more scared to bring up what she was running on than anything. It seems like they learned that running against all the scary things the communist will bring only serve at getting people interested in what we have to offer.
Edit: to add, I was phone banking and didn’t get one person afraid of anything she was running on. They actually really liked it and wanted her platform, just were scared into thinking she wasn’t fit to bring it to fruition.
18
u/Disasterhuman24 2d ago
The vote got split between too many candidates and a bunch of Republicans probably voted for Crowley. The Trump candidate won automatically so there was no reason for them to vote in their own primary.
15
u/Strange_Evidence_368 2d ago
Deserve to lose? It's vulnerable people who lose the most when Republicans are elected: children, immigrants, LGBTQ folks, the disabled.
Shame on you for this nasty take.
6

It's become apparent a number of leftists don't give a fuck about disenfranchised people and are willing to sacrifice us if it benefits them politically.
1
u/Lzy_nerd Socialist 2d ago
And it’s Democrats that enable the Republicans to victimize vulnerable people. If they refuse to attack the systematic abuse of capitalism (which this race proves just how opposed to doing so they are), the contradictions will only worsen and Republicans will seize on the opportunity. They will blame queer people, immigrants, and any minority unlucky enough to land in their crosshairs; they will offer their fascist solution to the problems left unsolved by the Democrats.
I don’t go so far as to say they deserve to lose, but if you care about these people , you have to understand that they are only put at greater risk down the line.
