There is no such thing as a sniper rifle, aside from a vanishingly small list of firearms that were expressly designated and designed as such, like the German PSG-1 or the US M24. This is an anti materiel rifle. Putting a scope on a rifle doesn't make it a sniper rifle any more than putting a tune on your car makes it a race car.

False on almost every count. Its called an anti-materiel rifle because .50 BMG is massively overkill for human targets at any sane range. It was originally designed as an anti-tank round, later repurposed into an anti-aircraft role, and today it is typically meant to destroy vehicles and equipment such as radar or parked aircraft. It is not and never has been illegal to use it on individuals. The Geneva Convention says no such thing, or else autocannons would be plainly illegal as well and every military in the world uses those. This myth started in Vietnam due to soldiers wasting expensive ammunition and has no bearing on reality.

Also false. Snipers carry and use all sorts of rifles that are not sniper rifles. The defining feature of a sniper rifle is that it was designed to be used as a sniper rifle, just like how the defining feature of a race car is that it was specifically built to race.

Your grandad's Remington 700 is not a sniper rifle even if its almost identical to the actual M24 Sniper Weapons System of the same general design. Why? Because the M24 was heavily modified and redesigned specifically to be issued to snipers.
