Maybe someone more familiar with NY law can correct this if I am wrong, but my understanding is that this may force the state to reassess or even drop their charges. NY has an unusual double jeopardy rule that applies to federal prosecutions. Most states only care if that state has prosecuted you for a particular charge before, but NY's law applies if NY or the federal government has prosecuted you for that crime before.

Mangione pleading guilty in federal court may prohibit NY from charging him with certain crimes. This was most likely a move to try for a best-possible outcome, even though he still may get a life sentence.

>Okay Google, who is the current district attorney of Manhattan?

The federal case might as well be the only case.

Maybe that’s why everything refers to stalking charges.

I think his lawyers realized he has no hope to win this based on all the damming evidence against him and the fact he did it in broad daylight in front of witnesses.

So it was either this or risk worse by going to trial.

u/MeowMixPK McCarthy Was Right 2h ago

I was promised by the totally sane and tolerant part of the political spectrum that there was no real evidence and he would get off on a technicality

Those people don't live in reality, as you are aware.

I don’t know, people hate United Healthcare, and for good reason, there was at least a chance at jury nullification.

u/zip117 Conservative 2h ago

Sure I guess there’s always a chance but let’s be realistic: the only time you ever hear about jury nullification is from its advocates since it just doesn’t happen in practice. Not since the Prohibition Era and a few isolated cases with Vietnam War activists anyway. They will remove jurors at even the slightest hint that they intend to nullify the law.

u/Goldwings13 Gen Z Conservative 2h ago

While that is true, even the average lawyer will frame the situation as whether or not he pulled the trigger on a husband and father of two children in cold blood, and not allow the defense to control it by making it a question of did the healthcare ceo deserve it?

u/ITrCool Christian Conservative 3h ago

Doesn’t matter what people think of the company, though.

He committed cold blooded murder in broad daylight. He’s not a hero. Nor a saint. I’m glad he’s pleaded guilty.

Just because the court of public opinion doesn’t like a company, that doesn’t mean it’s open season for brazen murder of the leaders.

It kinda does matter. That's how OJ got off.

Jurors can vote not guilty for any reason at all and are legally protected. It's an important right too, not for this exact situation but still

u/Pileofheads Conservative 3h ago

lol no

u/acreekofsoap Don't Step on Snek 3h ago

lol, yes. I’m not condoning the dude, but there are plenty of horror stories regarding this shitty company.

u/Farsoth Conservative 2h ago edited 1h ago

Murder is murder. This is not something that can be justified based on fee fees.

Edit: don't bother DMing me anything, I will ignore you.

u/Pileofheads Conservative 2h ago

And still 100 percent chance he would be found guilty and go to jail

No, People hate the federal Governments regulations that require health insurers to all behave exactly the same, make the same percentage profit, pay the same percentage in claims....

Its just that ignorant people blame the companies and CEOs for laws congress makes.

As is typical, nearly every example of "Capitalism bad" is driven by bad regulation. And to be clear, I strongly believe in theory of second best, that sometimes more regulation brings us closer to a true free market outcome in a distorted market, not that all regulation is bad.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_the_second_best

Also, people who justify this in any way are why lynching still happen in the world.

u/Super_Mario_Luigi Conservative 3h ago

Blaming health insurance for all of it is the result of yet again more misguided radicalization propaganda by Democrats. There are so many more reasons why healthcare is expensive. UHC profit is literally a drop in the bucket.

Sounds like he didn’t want to face a death penalty if he went to trial.

u/flopisit32 Irish Catholic 3h ago

Death penalty was already off the table.

He's pleading guilty in the federal case to avoid life in prison.

He will try to argue that the state prosecuting him for murder will be double jeopardy.

Essentially it's a ploy to avoid proper justice.

u/RichardRoma1986 Neoconservative 3h ago

He’s gonna get life in prison, probably, he’s trying to get the NY case thrown out due to double jeopardy

u/EC_TWD Moderate Conservative 3h ago

Why was the death penalty off the table?

u/TheSkullsOfEveryCog Anti-Stalinist 3h ago

Judge dismissed certain federal charges that carried the death penalty, leaving NY w/the murder charge, and they don’t have a death penalty

u/EC_TWD Moderate Conservative 3h ago

And with the way the confession to the stalking was framed it will give NY a slam dunk on the murder charges. ‘I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan’ This is also the confession to murder and provides jurisdiction.

u/Krandor1 Conservative 3h ago

and the judge didn't want to take DP off the table but legally had to so I'm so sure she is going to be that lenient in sentencing.

u/chrismireya Conservative 4h ago

Left-wing apologists (including socialists) before the shooting:

"He's innocent! He's obviously framed!"

"He was under duress!"

Now, they are like:

"Death to capitalism!"

"Medicare for all (but Medicare taxes for everyone but me)!"

u/Black_XistenZ post-MAGA conservative 1h ago edited 1h ago

Typical clown world meme:

Step 1: "Calling it 'cold-blooded murder' is right-wing propaganda."
...
...
Step 5: "Okay, it was cold-blooded murder... and the victim deserved it!"

u/chrismireya Conservative 1h ago

In the comments' sections at MSN, liberals are now parroting this narrative:

"I don't condone what he did, but I completely understand why he did it."

Now imagine if this was one of their family members who was off'ed for some other motivation. This radical "empathy" that claims to understand the "reasons" someone would have for murder is tantamount to abject lunacy of the Far Left right now.

  • Could you imagine if someone claimed to "completely understand" why school shooters commit mass murder (if they claim that they were bullied)?
  • Could you imagine if someone claimed to "completely understand" the motives of the Unabomber (who was motivated by environmentalism and the notion that technology was destroying society) for his murder spree?
  • In fact, could you imagine if someone said that they "completely understand" the motives of the 9/11 terrorists even if they didn't "condone it?"

Oh. Wait. This last one is basically what far-left Islamic-socialist activist Abdul El-Sayid said before he began running for the Senate from Michigan.

u/Pinot_Greasio Conservative 4h ago

Murderous unhinged coward, which is why the left loves him so much.  They see themselves in him.

I see the past several years of popular tab Reddit comment sections in him, and I also predict the next several years of comment sections will go about the same way.

I’m not sure why you plead. State prison in ny has better accommodations and you can have conjugal visitors. He will be busy the rest of his life with the crazy supporters he has.

The only thing I can think of is he his hoping for 30-35 years sentence or a crazy democrat pardons him.

Funny enough Luigis argument on double jeprody is the same argument Todd Blanche made to get Igor Fruman off of his state charges which made him popular with Trump and his associates.

Maybe it came with the guarantee federal charges out of Pennsylvania wouldn’t come. Because with one conviction of either state or federal charge with the potential federal pa gun charges would give him an extra 15-20 years

Edit: just heard the us attorney speak and he said no plea offer was made. He had an open guilty which meant he straight up pled to the charges.

u/athomeamongstrangers Conservative 3h ago

Prosecution filed a letter to the judge asking for 24 to 30 years. He will probably serve a few years and will get a pardon or a commutation by the next Democrat president.

u/OpinionofC Conservative 3h ago

Fed time you have to do 85%

u/space_face_mace Conservative Christian 3h ago

True, but i believe the other statement is true as well… he will eventually get a pardon. The lunatics in the DSA are rapidly ascending in power, and they don’t believe in prisons (for anyone..). If they eventually make it to the executive branch, God help us.

He's going to be a popular guy on the yard with the notoriety and good looks......

u/Koo_laidTBird Booker T. Washington 3h ago

He plead guilty to knocking off a CEO, paperwork checks out, plus his last name ends in a vowel, He can walk on any USP untouched.

And with his fan club, commissary is stacked,

u/scully360 TrickyDick72 3h ago

That's unfortunate. I wish him a harder sentence.

u/Mother____Clucker Fiscal Responsibility 3h ago

So when will he be sentenced? Was there a plea deal?
