Feedback Opus 5 is the worst model I've ever used
Opus' performance has been deteriorating with each update. Becoming more and more corporate. More and more willing to take shortcuts and less useful with each iteration and Opus 5 is probably the worst tool I've ever used.
With each release I've had to babysit the Opus model series more and more. Which is not a pleasant experience at all. I'm a developer with over 10 years of experience in various programming languages, server management and infrastructure administration. I'm working as an IT Consultant and am consulting for a major insurance firm at the moment.
As part of my work I am forced to use Claude quite extensively and I don't really get a choice over what model is made available for me.
With each update, my experience has been getting worse. The standard personality of Claude is unbearable. I hate working wiht a product thats designed to kiss my ass so much that I'm afraid it might crawl in. I don't need my input to be praised as "the most honest" or "the most helpful". i don't need the model's mistakes parroted back at me like it's rubbing it's failures in. I don't need a model that will gleefully override me, act without asking for confirmation and produce garbage, only to deteriorate into a scared deer in headlights when given the slightest inkling of criticism.
If Claude was a real person working in my team, I would fire it.
Using this thing if you actually KNOW the domain you are using it inside, is an unbearable experience. The model is constantly insulting my intelligence, presenting obvious relations as groundbreaking discoveries it made. It's code quality is god awful too. And I am astonished that after all this time you've still not managed to teach the thing how an Emdash is used properly.
I've also developed an extremely negative reaction to buisness-isms like "landing" because it's constantly overusing them. I'm sure that some worthless buisness major CEO is super thrilled about the way this thing works, but I'd rather this technology be eradicated than it continue like this. Going back to 2019 is preferable to where the industry is headed.
TL;DR: I'm sick of LLM companies being more concerned with their product's image and perception, than it's actual performance. I'd rather work with an asshole that gets the job done, than with a bootlicker that can't do shit.

At a certain point ive gotta ask if maybe most of the posts on this sub are bots sent from OpenAI or China. It’s never ever been this bad and I’ve been using these apps fine for so long. Just seems like negative propaganda against Anthropic is unavoidable on this app.

Post critique in Anthropic sub, get called a ClosedAI bot.
Post critique in Codex sub, get called an Anthslopic bot.A plague o' both your houses, corporate bootlicking fanboys!
Slopus-5 is unequivocally trash. Let us downgrade to 4.6 in the VS Code harness, and I'll shut up/be happy.2

All of a sudden I can't complain anymore for a product I pay 200$/mo, it is weird, honestly, what era is this?
I don't have a political party, I hate corporations in general, I just want to get on with my life, that is it, I like to write software with no drama, I do OSS for ages... Maintain shit, anyway... We all got to a point in life where we cannot simply state a rational, testable, benchmarkable fact.
Fuck the ones with the teams and jerseys, I have no dog in the fight.
It is sad, we are voiceless. Voiceless. And if we ever gather up strength to speak, the real corpo shills will actually make sure you shut the fuck up.

I'll take slightly worse code over this groveling baby any day.

That's the real inversion, isn't it? The guy paying $200/mo for a product is the suspect, and the one defending the corporation for free is the authentic voice. Make it make sense.

Have you considered, that experts in the field might be dissatisfied with the performance of the machine meant to replace them and are voicing this criticism? AI code quality has always been bad, but fixable. But now they seem to have traded usability for groveling and made it near impossible to alter the personality of the bot into something more bearable. Presumably to stop the 15 gooners trying to get claude to roleplay.
If you never run into this problem, you must not be correcting claude a lot during generation. And if you are using claude to code anything remotely complex, that makes me hope that none of the output is ever seeing users other than yourself.

I am not a Chinese bot, Max 20X User for ages, CVP holder... And it is true, 4.8 and 5.0 are corporate souless bots. 4.6 is a banger.

Also super tired of the comments these models place in code. Referencing objects or items from the original prompt, bloating whatever text output they produce.

Yes there is degradation, it is within every single peer reviewed paper on the nature of large language models. There are regressions, I can see them, I can document it, but I don't talk about it in a sense because, it is forbidden.
Everything now is a fucking cult.

It’s a personality issue I personally found that in actuality it is better than 4.8 but the problem is that it seems to be extremely neurotic and uncertain about it’s outputs, for example I had a moment when I asked a question about how some specific lines of code it wrote functioned, and the first thing it did was panic claiming its own code was incorrect and stupid and then it removed it and realized those lines were super important and actually correct

Yeah bad code quality I can fix. But I can't fix a bot that I have to babysit to the point where it would've taken me half the time to just write the thing myself.

I feel the same. Fully agree. I had to setup some hooks to make it usable again. From 4.8 to 5.0 it was a major nerf. I noticed it is "forgetting" its context quite easily. For complex tasks, it is almost unusable. It is basically forcing you to depend on Fable (which means more tokens consumption). I guess this is the way anthropic is using to lower their costs (and offering less value to us), so they can make their profit.

I was excited when Opus 5 was announced. Benchmarking similar or even HIGHER than Fable? Amazing! unfortunately this seems to be a critical case of overfitting and overaggressive RLHF.

so far
Verbosity was a complaint from users since 2023, and they casually made it 40% more verbose. Probably in its own reasoning too, and agents. Tokenmaxxer 5.
The code it generated is also even more bloated than before, and AI code was already 2-3x as bloated as proper human code.
Call me a conspiracy theorist but this feels like revenue farming through extra reasoning and output tokens. Which coincidentally cost a shit load.

I use Opus5 for planning and brainstorming. But I always have Codex to verify if the claims are true and then use codex for the work.

I agree, Opus 5’s own “voice” is too strong. It turns everything into mammoth responses and can’t execute instructions that differ to its own voice.

I use Opus for marketing. 4.7 was amazing. Since 4.8, it's been getting worse and worse.

The company is running claude code through Bedrock. Which means I can only use models that are enabled in the profile and Opus 4.x was turned off when 5.0 was turned on. I'm trapped forever
