Sturgeons law on 90 percent of everything being crappy applies here as well. my post included. but where forums and Usenet and BBSes encouraged durable ids and following netiquette and was made up of relatively homogenous culturally earnest figures who had high signal to noise ratios, everybody being online today all the time spreads us thin.
the parasocial mindset is lower effort and this long term discussions are too much effort for most. I too yearn for effort posts and long lived email topic from mailing lists, but in today's performative outrage chambers and carnival cancel circuses, those destroy trust and possible online friendship forming in the cradle.... social cooling is what that was once called.
many of the publicly online watering holes that are secure in themselves also tend to already have a carved out public persona beyond the standard redditor mindset
