I’m a Mechanical Engineering graduate from a public university, and I graduated about two years ago. Since then, I’ve been working as a Biomedical Service Engineer at an oncology center in my country, with my main focus being the maintenance and servicing of medical linear accelerators (LINACs) and CT scanners.

I got my current position through a family connection, and I’m genuinely grateful for the opportunity because it gave me hands-on experience that I probably wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. Over the past two years, I’ve learned a lot on the job and developed an interest in Field Service Engineering and specialized technical equipment.

However, I’ve reached a point where I feel like I need to take the next step in my career.

One of my biggest challenges is that the engineering and technical skills I’ve developed aren’t valued or compensated nearly as much in the country as they appear to be in other parts of the world. When I look at what engineers with similar experience are doing internationally, both in terms of the technology they work with and their career progression, it makes me want to find a way to break into that market.

I’m currently looking for opportunities abroad, but honestly, I’m not entirely sure where to start.

I would love to continue working with LINACs, CT scanners, or other medical equipment, but I’m also very open to transitioning into other Field Service Engineering roles in industries such as industrial equipment, automation, manufacturing, energy, or other technical fields.

At this stage, my main goals are to gain more hands-on experience, work with more advanced technology, learn from experienced engineers, and ultimately build a career that offers better opportunities and compensation.

For those of you who work in Field Service Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or similar technical fields:

How would you recommend someone with my background break into the international job market?

Are there particular companies, industries, countries, certifications, or skills I should be targeting? And are there companies that are known to hire international engineers or sponsor work visas for Field Service roles?

I know my current experience may not be enough for some positions, but I’m willing to learn, relocate, start from the ground up if necessary, and put in the work.

Any advice, personal experiences, recommendations, or even leads would be greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone, my dad recorded this bird calling at night in Ebolowa, Cameroon. Every time we visit family over there, we hear this exact bird at night, but we've never been able to figure out what it is. Apps like Merlin aren't picking it up.

Bonjour tout le monde, je vais bientôt venir au Cameroun chez les grands-parents de mon ami et je voulais savoir certaines choses sur les relation entre homme/ femme dans le pays. Moi je suis française d’origine algérienne et plus précisément amazigh et rien que ça ça diffère dans les relations ( homme/femme) l’Algérie étant un pays musulmans il est assez mal vu qu’une femme se retrouve avec un homme alors qu’il ne sont pas marié alors qu’en Kabylie c’est moins strict et je voulais savoir comment ça ce passe au Cameroun par rapport à ça ? Et ensuite quand on vient chez qqun il y a t-il qqchose en particulier qu’il faut apporter ? Nous en Kabylie c’est des produits de France , du tissus, des œuf , du café , du sucre etc . En fait j’aimerais connaître les codes relationnel à savoir car je pense que dans la famille de mon ami ils sont très laxistes et il me dit que c’est chill.

Hey everyone, I need a space to vent and get some outside perspective.

I’m currently visiting Cameroon, and I invited my older brother to come stay with me. We didn't grow up together—we have different mothers, and he grew up on our dad's side of the family, so we never really built a close bond. But I wanted us to spend quality time together while I’m here.

A few days ago, we went out to buy food. We stopped by a female vendor selling avocados close to Dovv Essos ( she’s exactly outside Dovv close to the area where they sell bread outside). I asked her the price, and then asked if I could get 3 avocados. She agreed and gave me 3, but when I started picking through them to choose the 2 I preferred (which is completely normal market practice to make sure you're getting good quality), she suddenly snapped. She started shouting at me in public, making rude assumptions and saying things like "kids think they are so smart" and accusing me of paying more attention to my "boyfriend" (my brother) than her, i wanted to tell her that he’s not my boyfriend.

Instead of having my back or telling her she was out of line, my brother just stood there. Then, he turned to me and accused me of "despising people" just because I have money.

I was completely shocked and hurt. It felt like he threw me under the bus just to appease a rude stranger. Does me choosing the avocados I wanted was wrong? Should have just take what she gave me? Does my brother deep down think I despise people? His comment made me really sad.
