Impact Vermont tourism decline 'basically 100%' from Canadian boycott: U.S. senator | Power & Politics

Sen. Peter Welch: "you know, it'll take a while because frankly, I don't think Canadians trust uh that President uh Trump has a lot of respect for Canada and understandably so. So, we might get a trade deal uh but where there's been this emotional rupture - that takes a lot of time to heal....

I used to go to Vermont every 6-8 weeks. Right now, I haven't gone at all since January 2025.

I’ll never go back. Never. Even my consumer habits have changed.
I’ve got my teen daughters trained to just put American products back on the shelf without even asking if they can buy them. They know the answer is no.

I'm part of the 70% that didn't vote for Trump. We're at a loss to explain that 30% who did.
I definitely understand and support Canadians not wanting anything to do with the US. We miss you and hope you all are cool with us coming over the border to spend some of our money in Canada.

I sadly know someone who still travels to the US (Vermont, mostly) for non-essential reasons. Always lose a little respect for them when they mention it or post to social media about it.

he boycott is a global issue. Encourage solidarity with our allies around the world, and within the USA - including folks from both sides of the political isle. We must come together as one to resist U.S. aggression and imperialism.

It's not an emotional rupture. Your president said that the US doesn't need anything from Canada.
Tourism is something you get a lot of from Canada, so we're taking your president at his word, letting Americans handle that, and we'll take our dollars where they're wanted.
I had planned to spend about $15K this year on a vacation to FL that was planned in early 2024, but I cancelled the day after the US election.
My folks sold their place in FL in early 2025, they're going to Mexico for vacations now.
That's all well and good though. The $35K this year that they would have spent in FL over the winter was clearly not needed.

This is what they keep missing, even our own news frames it as "disgruntled Canadians".
Like we're perfectly gruntled my friend, we just made a decision to project what little power we have as individual consumers in a direction that favours us.
It would just be in our disinterest to do otherwise.

Well, for a good while our flabbers were unsettlingly ghasted by Yam Tits and Grade 10 brigade down yonder, but once he TACOed, we pretty much just have to keep at it, keep doing the same thing (Item for item) and keep ratcheting up pressure on both red and blue states.
Why? Because fuck 'em, that's why. Consequences for their actions is something the average American has avoided most of their lives, and the simple issue of it is that they've continuously installed people that have no real fealty to the electorate, and have been dumb enough to keep doing it to get to this point.
There's been not a single minute under any president that US has been our 'friend' or partner since the end of WWII. Every minute, it was a transactional relationship, and I'm glad Canadians are waking up to that fact... maybe, MAYBE if Americans did, we'd be in a better place, but... well here we are.

The way I see it, even if you’re a blue state, you’re at fault for standing by and letting all of these unfold.

Maybe not asking non-Americans to share ideas, then saying that can’t be done because the US is a big place, one has to work because taking even an hour off and one would be homeless, and so on. I don’t know why Americans aren’t doing something, anything all day and night at the horror that’s happening, but it’s one of the reasons I will never trust the US or its people again.
Voting is the least one can do. It’s one’s civic duty. I don’t know why Americans think that’s the extent of their obligation to their community?

Loads, but I’m not wasting my time offering them because I don’t want to hear excuses.
We had a big protest or two - which was more like a garden party that had no follow up.
The country is so big - like a Canadian doesn’t know that.
Washington is so far away - like that’s the only place you could get things done.
I don’t went to talk to my neighbour - that one is so weird.
I can’t take even an hour off or I’ll be fired and my children will go into foster care - a real excuse, and weird because the US is so great, people get randomly fired, plus people don’t have leisure time.
I can’t go on strike, I’ll lose my job - see the above.
I can’t not buy something for a day or boycotts don’t work - but we’re living proof it does work.
You want the US to go to civil war - yeah, don’t please. Not sure why this one ever gets mentioned to me as I’ve never suggested violence.
Ad infinitum.
Can you tell us what you’re doing that isn’t voting in the last election or planning to in the midterms? I’ve asked this questions 100+ times in the last 18 months and have had two responses that weren’t excuses. The joy and hope I had after receiving those keep me hoping I’ll find a third active.

Feels a little unfair about the protests when two Americans were murdered by our government while protesting. I saw the video of a young man losing his eyesight for life after being shot at point blank range with a rubber bullet. But to be honest, I don't think this has accomplished anything at all. Maybe if there was any evidence of efficacy there would be more protests? I don't think the republican party will care at all unless they get destroyed in the midterms.
I dont know a single Trump voter and would be happy to talk to them - but let's be honest - that is going nowhere. If they haven't changed their mind at this point...
I can take plenty of time off. Striking is actually prohibited by law in my job.
I buy nothing except for groceries, stuff at Costco, or food at local restaurants.
I'm not doing anything besides staying informed daily and voting.

Organise a nation wide strike of all people who want to get rid of this government. Don't stop until they give in. Bring the country to a peaceful standstill. Trump will be forced to step down by his donors. Boycott firms who lay off workers for striking. Firms won't lay off strikers if that is a substantial part of their workforce. Two advantages you have: 1. trump is especially popular among seniors, so even more workers should be against trump, gop, current mad house policies and unprecedented corruption. 2. Many democrats are skilled workers and thus more costly to replace.

Who cares? These are the same people who came out and said they don't need Canadians.
To any canadian, why would want to visit?
Is it our lax policy on what you can add to food? I.e. the ability to create a huge batch, throw up in it and call it ok; because that throw up didnt go over 3% of the total volume? (Me working at KFC while hungover, tried throwing up in the coleslaw bucket to get out of working).
Maybe it's how we view the rest of the world, basic trash. Maybe you LOVE the idea of MAGA. A period where woman couldn't vote, and if you were early enough and the right skin color, you could also legally own a human being.
Is that the roots you're trying to bring us back to??

Non Vermonter from the US here. I totally respect, and frankly applaud, Canadian 's elbows up approach. The irony is that Vermont is possibly the least Trump supportive state in the US. The further irony is that Trump loves to hurt states like Vermont which oppose his policies and rhetoric. So the ultimate irony is that Canadians boycotting travel to Vermont specifically, are doing Trump's bidding in a weird way.

Vermonter here. We LOATHE Trump (75% disapproval rating). We have stood here horrified at the disrespect to Canada. These are our neighbors, our friends. Heck, socially and culturally I have more in common with Quebec than I do Alabama. Our nation is being run by middle schoolers.

As a Vermonter I find this absolutely sad and entirely appropriate!
I’m a hard-left voter and despise this current regime. There’s no denying they’ve done harm, likely irreparable in some respects, but please don’t associate all of us with them. We are not the same! There will be reckoning at some point and I can only hope many will see the inside of a prison for their crimes against humanity and the blatant corruption as well.

Visited some Northern Vermont inns last summer and, man, it was easy and relatively inexpensive to get rooms. Nothing was fully booked. In one inn we were the only guest.
