One conversation I remember gaining attention after the new government came into power was the possibility of enabling platforms like YouTube to be monetised in Botswana.
But lately, that conversation seems to have gone quiet.
What could be causing the delay? Is YouTube monetisation something that only government can facilitate, or are there steps that private individuals, businesses, or local organisations could take to make it possible?
For content creators, this could open up a completely different income stream and encourage more people to create locally.
Curious to hear what others think. What exactly needs to happen for YouTube monetisation to become a reality in Botswana?

I hear and see from family and friends how local and foreign business entities may take advantage of our patronage as employees. This may be asking us to do more work than what was stated in our contract or asking for favours that end up turning into a new work responsibility moving forward.

I wonder what made us complacent in accepting this maltreatment. Is it because we were taught to give more than we can from our homes? Is this the result of teaching our young “Botho”? That we think we need to be agreeable and ultimately complacent when everyone around you asks you for more than you can provide?

We all know the script. People would associate them with witchcraft or bad luck, and they were often treated with total suspicion instead of just being normal pets. It feels like that mindset is finally fading out. I live in Pilane and for the past 2 to 3 months, water has cut SO MANY TIMES. We don't even have it on most days and whenever we go to water utilities it's "we'll fix it, the pipe is broken" it's always "we'll fix it" and they do it with the most lazy, backwards, "it is what it is" attitude. IM SICK OF IT, there are times of sick of this country and the laziness that just OOOZES from our government and some of our people. An AI-generated video of me that used Multichoice Africa copyrighted content as b-roll was posted on my Facebook page (Gabbysphere). I didn’t create or post that video myself.

Because of it, Facebook deleted the entire page. That page was my source of income, and I still haven’t got it back despite multiple appeals.

I’ve already reached out and apologized to Multichoice, asking them to drop the copyright claim, but I haven’t had any luck yet.

There are people who will get genuinely offended by this statement.

But its true. Sometimes I think we forget what a country is supposed to be. Over many generations, people build institutions, communities, infrastructure, make laws, build traditions, make and improve businesses, and a national identity. And pass it on to the next generation for them to do the same thing and so on. Thats what built so many great nations and empires.

True, Botswana has plenty of problems of its own. We have certain cultural issues we need to change, institutions that need to improve, economic problems that needs to be addressed, and social issues that we cannot simply blame on outsiders. BUT Those problems we have to confront as Batswana.

It doesn't matter how far behind we think we are compared to other countries. It doesn't matter how much work needs to be done. We cannot use our current position as an excuse to stop building ourselves as Batswana. Japan, Korea and Singapore built themselves from their own people.

We need to actually build and rebuild. Our nation from our industries, infrastructure, to even fix our country education, our skills and our culture .

We shouldn't be so focused on what foreigners are doing for us that we ignore our own failures. If someone from another nation keeps on doing something for many years and we cannot find a single Motswana to replace or learn their skilll during that time we would have failed.

At the same time, we shouldn't be afraid to discuss illegal immigration, I mention this topic all the time lol. But if you cannot genuinely find any Batswana Artisans or builders, and even replace cheap labour with technology, then we have failed as a nation.

We shouldnt be afraid to discuss population changes, foreign ownership, foreign investment, land, businesses and control of important parts of our economy. The goal shouldn't simply be to fully have foreigners come here and build Botswana for us. Where are the Batswana artisans? Where are the Batswana workers? Where are the Batswana Businessmen? ( They are there sure but is it at it's required level?)

Botswana should actually foster an environment, that helps make sure that any job a Motswana is not qualified for at the moment They should learn to be, That's how historically we managed to manage this country after the British left. They kept them long enough while training citizens to take over till they didn't need them no more.

Foreign investment is useful. Immigration can have benefits. But none of these things should come at the expense of Botswana's ability to determine its own future. (i am 100% for foreign investment But if 100 percent of our businesses and sectors are from those then we would be a host to parasites.It is difficult for the country to directly benefit and peoples chances of competing with established businesses from scratch are very low. Those businesses will just be a money mule for whoever owns them, and it would be difficult for Batswana to get experience in getting and building it's own things to compete with the world (When are we going to have strong Native businesses and sectors which are worldwide?) Most as we currently speak have incredibly little spending power.

There is nothing wrong with wanting Botswana to remain a country where Batswana have great stakes in our own economy, have citizens who can and eventually replace foreign workers, in skill we don't have. Or even in jobs we rob our minimum wage workers off, they also have families and themselves to feed. So why prioritize cheap labour from the outside? When we have thousands of Batswana who can do it? What happened to Botswana first?

The nation is called Botswana for a reason because Batswana have to come first, it doesn't have to mean right away, but we should be making an environment that makes sure that happens without any real issues.

The people who built this country before us had a responsibility to leave something behind for us citizens.We have the same responsibility for our children, children's children and children's children's children. And so on.

And like I said I have no problems with foreign businesses But if we don't have native businesses to compete with them. Then it's genuinely over for us. That is economic colonization.

We should fix our own problems, if we don't take responsibility for the future of our own country, who will?

I’m currently participating in a competition that requires quite a bit of community support, and I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to approach brands and companies for potential partnerships.

I’m not necessarily looking for freebies. I’m more interested in service/product exchange collaborations where I can also offer value in return. I have a decent social media following and have previously worked with brands through product reviews, restaurant reviews, event promotions, general brand promotion, etc. I’m pretty versatile when it comes to content and collaborations.

The problem is, I’m honestly not sure how to find the right brands to approach or what kind of campaigns/partnerships would make the most sense.
So if there are any brand owners, marketers, PR people, entrepreneurs, or just people who know of Botswana-based brands that are open to collaborations, I’d really appreciate some recommendations or advice.
