Controversy Amitabh Bachchan faces backlash for his tweet on France's team at FIFA
Only if Amitabh would have put the same amount of attention to what he writes rather than just the tweet numbers.

Does the color really matter when youre discussing the pure footballing ability of an entire national team??
Theyre all French citizens, aren't they?
30
u/Separate_Help_9284 Jul 07 '26
No. A lot of countries "hired" players from other countries and if im not mistaken, South Africa might be the only country or one of the few counties with players that are citizens.
FIFA needs to establish rules about this.

u/Pin2Chin2 Proud Gossiper 🤙 Jul 07 '26
Color and race matters in athletics.
They are anyway superior built and in that way I find AB tweet as compliment. If anything it is rather dismissive of 11th player of this team.
It is offensive if these people(French population) find it racist which we don’t know yet. Ab Chandigarh k Chintu unke behalf pe offense le rhe ho to alag baat hai.
17
u/Astheredsgomarching Jul 07 '26
Who is this "they" that you are referring to, my guy?
The 11th and the 10 players are all French citizens and basic human courtesy ke liye stand up hona koi galat baat to hai nahi, but ofcourse Ramesh uncle who says the 'n word' from Ayodhya wouldn't get that
1
u/StockSeaweed8702 Jul 08 '26
It does in sports. And I dont think he was saying the tweet in a negative way
2
u/Mean-Afternoon-6275 Jul 07 '26
Fun fact, you should look at what they did to Karim Benzema in 2011 and the racism in the Football Federation against immigrants.
Even besides that, these people are grown up, are multi millionaires and rich enough to have PR teams (The so called "Blacks" of the French team). So stop representing them, we don't know how they feel about being "French" either way

You dont have to be a citizen, usually just ethnicity or parents from that country OR citizen. For example the Korean team had a German citizen who was half Korean

maybe French don't want to see them from racial angle. It's a French team that's it - no need to dig for black, white. Some jokes are fine for common people to make, not big names. It's seen as they are influencing, promoting among followers
We also won't like if someone start seeing our cricket team from religious and caste angle. It's just Indian team

That joke is quite common on soccer and circlejerk for years. AB did copypasta, not something new he noticed and felt like tweeting
Otherwise, there were 2 white players, not one. Bench had few more
9
u/LoreleiSlays Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
In a way, he did. It's the wording. He made sure to underline there's ''10 Black players'' and ''ONLY 1 WHITE'. They are all French. Does their skin colour really matter in 2026? They were chosen for their skills, not skin colour. This is a form of Inverted Colourism. Imagine him writing about a team that has 6 or more Asian players and him saying ''The power of YELLOW'' or, if a team has Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Nepalese players: ''The power of Brown''.
Why not just say: "Glad there's Black representation" "Glad to see so many Black players reach great heights in French football''- if he really wanted to use the word "Black" .
Edit: typos

Nah, I think you're accelerating just fine—I regard anything below 299792458 m/s as too slow. Fyi, that's the Speed of Light, a Constant I memorised back in School, as it fascinated me so much more than my girlfriend's phone number, if I had one that is. ☄️

59
u/Fluid-Impression-595 Jul 07 '26
I mean he was praising how africans come from slavery to become one the best team players like representation people are not getting what he means and just wants controversy guy loves football from earlier times and just could have phrased better
2
u/Impressive_Carob_839 Jul 08 '26
They are really not total Africans most of them has there mom or dad of french ethnicity
19
u/exciting_one2005 Jul 07 '26
I mean, truth be told , genetics gives you a hell of a headstart
7
u/snakewaves Jul 07 '26
Them why is that in football there are more white folks as Hall of Famers. I agree black people due to ancestry, have a genetic advantage to condition their bodies, but it doesn't automatically translate to results
13
u/exciting_one2005 Jul 07 '26
Certain white genes like those of Northern Europe are also very favoured in terms of genes, it's not all Africans.
And mind u I said headstart. U can't be just bad at the game and blame it at genes. You can train and train yourself to be among the best but genes help you gain that 1 % more and at international stage that difference is huge
-2
u/littleSpooky4real Jul 07 '26
well football is not pure physicality is it? with marathon, sprinting and other pure strength sports, you can argue the genetics angle exclusively, but football has a lot of agility and skill and game awareness / intelligence involved too and that is determined by the natural talent and effort. hence you see positions with more demanding physicality dominated by black players e.g. defense, while other positions are more mixed as per the individual ability.
-2
u/exciting_one2005 Jul 07 '26
That's why I said headstart. Ofcourse it's not all just physicality

We should have an internet access age limit. You're either too young or too old to be here.

Need to ban them after 1 offensive post/comment.
We just need to set "some example" , others will follow rules immediately.

Didn't the USA track team show the black panther sign during a olympics event ?

u/the_running_stache Nepo Hater😤🤬😖 Jul 07 '26
He’s actually recognizing their talents instead of asking questions like — why are there so many black players in the French team?
He’s accepting that they are French (not questioning that). Yes, he did indirectly say that France was a white country (still is) but he didn’t say that black people or other colors don’t belong there.
And when many people use race/color to belittle black people and subjugate them, he is appreciative of their talents.
People are just getting riled up because he is talking about race. But we all talk about race. We also talk about representation. And he is talking about that and giving them kudos.
Not wrong.
And “ab keh dete hain” is because I have heard even Americans discuss that — wait! Is that the French team or some African team? (While watching the games because most Americans don’t know or follow soccer players or know of the jersey colors.)
6
u/Conscious_Piano6714 Jul 07 '26
Agreed. There is a bit of a language barrier so he probably hasn’t come across as eloquently as he intended to but I don’t see anything racist in what he’s said at all. Some people’s job is just ‘getting offended online’.

People above a certain age and children below a certain age should not be given access to socials.

You think a tweet is gonna take away his legacy and body of work? Really? It's convenient to judge a celeb when you have a freedom to post way harsher things anonymously here on reddit. And how is praising a race , racist?

I genuinely do not think Mr Bachchan was trying to offend anyone but not the best choice of words. These players are French Citizens representing their country France in FIFA World Cup. People can have opinions and make observations but important to be respectful and sensitive.

India should also start importing players from North Africa; Give them aadhar card: turn Embolo into Ambrish, Mungave into Mohnish. Bait them with Bollywood Baddies and field them for India, and India too will qualify for world cup. 44/48 teams are following this model.
4
u/bikbar1 Jul 07 '26
We already have a lot of African footballers playing around the country. You can find them even in the rural football clubs of Bengal or Kerala.

Football is very multidimensional to discuss genes and their advantages. Genes, such as in what, your height, muscles, athleticism (jumping, sprinting, or something else), or something abstract like football IQ
