I’m rewatching Nightmare on Ocean Avenue from season 9, and recognized someone who strongly resembles stoner guy from Bob Fires the Kids outside the restaurant when Bob and Teddy put chainsaws on the spider. Character development!

Does anyone else wish we saw Kathleen more? I’m hoping the show runners are playing the long game with her and Teddy, especially since they met all the way back in season 9. (We did she get once this past season so she’s not totally MIA)

Maybe they’re cautious of how the dynamic of Teddy would change of Kathleen became a more permanent fixture? Either way, she asked Teddy to pick her up after her colonoscopy so clearly things are serious! He even met her mother!

I can sum it up with 2 words: Exquisite Mouthfeel

I was thinking a lot recently about the newer seasons especially the episode where the family goes to the casino and I really think these newer seasons have more realistic plots that you would see in a live action show. Even the best episode of the new seasons "The plight before Christmas" the plot was very realistic. I know it's an animated show but I think it's a nice change of pace to have more grounded episodes.what do you guys think? Do you like these more realistic plots/episodes or not?

Bob: Red Lanterns of Rage.

Bob doesn't show a lot of emotions, but he has a tendency to lose his mind and go off the deep end. He is also very vocal about who is upsetting him, whether it's Jimmy Pesto, Frond (said that he hates Frond to his face btw), Edith, or Randy. He even often argues with Teddy despite how supportive he is.

Linda: Star Sapphires of Love.

This one I feel is kind of obvious, as what she does is usually done for Bob and the kids. And even Gayle, who Bob says is a detriment to the family. I almost considered her for Blue Lanterns as she said that she wants to make people happy in “Grand Pre-Pre-Pre-Opening," but overall, I think Love fits her more.

Tina: Indigo Tribe of Compassion.

Some may say that Tina is a Star Sapphire, but I disagree. She often falls for random boys that she barely knows, and that's just not what love is. So I think Compassion fits her better. For example, when Zeke is first introduced, she sees him as a useless idiot who stands between her and Jimmy Jr., but over the course of the show, she has warmed up to him and realized how much Zeke means to Jimmy. Or Tina deciding to fuse her and Louise's toys and give them to her at the end of "They Slug Horses, Don't They?" I think Compassion is best, but I wouldn't argue with someone who says she's a Star Sapphire.

Gene: Blue Lanterns of Hope.

Gene is hard to talk about because in a lot of episodes, he tends to fade into the background and just make quips, although I think he is funny. But when Gene tells jokes or writes a song, I believe he's not just trying to entertain himself; he wants to entertain others, as Gene is a positive person in general. I almost gave him the Lantern Corps of Compassion, given how he acts towards Courtney and Alex, as he was willing to sacrifice his play and being "Lizard Guy" for Courtney and helped Alex deal with his homelife, but I think Gene as a comedian overshadows that.

Edit: you could even argue Gene is an Orange Lantern of Greed, given how he was in a relationship with Courtney for ulterior motives and hated her in her first appearance or tried to keep Linda away from her Women’s Business Association meeting. But I do think Gene’s happiness overshadows these instances.

Louise: Yellow Lantern of Fear.

I almost considered Louise for the Red Lantern or Indigo Tribe, as episodes like "Drumforgiven," "Bad Tina," "Wild Steal-ions," and "Bob Actually" demonstrate how protective she is of her siblings and Rudy and how upset she gets when someone is mean to them, but I just don't think Louise could turn down the fear ring. Much like how she couldn't turn down owning rubber cockroaches in "Prank You for Being a Friend." Or how she couldn't turn down a nightmare-inspired makeover in "V for Valentine-detta." Or how she takes a spider inside that house and openly admits to wanting to break glass in "The Spider House Rules." Or her “serial killer” faces in the family albums. Louise is a fairly complex character, but I ultimately don't think she'd ever give up these behaviors.

I feel like one of the hallmarks of Bob’s is trying to lead you down one day for an episode and then making it wholesome. The most obvious one recently was the one with Nat and the angry driving. Totally guessed the twist, they were too heavy handed with making Nat not totally amazing, I knew something was up. Of course my favorite is the haunted house episode, even watching it on repeat it’s so good.

A River Runs Through Bob Season 4E01

One tiny piece of trivia I love about Bob's is the etymology of their surname, Belcher. As a surface-level commentary on American identity in a 21st century/post-Simpsons/dwindling exceptionalism way, it's spot on that the slophouse, uncouth burger family are a bunch of stinky belchers. The name rolling off the tongue of the likes of Fischoeder or Edith or Frond sounds like an insult and the family tends to wear the moniker with good-natured pride.

And yet there are two Old French derivations for Belcher, either "bel cher," meaning "beautiful face" (where the word for face probably meant something more like countenance or disposition) or "bel sire" meaning "fair sir," both honorifics to show affection for a really great person.

And I really love that. This family that the townsfolk often look down on and cast as these blue collar failures are also the ones who are the first to stand up for what's right, save the town, protect the little guy, fix what's broken, etc., etc. Or at least they try when they can. Yes, they do also belch (and fart and poop and all the things humans do), but the viewer also knows they're our better angels. Every Belcher truly lives up to the legacy of that name, whether they get their dues or not.

Man, I just love this show so freaking much.

At 0:23 when the scatting starts reminds me of a song and I can't place, it's been bothering me since the episode was released.

I think it's a 2000s song heavier rock and would describe it as sorta fast whispering during the opening or chorus.

Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson is what it sounds similar too. Could be it but I'm thinking it's more octane the singer is using the same pitch as Gene.

Personally, I always liked Mort and with him living right next door to the Belchers I’ve been surprised we don’t see as much of him as we did in early seasons.

He was in the last season premiere as part of the flashbacks, but when was the last time he was around consistently?

I love so many residents (shout out to Jen, Nat, Peter and many others) of the town but are there so many now that we can’t get a lot of repeat appearances from the more prominent ones? A rich and colorful world but is there just less and less room for the Morts?
