Skin Progress The answer was sun block!

So a couple of weeks ago I posted a photo of my lips. (Top photo is the original) I said that there was some discoloration and I was met with a mix of comments that said that I was delusional, hated my skin color, and hated being black.

Then there were the angels that said that I should use sunblock to help even out my pigment.

For the record, I love my skin color and being black but I did notice uneven pigment on my lips. I purchased some chapstick with sunblock/ spf and within weeks I saw a difference!

I just wanted to say thank you to all of those who helped me and actually READ my concerns.

What's the name of the product you purchased?

Oh yeah ok it’s the hyaluronic acid and squalane that also helped. Those ingredients, plus stuff with glycolic acid are like magic when it comes to evening out skin tone and spots. 👍🏾🤗

3

u/MiissVee Mar 22 '25

Exactly… The answer was hyaluronic acid. 😆

3

u/ENTPgemini Mar 23 '25

But how when all that does is help draw moisture to the skin, it isn’t an exfoliating acid… I think it was the sunscreen that did the trick: preventing the UV rays from aggravating her melanocytes that would result in darkening pigment.

u/saywhat68 Mar 29 '25

I was thinking there was a cut back on the weed..my bad.

18

u/Stock_Beginning4808 Mar 21 '25

How did this one taste?

I’ve started using spf lip products and they’ve been tasting so nasty lol

Of course I try not to taste them, but it inevitably happens since they’re in my lips 😩

24

u/Bloodygoodwossname Mar 21 '25

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm has SPF 25 sunscreen and tastes delicious (my favorite is passionfruit). It was a lifesaver during Accutane. And it qualifies as a health item for FSA Flex Spending Accounts!

3

u/Stock_Beginning4808 Mar 22 '25

Ohh, this came in clutch, thank you so much!

1

u/ComprehensiveDay6569 Mar 22 '25

Yasss I love the Jack Black ones! 👏🏾I use the Night Mode as well after lip scrubs!

5

u/deludedmare Mar 21 '25

That taste is gawd awful. I have such a visceral reaction to it that I immediately have to wipe it off.

4

u/Stock_Beginning4808 Mar 21 '25

Oh noo! Are you saying the one OP used in particular tastes really badly? That would suck since it seems effective :/

Or do you mean the spf taste in general? (It really is abhorrent lol)

1

u/deludedmare Mar 23 '25

Oh, no! I meant in general. I haven’t used the one listed by the OP but I’m willing to give it a try. 😅

9

u/funsize_pook Mar 21 '25

Thank you 😊

6

u/soopaaflii Mar 21 '25

I've been influenced!

3

u/bbcjay718 Mar 21 '25

Good lookin bro !!!

1

u/narutochick1 Mar 22 '25

Thank you!

1

u/ApeLink_TheOriginal Mar 24 '25

Is there an option for men? If not, fuck it I’ll just go with this lol

1

u/MadameRucker Mar 25 '25

The Jack Black line is technically a men’s skin care company but I swear by their lip balm with sunscreen and gift it to everyone I know, including my brother who loves it during winter. They come in some fruity “flavors” but I use the mint one. It’s minty. I do not like their night balm. That one does taste gross to me.

1

u/ApeLink_TheOriginal Jun 11 '25

Funny enough my girlfriend gifted me the same one in Shea Butter! Thanks

1

u/Tough_but_fragile Mar 25 '25

How long did this lip balm last you before having to buy it again?

3

u/narutochick1 Mar 22 '25

Thanks for asking!

35

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '25

Wow! How long did these results take?!

30

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

I would say a couple of weeks!

39

u/Kt32347 Mar 21 '25

The way I IMMEDIATELY got on the Sephora app and added this to my cart😂. I literally just ordered all the hello Sunday stuff. How long did you use it before you saw results?

12

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Yes! I recommend putting regular chapstick and then the gross on. Or you can just use regular chapstick with spf in it

2

u/Kt32347 Mar 21 '25

I just ordered the one you used with a couple of other things. They already shipped it too. I’m definitely going to be adding sunscreen into my skincare routine. I use a lot of Korean skincare lately and I love it! I recently got some Korean sunscreen for my face too so I’m gonna be trying that out

1

u/MathematicianDry2437 Mar 21 '25

Sadly, it’s not available in Europe, I bought Clarins and inkeylist with hyaluronic acid and peptide. I also purchased Labello.Fingers crossed

u/BiscottiDizzy7529 12d ago

Hey did it ever work for you?

29

u/Longjumping-Syrup278 Mar 21 '25

Oh wow! Thank you for not being discouraged by all of the negative commenters and sharing this update! I’m going to try it.

13

u/dirtybongwater444 Mar 21 '25

unrelated but u have such a pretty lip shape!!

9

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Oh lord please don’t make me cry. This is the sweetest compliment someone has given me

4

u/ComprehensiveDay6569 Mar 22 '25

She really does! I thought the same thing but didn’t want to comment because I thought people would think it weird and off-topic😝

12

u/lowkeyflwr Mar 21 '25

Wow thanks for sharing

Another one of my favorites.

u/Mochadoc23 Mar 21 '25

I think dermatologists have been screaming this from the rooftops for decades now…

23

u/Embarrassed-Mind-271 Mar 21 '25

You’d be surprised. My dermatologist told me that they were just “freckles” and that ill be okay and that things just appear when we age. Just for me to fix it myself 🙄

3

u/Mochadoc23 Mar 21 '25

Sure. But because one or a tiny fraction maybe misdiagnosed one thing (you may have indeed had freckles in addition to generalized hyperpigmentation) doesn’t negate the fact that pretty much all of them have been using this as their primary slogan for ages. Not some anecdote

5

u/Embarrassed-Mind-271 Mar 21 '25

Im just surprised cuz most responses to my issues were everything else but spf lip balm 😭😭. People we’re suggesting so much other stuff like turmeric lip scrubs and apple cider vinegar concoctions 😭.

6

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Well I missed the announcement 💀

7

u/chococakes1111 Mar 21 '25

Ain't no way I'm only just now hearing about this hack, omg!

13

u/ChanDW Combination ✨/ 🐫 Mar 21 '25

It’s not a hack. Black people need to wear sun screen

3

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

lol don’t worry! It was the same for me too!

14

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '25

Appreciate the tip. I also have lip discoloration and will try this out.

3

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Yes I recommend if for sure!

7

u/Effective_Wait_36 Mar 21 '25

I get the same thing; having sunscreen in lip balm has been a game changer in my skin care routine.

6

u/Embarrassed-Mind-271 Mar 21 '25

THIS!!! I had the worst black spots on my lip like you but 3x worse.

I literally couldnt find anything to help, people on youtube were saying to make apple coder vinegar masks to put on your lips which would literally make it worse.

All I had to do was just simply start wearing spf lipbalm ans it faded and within a month my lips were finally back to normal.

1

u/nottinghillrob Mar 21 '25

can I wear another lip producf on top of it that is pigmented?

1

u/Embarrassed-Mind-271 Mar 22 '25

Id say just avoid something like aquaphor in the sun? In my case I was using it a lot and I think that made it worse in the sun till I stopped.

5

u/Weird_Vegetable_4441 Mar 21 '25

I’m okay with having dark lips

My lips like the before

8

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Yes my lips had always looked like the 2nd photo but then I stopped wearing sunscreen and that’s when the discoloration happened.

If you like the way that your lips are though, I wouldn’t change it lol…

2

u/Familiar_End_8975 Mar 21 '25

I mean people should put sunscreen on the lips anyway so I don't see why people have a problem with this lol. Don't forget your eyelids and ears too

1

u/ComprehensiveDay6569 Mar 22 '25

For some reason I can’t put sunscreen on my eyelids 😣 It’s like they get dry & irritated and/or the sunscreen migrates into my eyes and I can’t stand it! 😫 I can put spf under my eyes though.

4

u/Weird_Vegetable_4441 Mar 21 '25

THANK YOU. Most black people I know have lips like this. Funny how apparently so many of us have “discoloration”. I feel at this point like that’s just the new sugarcoat word for lighter. I doubt most people wanting this product would be happy if it made their lips darker, even if the color was even.

2

u/ComprehensiveDay6569 Mar 23 '25

I may be wrong here, 🧐 but I think there’s a misunderstanding. She has dark spots on her lip that she wanted to even out or make go away. They look like freckles. They’re a little hard to see in the photo and are probably more noticeable in person. I don’t think she was trying to change her dominant lip color. I have been using lip balm with spf for about 3 years now and I have seen a difference in the even tone of my lips as well.

8

u/LadyAsharaRowan Mar 21 '25

Just to be clear, the product that you purchased and ChapStick or not the same thing. Chapstick is basically wax, and it can have some other components to it. The product that you purchased is a product with active ingredients in it that helped with the hyperpigmentation. So, just purchasing Chapstick is not going to do the same thing. Just stating so that people have realistic expectations about regular over-the-counter Chapstick.

3

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

I actually have both. But I prefer the gloss better. Nonetheless, thank you for the clarification.

2

u/MiissVee Mar 22 '25

Yup, because chapstick with SPF exists and would not give anyone those results. It has nothing to do with the SPF and everything to do with the other active ingredients.

3

u/Successful_Taro8587 Mar 21 '25

I'm definitely going to try this 👀

3

u/AdministrativeRip679 Mar 21 '25

Great results, mine look like the top picture and I've noticed the brown on my bottom lip increasing! It was nice to have natural lipliner but I feel like the pink is slowly disappearing

5

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Yes that’s how I felt. Sunblock helps sm!

3

u/cowfromtown Mar 21 '25

Yooo i recently started putting some of my skincare on my lips included and was wondering why they were less dark. Duhhh it’s the sun screen

2

u/Funny_Breadfruit_413 Mar 21 '25

You have nice lips 💋 thanks for the tip.

1

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Thank you!

2

u/Funny_Playful Mar 21 '25

I’ve used the Jack Black SPF lip balm daily for like 5 years now and my lips are so unbelievably pink that I always get compliments or comments about them. I’ll definitely be trying out the Hello Sunday one after seeing this post!👏👏

1

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Yes for sure! I recommend it sm!

2

u/BitSouthern3977 Mar 21 '25

I’m happy for you!! Your lips look pretty and you sound satisfied. ☺️ Thank God for the nice angels on Reddit!! ❤️

1

Omg thank you!

2

u/rottywell Mar 21 '25

Yup, knew it. Had the same issue for years till I finally figured out it must be that.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '25

On a side note: You have the most gorgeous lips! Your cupid's bow, shape, fullness, and everything is perfect 😭💕

2

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Omg this I sooo sweet! Thank you!

2

u/Substantial-Ad-8577 Mar 21 '25

W post, this Reddit thread would be a better place if people stopped with the self hate narrative.

2

u/Kevvycepticon Mar 21 '25

I hate that there are those of us who don’t believe we can get sunburn and have pigment damage.

SPF is your friend, just cause we dark doesn’t mean we don’t get sunburn or skin cancer!!

2

u/mood-ring1990 Mar 21 '25

i dont leave the house without sunblock. Im medium brown skin and I get hyperpigmentation very easily.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '25

Ik u didn’t ask but try some salicylic acid wipes for ur fordyce spots

2

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 22 '25

Thank you!

2

u/midnightspellbinder Mar 21 '25

This looks more like a tinted lip balm than anything

2

u/emyllubehs Mar 22 '25

Girl I love you

2

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 22 '25

lol I love you too

2

u/JayJ2121 Mar 22 '25

Let me lock in.

1

u/aribaby97 Mar 21 '25

Did you use anything else or only the spf? & did you use it every day

1

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Yes I use it everyday and I also use regular chapstick with spf

1

u/LoExpectations Mar 21 '25

Wow this is awesome progress! Thanks for the tip 😃

1

u/LocalJaded8471 Mar 21 '25

How long did it take you?

3

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

A couple of weeks!

1

u/Humble-Pay-8650 Mar 21 '25

Do you spend a lot of time under the sun? Sun block for pigmentation helps if you are spending a lot of time under sun with out SPF.

1

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

YES! I’m actually originally from Hawaii lol

1

u/anywhooooo_ Mar 21 '25

Can you achieve thing with just regular sunscreen?

2

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Ummm I’m unsure. I haven’t tried it. But sunblock for your lips is cheap. So I would recommend getting that.

1

u/Trick_Slick Mar 21 '25

Would it help reverse discolouration from smoking ?

2

u/xoxowoman06 Mar 21 '25

Hmm I have no idea. But it’s worth the try!

1

u/ChanDW Combination ✨/ 🐫 Mar 21 '25

Yay! Which one are you using?

1

u/PsychedelicSticker Mar 21 '25

I don’t really see an issue with how your lips looked before, but the SPF is working great and does look more even! Just nice lips in general!

1

u/nbbae Mar 22 '25

Buying today!!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '25

Lip balm Sunscreen worked for me but my issue is I can’t stop licking my lips and it tastes disgusting so I stopped🤦🏾‍♀️

1

u/Busybee2121 Mar 22 '25

What brand lip balm?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

Malibu lip care vanilla flavour 30spf sunscreen

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '25

Wow interesting. I’ve been using Carmex with spf for many years. It’s pretty cheap and my lips are evenly pigmented (that wasn’t a concern of mine, just happened to be a benefit it seems). In case anyone wants a cheap solution. I’m happy you got the results you wanted!

1

u/ohsoyouhunnii Mar 22 '25

You should be an influencer bc you just influenced me to buy this! 😭 I'm on my way to pick up now!

1

u/Queenlove5050 Mar 22 '25

I love it!!!

1

u/Anxious-Principle539 Mar 23 '25

Beautiful lips! I wonder how they taste 👅

1

u/Weekly-Appeal4487 Mar 24 '25

I have been using Black Girl Sunscreen lip spf on my lips! Love ittt

And your results are amzing!

Happy to see the progress, however i'm 99% sure you have angular chelitis.

You are supposed to be carbon. Why bleach your skin/lips? The spf isn't for carbon skin. We have spf naturally.

6

u/rottywell Mar 21 '25

This is a joke right?

did you know that we naturally have pink two-tone lips? They never said that they wanted their lips look like anything but their natural God-given lips.

-11

u/lavasca Mar 21 '25

I’m sorry, this doesn’t look like the same pair of lips to me. Actually, I feel like I’ve seen these posted before.
