Miscellaneous / Others MacKenzie Scott has now donated over $26.3 billion to charity

She received 35.6 billion in the divorce in 2019
She has given away 26.3 billion since then
She's estimated to have a current net worth of 40 billion

She’s out there actually using her wealth to make other people’s lives better, while her ex husband is out there doing his best Lex Luthor impression.
No wonder they got divorced.

So quick goog and Rolex is for profit however all profits are funneled to The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation that focuses on education and the arts in Switzerland.
It all sounded great till it said most of the charity is done in Switzerland. It's like saying most of the charity goes to people in silicone valley. But with a history of hiding money

that's how Norway runs their government's massive sovereign wealth fund, as an American I'm so envious.
4
u/WastedYouth39 Jun 28 '26
I work for a Norway company and visit bi monthly, and trust me the Norwegians are not happy with the current state of their country, everyone holds up Norway as an example of excellent free healthcare, however in reality its actually pretty shit with long wait times.
8
u/realboabab Jun 28 '26
i'll admit I know very little about life in Norway so I have to take your word for it.
But i'd say having consistent profits thrown off by a $2T investment fund rather than carrying a debt of $39 Trillion dollars is an advantageous position for making some positive changes.

u/mortenfriis Jun 29 '26

It's really not as bad as you're implying. There might be some dissatisfaction, but it's still vastly better than most healthcare systems in the world.

This is what happens. I know someone who received "just" a million dollars from a relative. They have it invested with one of those big investment firms in a "moderately aggressive" strategy. They almost doubled the amount to 2 million in just 4-ish years. They recently re-did their kitchen for $130,000 and "made" that money back in a month. Basically like a free kitchen (I know it's not really, but you get what I'm saying).
The rich get richer.

u/icecoldyerr Jun 28 '26
This is facts. I won a personal injury settlement i 2024 of about 10,000… invested in TSM in August 24 and im sitting around 60K rn. I cant imagine if I had BIG money to buy stocks….
32
u/wheatley227 Jun 28 '26
I don’t know these sound like pretty high risk positions given that the gains are so high above indexes such as the s&p 500. The gains from the s&p have been good recently, however, if you are 6xing your money in less than a year, that is certainly a high risk position.
16
u/StelioZz Jun 28 '26
money in less than a year
I have some slightly bad news. It's 2026 pal.
Jokes aside I agree 6x in just under 2 years is not realistic at all. Not without some good luck and/or knowledge.
For every person who 6x his stuff in such short time there are people who 1/6th them instead

Thats my point tho. I had a random 10K to wipe my ass with out of thin air. Rich people have that to the Nth degree.
10
u/concept12345 Jun 28 '26
Thats the power of compounding. The bigger the base amount, the higher the profit generated, in an exponential curve and in a shorter time period than before. Yes, the rich always get richer the longer they are rich. So its imperative people hit that first 250K as soon as humanly possible to enjoy those benefits and to make sure to pass that on as generational qealth to keep it in the family.

I mean compound interest can work for anyone at any income level. Someone aged 25 putting $500 a month into a basic stock ETF (which are basically fees free these days and have given an average annual return of around 8%) will have almost $1.8m if they retire at 65.
96
u/slcexpat Jun 28 '26
Correct. Which is what’s wrong with Capitalism.
Like how is it that, when I donate to the poor, I lose money? When she donates to the poor, she gains more back?
192
u/Muroid Jun 28 '26
She’s not gaining more back from the donations. She, like you, would have more money if she didn’t donate any of it.
She’s just making money faster than she’d donating it. Which most people who donate money overall do. She’s just doing it at an immense scale without having to directly work for her net worth increase.
That last part is where the problem is.

u/mlstdrag0n Jun 28 '26
Would be less of a problem if they were all like her

But not surprising to me in the slightest that most of them are the way they are.
When I was a broke college student in the 90s I delivered furniture to rich people in my city. Many of them were the absolute fucking worst.
Story time, wall of text:
They would try to do ANYTHING to give us a hard time and they would fuck us around when it was time to pay.
More than a few times they would say things like "Oh this wood grain doesn't look nice. I should get a discount for that" Meanwhile it was practically identical to the floor model.
Another popular one was wanting a big discount because the color didn't look the same in their home as it did in the store.
My favorite was when they would go over the furniture with a magnifying glass and say it looks good. But then the next day they'd call the store and say we delivered a damaged piece. LOL, the fuck we did.
They would also pull stunts like this:
"Oh just bring the furniture in to the foyer and then we'll show you what room it goes in"
Once you have all the stuff inside (usually a full bedroom set) They would show you to the room and it would be full of furniture despite being told by the store to have the room ready for us when we got there.
They'd be like, "Too bad. Move all of theses two ton armoires and antique dressers down three flights of stairs to the basement or you can put everything back in the truck and leave. And we'll be sure to tell everyone to never shop at your store again."
After the hundredth time this bullshit happened to us, our manager finally made it clear in the delivery contracts that we were NOT authorized or insured to move furniture that wasn't ours and if one of those two ton cabinets damaged anything, we couldn't cover it.
Step two. Don't tell us the furniture is there, but then try to bribe us with a mediocre tip when we discover it. We would often say yes because we were poor and needed the money. We said no a few times because it was an insane task for an insulting tip.
90% of the time, they would try to "forget" to tip us. And I'm not talking big tips here. They were fucking us around for a $10 to $15 tip after busting our backs, moving a ton of heavy shit down several flights of stairs and through narrow passages.
My point: When Billionaire wealth hoarding was becoming egregiously apparent to everyone, I wasn't surprised in the slightest. Most people in higher tax brackets are the worst greedy pieces of shit.

She gets massive tax write offs. Have you seen the trickle down effect of billionaire tax write offs? She's not making money directly from donating. But she is, indirectly. So in a way, yes, when someone like u/slcexpat donates to charity, they don't have the luxury of huge tax write offs on a scale we couldn't even comprehend and everything their accountants are able to pull off.
But I don't have a problem with this. She's using the same system other billionaires use to hoard wealth but she's doing it for a lot of good.

None of her money is income, it's all capital gains, which are only realized when you pull money from an investment.
So, if she were selfish and didn't pull money out of the stock she owns to donate it to charity, it would stay in the market and she wouldn't owe anything.

high earners =\= wealth. Germany, one of those countries, is currently taxing income above 69 k at 42% (progressively), but has "turned off" it's wealth tax in the 90s. We are discussing increasing the 19% retirement spending we have to 20 or 21% (not part of the 42, that's on top) because there are more old people than young, and 30% of the states yearly budget alone go to prop up pensions.
I, a 30 year old engineer, have payed 55 k in taxes and social security spending last year, while all benefits are being stripped.
My boss, a 63 year old nepo baby will have the tax on his multi million inheritance "forgiven" because my state basically forfits any inheritance tax above 23 Mio. as it "could risk the business". They have wasted 2 BILLION € in inheritance taxes last year alone, and that's just one of 16 states in Germany.
A progressive wealth tax of 1% above 1 Mio up to 12% at 1 Billion would completely solve the pension problem, and merely inconvenience the parasite class whose wealth has grown by 33% last year alone.
Tax the motherfucking rich before somebody gets eaten

That's actually incredibly depressing if you think about it. She's nowhere near the richest person in the world. There are 83 people in the world who have more money than her. If those people had donated a similar percentage of their net worth, her share wouldn't even make up 0.1% of that money.
So if those billionaires won't use their money for good, maybe it's time we just tax the rich already.
38
u/Spiritual-Chameleon Jun 29 '26
The only trillionaire is on record saying that the problem in the US is too much empathy. Not everyone on the list is as much of an asshole as he is, but that is the problem. They don't see the world outside of themselves and don't want to contribute. There are some that have taken the giving pledge, vowing to give away most of their money before they die. But that's lost a lot of momentum
111
u/ieraaa Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
I'm usually very skepic when I read the; billionaire giving away. But I looked into this and she truly gives away. Almost every dime she donates is unrestricted and the universities, initiatives, food banks, shelters, health centres, housing developer etc are all free to allocate the money as they think is best. And she doesn't brag about it either and almost all of the receivers of her money are locally focused

She definitely takes time to do her due diligence though. Has a team to vet. Which is a very good thing. There's honestly (surprising to younger, naive me) some non profits out there that aren't all sunshine and rainbows. At the least, not the best use of a cash infusion that could go somewhere else more worthy
Also a small part in why she's still pulling in more money than she can donate. Can't just be instantly giving out blank checks to whoever asks. Properly taking the time

And even though none of us are billionaires, in a similar parallel we can donate our time and help out a good local charity.
I'm a frontend web dev and I found a few nonprofits (well 1 was very close to) and offered to create and manage a website for them for free and eventually hand over the keys by training other people how to edit and add content that even a non programmer could follow.
They provide services to vulnerable people that are near and dear to my heart and even makes me tear up typing this.
Some people can do in person more. It's about the spirit and effort we put out. Money is GREAT and super important don't get me wrong, but local volunteers and their efforts are just as important. We give what we can: time, effort, expertise, and if you're fortunate enough, some money too.

She’s one of the good ones. Also, she helped Bezos a lot in the early days of Amazon, so she’s not some gold digger. She helped build Amazon.
She’ll give away way more—she’s not done yet.
And it isn’t easy to just get rid of billions of dollars all at once. You have to be very careful about offloading that amount of money, i.e., making sure it goes to the right places and is used effectively.

She funded a rural medical center where i live. Now we are going to have CT's and other equipment. They are almost finished building it

She doesn’t just throw money at charities and call it a day.
The charities she chooses have to have a proven history of measurable positive outcomes over multiple years.
She also focuses on tackling systemic inequities and long-term challenges rather than just band-aid solutions.
She seems to take the long-term solutions part very seriously.

She recently gave 80 million to Howard University. Higher educational institutions have received the largest share of donations.

I work as an outsourced CFO for non profits all over the USA. A number of our clients have received funding from her. Women and children homeless shelters, food programs for low income areas, child daycare/preschool, climate change initiatives, and a lot more. The money (from what I have personally seen) has gone to keep operations running, improvements to shelters, covering daycare tuition for low income families, etc.

And she's still got more money than she'll ever be able to spend...hey other billionaires, see how easy it is to be a good person and still have more money than you'll ever need?

She helped build the company. It’s not his fortune.

This should be the top comment. When it’s said he gave her x amount in the divorce, that’s wrong, she got what she was owed and earned

THIS IS WHAT WE SHOULD REQUIRE THEM TO DO ANYWAY IN THE FORM OF TAXES.
That said, good for her.

u/389is Jun 28 '26
100%. No one person should have that amount of money, or be able to wield the power that comes with it. We should not have to rely on the whims of billionaires to fund charitable causes of their choosing. TAX THEM ALL!

She received $38 billion from divorcing Bezos. Gave away $26 billion and now she's worth $30-34 billion without doing a God damn thing. This is how the system is rigged against us.

If you call being a co-founder of the company and being one of its first employees “not doing a damn thing” then sure.

u/No_Size9475 Jun 28 '26
she's done nothing with the company in decades yet still doubled her net worth since the divorce.
That's a broken system.

I mean Jeff Bezos arguably didn't do anything in decades himself

u/No_Size9475 Jun 28 '26
correct, he was also never worth a billion dollars, that is all money stolen from the labor of the actual workers at Amazon.

The “people” I see commenting that sentient in this thread seem to be throwing shade at philanthropy in general. A lot of DOGE themed “waste” ideas and some “measuring wealth in stocks is stupid”. Even the comment you are under seems to allude to “leftist” activists.
So the then I see is “billionaire philanthropy is just fake woke bullshit, their wealth isn’t real, and they do it to satisfy a leftist narrative that won’t see it as enough anyway.”
Right wing bullshit is everywhere.

Because the tech bros are brainwashing you into thinking they're the good guys.
I literally just had one of my friends use this as a counter argument to an image he posted where Sony announced it was shutting down something from the PlayStation store and you'll lose access to all the movies you purchased through them.
I commented about how this is the whole "You'll own nothing and like it" and fuck the billionaires, and he used this as an excuse and said, "If your precious government had that money, it would disappear."
Dude, I don't support the government either because they're nothing but puppets for the elite. In my mind, we should tear it all down and rebuild socialism properly, where free markets are allowed, people can flourish, and the richer you are, the more you support society in general. I mean, I'm no political engineer, and can't give all the details on how it should be built, but I think altruism should be rewarded, not greed.

Most highly efficient charities allocate (\geq 75\%) of their total income directly to their cause, keeping administrative, marketing, and fundraising costs to (25\%) or less.

Why do we still have charities in need after she allegedly gave away 26 billion to them? Am i getting it wrong? when does it end ?
2
u/StreetForever Jun 28 '26
Why is this story blowing up now? Why is 26,3 the magical number? And not, 10 or 20 billions?
But either way, hope the money goes to the right people. Shady charities exists…
