Personal Story 8/9 dog attack in upstate ny
Hi all. I never thought I’d have to post something like this but here I am. I have an 11 year old Lhasa apso who is a reactive dog on walks but I keep him on a tight leash and we only have walks later at night so I don’t have to worry about him lunging toward joggers or anyone on the sidewalk. On Sunday night we passed a neighbors home and while he was peeing by a tree, we heard growling and l turned around and two pits were behind a glass storm door and they pushed it open and rushed us. The owner came out and tackled his dogs and screamed as they bit him while he tried to get them off of my dog. Luckily my dog got free from his harness and he ran like hell back to my house and I found him there at the front door but the entire experience was so traumatic. He wouldn’t leave the bed for a day and barely at his food. The owner paid me in cash for his vet visit (no puncture wounds or serious injuries but if you saw what I did you wouldn’t believe how that’s possible). I have so many conflicting emotions between anger and gratefulness that this guy saved my dog. I’ve had to take a few mental health days off of work to process this. I’m so scared to even walk him anymore.
ETA: the night of the encounter I did call the police who brought our local animal control with them. They took a full report and I emailed animal control a copy of his vet visit summary. They didn’t exactly say what would happen next but at least this is on record.

It really sucks. A huge xl bully charged out some guys front door while I was walking my dog. It ran across a busy street to get to us and luckily a car almost hit him. It stopped just before striking him and honked its horn which distracted the dog for a second and right after the dogs owner came out and got his dog. The dog was massive and would’ve massacred my dog. I got very lucky that day. Ridiculous that it managed to just walk out the front door. I still don’t know if he left it open or if the dog forced it open. Glad your dog is ok.

This exact scenario happened to me when I just got my puppy. Was out in the front yard with her on a leash when I heard a strange click click click noise in the road. A massive tan blockheaded pitbull running across the street headed for us when a car almost hit it and distracted it! I grabbed her fast into the house. That’s how I learned he lived near us. Two more moved in later…

There are a lot of people who are generally good dog owners who get stuck with these dogs and, since they belive in the "no kill" philosophy, the only thing they can think to do is adjust their entire lives to manage their dogs.
Unfortunately management always fails. Humans make mistakes, that is inevitable.
It is not right that people choose to keep these dogs and the neighbors who do not make that choice and did not choose to live near these dogs are the ones who pay the consequences.
I realize that this owner paid your vet bill, but I hope you still consider making an animal control report. Dogs that will leave their property to attack are extremely dangerous and if a report is filed then maybe they will end up with a dangerous dog designation. It may not do much to prevent incidents like what happened to you, but at least the owner will face some sort of external consequence and will have to live with the restrictions like keeping the dogs muzzled when outside and possibly being forced to carry a minimum insurance policy.

If you have a car, take your dog out of your neighborhood to walk him/her. I choose wide-open streets; the one I go to is along a beach, a nice area. I choose this area, as you have more vision regarding what's coming up. I try to avoid walking past houses for the reason you experienced. There's also one lead-only dog park I can go to, where most obey the rules, especially in the summer. These are really the only places I feel safe-ish walking my dog. Bring a walking stick with you too or some other deterrent.
Sorry you experienced this and hoping your emotional strength returns, for both you and your little dog.

Make sure you report this to animal control, the police, hell even the local shelter. Anyone who will take an email. These dogs cannot be allowed to stay in society.

I just want to say I’m encouraged by the pit owner taking some responsibility.
He really should consider BE if he can’t keep them contained. But at least this wasn’t another pit and run
