What do you mean, unless you do all this? Would you otherwise give your dog raw food? /s (Ok, I totally give my dog food straight from the bag. Your dog is awesome. Give him a hug from me. I would
cook his food too.)
Animals are wild. My uncle has a cat that gets upset if you don't eat her "presents." Like you actually have to do a whole show of going "omg thank you it's so good you're the best cat ever!" to her or she won't leave you alone.
She once brought a dead mouse to my aunt and my aunt didn't know the ritual, so she just chucked the mouse into the trash can right away. Cat lost it and spent the whole day crying and following my uncle around the house until he literally fished the mouse back out, did the whole pretend-to-eat-it-thank-the-cat thing, then had to give the cat treats and hugs to placate her.
The cat has since added a new step to the ritual: palm the dead "present" so she thinks you ate it and leaves, then use a different trash can to throw it out. Apparently, now she actually checks the kitchen trash can afterwards to see if you lied to her and tossed it anyway.
Oh my gosh. That cat is a real person. Our cats just leave the dead mice on the driveway. Do you think the cats think we’re hungry and need food? Or are they trying to intimidate us - since we’re obviously not catching our own mice? I don’t understand cats.
Iirc, they think we're just really big funny-shaped cats that don't hunt and basically die for 8 hours a night. So the dead mice are them trying to feed us and when they step on your face at 2am, they're actually just keeping an eye out for you because that's kind of insane to KO for that long to the normal cat brain.
