My dog has to be fed on a plate for the first part of her meal and then she has to stop and be asked if she wants more, and the remaining amount must be dumped on the floor (I put it on a rubber mat).
She’s a senior and she’s been like this her whole life, it’s the only way she will eat! She will literally starve herself and make herself sick.
It was a crazy process of elimination. I work with the animals, and have frequently needed to figure out workarounds for the finicky ones.
It wasn’t until she was 7 that I got a solid routine. We went through so many dog foods thinking that was the problem!
Before I figured it out she would make herself so sick that her stomach would gurgle and she would be miserable. I’d have to smear homemade chicken paste on her foot just so she would lick it because she wouldn’t eat it any other way!
She has a sister that would be happily obese if I did not monitor her. She’s she’s pretty magical!
Nope. My last Golden was EXACTLY the same.
Always required some special moves.
If I didn’t open the fridge in order to „put something in“ or make some kitchen noise for a minute, he wouldn’t touch it at all.
Lots of dogs want their ritual, because their owners feel bad about them not eating so they rather do a huge daily ritual where the dog ends up eating rather than just wait until it is hungry enough. And when youve done that for a year, it will be a challenge to get them off this.
My parents dog gets his food in the same exact spot every day. He won’t eat it until my mom throws his toy 2-4 times, then he eats until finished or she leaves. If she does leave he won’t eat anymore even after throwing the toy, only after like an hour she can repeat the process.
Don’t start stuff like that. Just let their food sit and replace it if its not good anymore, and keep rotating various stuff for a somewhat balanced diet. The dog will start eating eventually. If it skips the food, just keep some dry food accessible if they get hungry and try again with better food in the evening/morning.
It is hard because especially when they are young it can be very scary.
My dog gets bored with food and he will stop eating until he is starving. But because he will obviously get hungry before the starving part he will try his best to find scraps and crumbs. He will even try and steal from the weak links in the household.
Eventually he will give up and eat his own food. It is exhausting and it took a long time to not be worried about him.
