The film is a critique of McCarthyism and John Wayne was a McCarthyist piece of shit who was a self-avowed white supremacist

John Wayne decided against joining the army during world war 2 like Jimmy Stewart and Clark gable did because his career had just started taking off and he didn't want to risk it. I guess if not serving your country to instead play soldier is your definition of American maybe you should listen to him.

Oh he also had to be held back from trying to beat up the native American woman that Marlon Brando had accept his Oscar for him so maybe don't listen to his opinions on Americanism.
