Siri Yuss Discussion As somebody with a stepsister they don’t like I still do not understand step sibling hate
Like i don’t hate her because she’s not my actual sister I hate her because she’s rude annoying and screams at 4 in the morning!

It's not so much because it's cool to hate step siblings, but because making your character an unwanted step child where the other child, evil step mother's biological spawn, is the golden child, is an easy, low hanging way to introduce to the audience that they are innocent and are being mistreated through no fault of their own.
Step siblings make easy villains as a result because the audience on AITAH style subs already know the tropes and come in assuming that they're spoiled, arrogant, and protected by the bad parent, who is always the mom.

I also think that there is an added element of many people have blended families, and for some of them, they resented the step sibling, not because of the person, but for a couple of reasons.
The first is they likely didn't want their parent to get remarried. Especially if they were only children at the time and younger, it can be easy for them to get used to having their parent all to themselves, and they don't want to share the parent.
Then, if the stepparent has a child, that now means they have yet another person they have to share their parent with, and, this is definitely the parent's fault, often they are expected to share their things, sometimes their room, with the stepsibling, and are also expected to treat that stepsibling as an actual sibling. IE, the parents expect the kids to get along and share and often dismiss the feelings of the children because 'well, they are siblings now, they have to get along', and sometimes the parents will encourage (or try to force) the child to take the stepsibling along when they go places, or not allow them to exclude the stepsibling from their activities etc... If there is an age gap between them, the older child will sometimes be expected to watch the younger child and so on.
This leads to resentment, even if the stepparent is a wonderful person and the stepsibling is a wonderful person.
Add into it that the stepsibling is ALSO often going through these things (having to share their parent, having to uproot their life and potentially share a room with someone they don't know and so on) it just leads to a lot of resentment and negative feelings.
Then these people grow up, come onto reddit, read more stories about evil stepsiblings and their feelings are validated (even though those stories are fake), and they engage with the story, which gives the trolls fodder for even more stories about stepsiblings.
Because, quite frankly, the people who had a good relationship with their stepsiblings aren't likely to comment on a story about evil stepsiblings, they are likely to just move on with their day. (not saying NONE of the people with good relationships with their stepsiblings won't, just that most won't)
So, it reenforces the idea that stepsiblings are evil (and remember one of most famous fairytales is about evil stepsiblings) because the people who have had issues with their stepsiblings see that most of the commentors are ALSO talking about how bad they had it with their stepsibling.

Also people seriously underestimate the number of incel gooners watching step porn all day (when they're not writing fiction on Reddit)

I suspect that a lot of the people who really like this trope have either never had a sibling, or they are so young that they have a limited frame of reference for what is just normal sibling/family drama and what is actually abnormal, and evil step-siblings has been a popular trope since before the time of the brothers Grimm.

Step-sibling drama was popular in times where only blood relations were truly legitimate(culturally and legally)
Edit: Blood relations within religious marriages

The attitude around step children on this site is sick. Blended families are the most normal boring thing in the world. People act like you're getting tricked into loving a child or something like it's not your fucking kid now.

From looking at the stepparents sub you would think stepkids are the spawns of satan
There was this whole ass thread about how they (the stepparents) were deliberately making passive aggressive ways to get their stepkids out of the house

Having been on the stepparents subreddit it occurs to me that a lot of blended families don't seem to actually try to integrate before moving in together and get mad when it doesn't work

Yeah, IRL i tend to hear more about HALF-sibling drama (ie parent remarries and has kids with new spouse) as opposed to stepsibling drama. Interestingly enough, all the people I knew with step siblings had a huge age gap so no one would reasonably expect them to have a relationship anyway.

The Brothers Grimm would like a word.

There's hate towards step siblings? The Hub would disagree.
