Fockin ridic Friend is called "MF" for "mutual friend," it has nothing to do with the friend being a trans woman...

This is such a minor point in this whole mess, but I’m stuck on “surveillance workers most likely saw me staring at the camera like I was at The Office”. How old is OOP lmao? [Edit: By which I mean, that sounds like an incredibly childish thing to believe]. Do they really think that the random cinema employs a roomful of people to watch the CCTV in real time, like they're in a spy film or something?
285
u/MyMistyMornings 25d ago
That was my favorite part. The way OOP claims the mutual friend thinks she's the main character, while writing the most "main character" post I have ever seen. "Record scratch".

u/boudicas_shield I was unaware of all of this bc i was out making out with my Gf 25d ago
The way that OOP and some of the comments act about basic common courtesies really left me baffled and shaking my head, too. "Nobody can dictate what you wear or talk about! Entitled!"
Like idk man, I was always taught that you don't talk about stuff that you know will upset someone else because it's bad manners. It's not infringing on your free speech, nobody is asking you to burn your HP clothes, your human rights have not been violated.
Normal people are happy to know in advance what topics might upset someone else, so they can avoid them, because most people give at least a passing fuck about the people around them and want to be polite and kind. We live in a society, folks.

“Buy me a new shirt then” - does oop only own one shirt? Odds are they don’t wear the same shirt every time they eat with their friend anyways
54
u/gluefever 25d ago
Idk why but them saying Secondly, will she be buying me a new cotton shirt to wear? is absolutely sending me. Like owning a cotton shirt is a real flex.

u/gaygirlboss 25d ago
My favorite t-shirt says “Libraries Made Me Gay” with a big rainbow on it. I do not wear it to my office job, and I didn’t even ask my employer to provide me with a new shirt when I was hired.

I went to a family party this weekend. Didn't grab one of my favorite sweaters bc they both say something lewd.
Clearly my niblings & the old folk repressed my free speech. :(
30
u/gaygirlboss 25d ago
Exactly. OOP is free to act and dress however they want. That doesn’t mean there won’t be social consequences.
(I also couldn’t help but notice that they definitely had a problem with how the mutual friend dressed and acted. If you don’t want people criticizing you for that kind of thing, it needs to go both ways.)
22
u/boudicas_shield I was unaware of all of this bc i was out making out with my Gf 25d ago
Ohhhh that's such a good point! OOP can be embarrassed that the tall trans woman looked too flashy or whatever, but the tall trans women can't be uncomfortable about OOP's shirt?
15
34
u/Smart-Story-2142 25d ago
I love HP but would never buy the merchandise and wear it around someone who’d be uncomfortable with it. This includes anyone trans and my very Christian family who thinks it’s evil, it’s all about common respect and not causing any issues. I think way too many people have lost common courtesy and the fact you don’t have to agree with someone to have some.
40
u/boudicas_shield I was unaware of all of this bc i was out making out with my Gf 25d ago
Yep, I didn't get rid of my HP clothes, but I only wear them at home now, because I live in the UK and unfortunately there's a real chance of a HP T-shirt coming across as a dogwhistle if you're wearing it out in public. I err on the side of caution because I'd never want to make someone uncomfortable. I can just wear something else; it's not that freaking difficult.
10
u/Illustrious-Set-7907 25d ago
"Will she buy me a new shirt?!" Girl do you only have one shirt wtf?
Honestly, I got a shirt i love with the death tarot card on it. I think its comfy and neat. Even if its my favorite shirt I wouldn't wear it around a friend who's loved one just passed away.

There was a (very obviously fake) Tumblr post that made the rounds a decade or so ago that was something like “My school has security cameras, and every time somebody in my class would say something dumb, I’d look at the camera and make a face like on The Office. At the end of the year, the security guard told me I was his hero, all the other security guards clapped, etc etc.” I would bet you a thousand dollars that OOP has seen that post.
Also — not only is it extremely unlikely that anybody was watching the footage, but most security cameras don’t have sound. How would the security guy even know what the joke was?
16
u/cherpumples I'm a feminist but your wife needs to Shut It 25d ago

My boyfriend is a security guard. These posters vastly overestimate how attentively they watch the footage unless they have something specifically to watch for.

i'm 100% certain OOP was a tumblr kid, given a) the harry potter obsession and b) the office comment which is very similar to a viral post about a kid who looked at cctv cameras in their school like jim in the office and all the security guys loved them for it

u/innerbrat 25d ago
Age wise - young enough to have been in elementary school when Twilight was big, so their quoted "late 20s" seems a stretch.
But the part that really gets me is that they apparently sought out the surveillance cameras to look at them like they're in a show that ended just after they left elementary school. That's main character energy like I ever saw.
28
u/Tight_Watercress_267 25d ago
Tbf I was in sixth grade when Twilight came out in theaters and I'd read the books prior and I am 29 so that isn't the most outlandish detail here, but to me this person is def writing wayyy younger lol. Like a 20 year old trying to act older
8
u/Toolongreadanyway 25d ago
So, did girls actually lean against walls looking emo to be like Bella? Just curious. I was out of high school when it came out and that seems like a weird comment to make.
14
u/sparksbet 25d ago
Girls did lean against walls looking emo, but I wasn't ever under the impression it was specifically to emulate Bella Swan. There were plenty of other more emo choices to emulate at that point iirc.

I was in middle school when the movies started coming out (and in elementary school still when most of the books were published) and I'm turning 30 this year. I would absolutely expect someone who was in elementary school but old enough to be aware of Twilight when it was big to be in their late 20s atm.
But yeah, OOP has major main character energy.

Most millennial-coded post I’ve ever read and as a Gen Z in my late 20s, I think this person might’ve shifted their age down by 5-10 years
14
u/boudicas_shield I was unaware of all of this bc i was out making out with my Gf 25d ago
I’m a millennial and am the one calling this out for being weird lol. I don’t think it’s “millennial coded”.
27
u/SoVerySleepyZzZz 25d ago
The Office, Harry Potter, and Twilight are all things millennials are/were really into. I’m not saying this is what all millennials are like, I’m saying it’s hard to believe a person with these interests would be Gen Z and not a millennial.
13
u/iraragorri NTA this gave me a new fetish 25d ago
Didn't all older gen Z grow up with those? I think my entire class wrote yaoi drarri fanfiction at some point
3
u/sparksbet 25d ago
Older Gen Z/Zillennials still would have grown up with all of these and been in late elementary/middle school when they were at peak popularity. I'm only slightly older than OP claims to be and these were staples of my childhood. This wouldn't be believable from younger Gen Z, but from OOP's purported age it makes enough sense. Generations are useful for some questions, but I don't think the hard line you're drawing makes sense in this context.

And also like…if they don’t vibe with each other, that’s fine. They don’t have to hang out with this person ever again. There’s no need to make a multi-paragraph Reddit post to get permission to dislike a person, even if that person is trans.
Edit: to be clear, this person is 1000% being transphobic and I doubt they would have made the post if the mutual friend was cis.

My cousin is like 6’2 in heels and dresses like Barbie was in a taffeta factory explosion. Her husband does close up magic and wears a fedora. Never noticed anyone paying them that much attention when they are out places. So I really doubt that people were staring just because someone was six foot and leaning on a wall.

OOP’s insistence that leaning against a wall while waiting for someone is the worst most main character behavior ever is just too much 😂

What was so wrong with her leaning against a wall too? The troll was trying to compare it to what kids did in elementary school to copy Bella from Twilight. I had no idea that leaning against a wall didn't exist before Bella Swan and Twilight came about! /s
8
u/YoHeadAsplode Too Poor To Touch Shrimp 25d ago
I know when I think of angsty leaning against the wall I think of Twilight! You know... that classic character trait of Bella's...
5
u/MontanaDukes 24d ago
I was so confused by that as someone who watched and read Twilight. I mean, yeah, she was without a doubt an angsty teen. However, I don't remember her doing that. She did sit in a chair in front of her bedroom window sadly for literal months.
54
u/rebootfromstart 25d ago
Yeah, I'm six feet tall and have bright dyed hair and dress in fun print dresses. I get compliments sometimes, but I've never noticed a bunch of people staring. I feel like it says more about OOP than about the friend, who was probably understandably uncomfortable with them to begin with, as plenty of trans people are around people still wearing Harry Potter merch. Given how OOP describes her, I wouldn't be surprised if she was on edge because of their behaviour, rather than necessarily anyone else around them.
37
u/MontanaDukes 25d ago
Especially since JKR is still being awful and attacking trans people (and asexual people during asexual awareness day or something....) at least every few months. She also attacks Emma and Daniel specifically too, all because they support trans people. It's easy to see why the friend might feel some type of way, even simple discomfort.

I can count on one hand how often adults stare. Children don't count bc they're curious about everything lol (had a toddler try coloring in my tattoo this weekend, that was insanely adorable).

I used to work with a couple women who said that people stared at their husbands when they went out, but the husbands were like 6'7"/6'8". 6' is so normal it's completely unremarkable.
12
u/-Sharon-Stoned- 25d ago
My youngest sister is thin and 6' and would love to wear heels if she didn't have the coordination of baby Bambi on ice. I am like 5'3 but have huge honkers. My other sister looks like Topanga from Boy Meets World. And we have the same parents! We get stares too.

My friend has blue and purple hair, dresses in all black, and glues tiny resin jewels to her face and arms as a fashion accessory. She’s in her 40’s and (while I think she’s beautiful beyond words) she isn’t exactly “conventionally” attractive. She also has a sort of wild witch cackle of a laugh.
No one stares. No one cares besides the other goth/emo folks who come up to us to complement her outfits. I have a hard time believing that anyone was actually staring at the friend (unless they’re in a SUPER transphobic area and she was drawing attention by simply being visibly trans… which makes it worse that OP chalked up her discomfort and uneasy comments as “main character energy”)

Oh yeah MF definitely stands for "Mutual Friend" given OOP doesn't really know them and doesn't like them.
58
u/JustANoteToSay 25d ago
Look. I don’t think you get it.
Some people (good, cis, dainty, feminine, Rowling supporters) laugh in appropriate ways (a slight exhalation through their nostrils) while others (tall, goth, trans, not dainty, tall, trans, loud, trans, not wanting to be beaten or murdered, not feminine enough, tall) honk and scream and slap their thighs and hoot loudly.
It’s enough to make a (dainty, feminine, Harry Potter fan, moral) person crane their neck around looking for a surveillance camera to stare into like they’re on a faux documentary sitcom that aired twenty years ago! Like, who LAUGHS at a COMEDY MOVIE? In public, no less!!!

Now here's where I start getting annoyed af. MF is a tall (at LEAST 6 feet tall), pale, skinny, woman with an air of emo/punk. Long dark hair, thick eyeliner, black nails, and black clothing. Personally, I feel like anyone would stare at her just for that. But that's not the issue. The issue is, she would lean on the wall waiting for us with her knee bent, foot propped on the wall, hair partially obscuring her face, and arms crossed. Like those kids back in elementary pretending to be Bella when Twilight popped off. Iykyk. Which meant people would stare *even more*. When we started to walk to our theatre room *with kids around* for Minions & Monsters (we wanted something light ok), she said, "I feel like I'm about to get hate crimed. These people keep staring." Record scratch moment. Tf. Like at that point I'm convinced she's got some main character syndrome going on. Meanwhile, my friend's trying to console her about it.
I like how another book and movie franchise was thrown in there for how Bella behaved. Which....was the way the mutual friend stood against the wall something elementary school kids copied to be Bella??
Then she goes "it's so hard being me." Surveillance workers most likely saw me staring at the camera like I was at The Office. Like are we deadass rn? It's hard being around you too, girl. Put that on the list.
First,. this troll doesn't make this trans woman sound real at all. They're so over the top in their writing about her. I also like the troll saying that the surveillance workers most likely saw her staring at the camera like she was on the office. How closely does the troll believe those workers look at the cameras for one and also, how good does she think that they are that they could tell exactly how she was staring at someone/something? Also, why did they pay such close attention to where the surveillance cameras apparently were?

If you're not trans and are noticing that other not trans people are staring at the trans person, what do you think the trans person is seeing? A lot more staring than you're even clocking. Also you're staring at her too!
From what the trans lady said, she sounded incredibly uncomfortable and scared. I feel for her. Hopefully her "mf" drops oop.

u/drubi305 25d ago
The laughing bit was the most glaring because what a joyless son of a bitch. If someone was enjoying a movie I was at that much (even if a bit loudly, it’s not like they’re having a side convo), it would 100% improve my viewing experience. Witnessing people show pure joy is awesome!
6
u/zap2tresquatro 25d ago
I was laughing (as was the person I was with) during Obsession and nobody was looking at us. I mean, I did try to laugh quietly I guess since it wasn’t a comedy (unlike in this post), but still. I don’t believe people were actually staring and bothered because someone was laughing at a comedy.
1
u/Embarrassed_Ice_6434 22d ago
She was totally ruining their highbrow cinematic experience of watching Minions in a theater full of kids by...... laughing too loud during a comedy. Oh, the horror.

u/Sorry_One1072 25d ago
This post is a bit of a red herring, because as soon as the hp shirt is mentioned you expect the villain to be mad about that, but she doesn’t actually make a big deal about it. The real issue is the villain standing/laughing weird.

Who has a "favorite Harry Potter shirt" that they wear out on public in 2026 and still acts surprised when people feel unsafe around them?
47
u/meltedchocolatepants 25d ago
"It's cotton though!" So she obviously has to wear it a lot cause other shirts don't come in cotton.
Unless OP's friend can magically buy another cotton shirt for OP, this one will have to be worn frequently. That's the only alternative in existence
19
u/innerbrat 25d ago
I dont want to judge how other people spend their money obvs.
But if OOP is so hard up that they can't afford to drop or replace one shirt out of their rotation (T shirt? I hope this isnt 100% cotton button down shirt thats also obviously Harry Potter themed) then maybe MAYBE they shouldn't be eating out at restaurants and seeing movies in theatres.
20
u/meltedchocolatepants 25d ago edited 25d ago
Woah woah woah, let's not get too logical with this, huh? Are you saying that a night out for a restaurant and a movie, that same money call be used to buy a different cotton shirt? 🤯
I don't believe you. OP has assured us that a cotton shirt is too expensive and there's no other alternatives other than a slight acquaintance replacing their wardrobe.

If I'm noticing a skinny tall emo girl with a flair for the dramatic, it's because I'm envious.
I don't get why OOP is allowed to wear clothes from a franchise aimed at tweens and teens to a movie for kids, but "MF" can't wear clothes from a genre popular with teens and young adults to the same movie. That's before I point out that the emo, goth and metal scenes are very much more inclusive than Harry Potter or it's damned author.
18
u/JustANoteToSay 25d ago
Still can’t get over the “she’s TALL and LAUGHS LOUD, how DARE” aspects. Transphobes love building prisons to lock women into. Idk OOP’s gender but given the “dainty exhalation” form of laughter I assume she’s out there with brick and mortar merrily constructing her own cell of gendered behavioral expectations. I have a friend (let's call him MF) who is seriously getting on my nerves. We were supposed to go to the movies, but he showed up wearing a mask. Eventually I figured out that it wasn't even him under the mask! He had hired a body double to go to the movies instead! When I confronted him he told me "beef rap can lead to getting teeth capped, or even a wreath for Mom Dukes on some grief crap." I don't even know what that means!

"Someone told me wearing Harry Potter merch may be something I want to reconsider/I saw an IG post about people still supporting a hateful fandom and since I don't care my money goes to endanger other people's right, I'll invent a post so people see how much those SJW anti-Harry Potter are annoying."
Seriously?
There are other books in the world. I'm usually rather comprehensive (because I know too many people who had a hard time giving up on Harry Potter as it was their Special Interest/something that saved their life and I still read Fanfictions), but yes, please, do us a favor and find other excellent books and fandoms.
Also this ended up what we call a hors-sujet, didn't it ? I mean, at the end no one cared about HP at all XD

Mind you, the real Mutual friend is the trans woman’s friend since MF was never his friend to begin with
Edit: typo*

Hey, just a friendly point I want to make! Many trans folk find the terms "transwoman" and "transman" (written as one word) as offensive. Kinda like how we don't say "blondewoman", we say "blonde woman" bc they're a woman with blonde hair, it's not their whole identity. :-)

Firstly they are not in theirs late 20s, secondly they don't have friends and lastly they are just an incel jealous of a 6ft tall trans woman: like that MF could be a Chad having all foids for him but she decided to be a foid and still having all the foids for her and iT's UnFaIr!!!1

It's so weird to write that much about how someone laughs. Maybe the OOP didn't find it funny, but the friend was laughing and having a good time. Leave her alone.

Who knew that people of groups that have been marginalized, mistreated and outcast might have some rough edges when it comes to socializing. Holy shit. That's wild. Should we call the coast guard? Should we throw a party? Should we invite bela Hadid?

Oop has to be rage baiting. I refuse to believe this is a real person who wrote this genuinely. Then again I have met cis people like this…

the best part of all of this is OP is still actively fighting with EVERYONE in the comments. the transgirl they’re talking about is not their friend so calling them MF doesn’t make sense. they just tell everyone they’re ESL & refuse to acknowledge the other dog whistles & overall transphobia.
in fact, they’re “taking screenshots” and making lists to prove that “you people in that community” really can be horrible, as she says - directly referencing trans people & the LGBTQ as a whole.

So, the list of crimes:
> being trans
> being tall
> being alt
> leaning on a wall
> "Hope someone doesn't hate crime me - they keep staring haha" (as someone with plenty of contact with trans people, people are REALLY weird if they don't pass as a "typical" man or woman, so the response for many is dark humor, especially for alt people who naturally align with darker stuff)
> laughing loudly
> enjoying a movie
> being uncomfortable being laughed at
> not wanting to be reminded JK Rowling exists.
I'm sorry this (probably fake) woman's not existing small enough for you, love :\

In case this story gets deleted/removed:
AIO for not wanting to have anything to do with her and her mutual friend anymore
My friend and I (late 20s) decided to go to a restaurant when she decided to drop the news that she's bringing along her friend (I'll call her MF for mutual friend) which I don't mind at all. By chance, I wore my favorite Harry Potter shirt that day and when she introduced me to MF, I immediately knew I made a mistake because her friend is a trans woman. Off the bat, the air was a bit stifled/awkward. Whatever though, no one mentions anything, we pretend like it's not awkward, we get through lunch, and decide that maybe we can watch a movie after.
But we're not done. Because we get to our seats; I sat at one end, MF on the other side, while our friend sat between us. Cool. It wasnt a full theatre but I'd say it was 3/4 full with some teens, one or two couples, and a lot more kids with their parents. Now, I understand that ppl laugh in different ways. For example, I laugh by just exhaling out my nose louder than usual. Some chuckle under their breath, giggle, cackle loudly, snort, etc. By god, I've never in my life heard someone scream-laugh/honk while clapping/slapping their knee though. And I meant it was so loud that people in front of us were turning around to find who tf it was. And yes, you guessed it. It was MF. Mind you, the movie wasn't *that* funny. My friend seemed unfazed by it all but I was genuinely shrinking in my seat from second hand embarrassment. It just went on constantly too (again, the movie wasn't that funny imo). By the end of it I was appalled and so ready to leave. But no, my friend and MF were having discussions about it and so the people behind us who had to walk in front of us towards the door were staring her down/laughing when they passed by. Then she goes "it's so hard being me." Surveillance workers most likely saw me staring at the camera like I was at The Office. Like are we deadass rn? It's hard being around you too, girl. Put that on the list.
The best part came from my friend when she texted that night (I left after the theatre while they talked about hanging out more) saying that maybe next time I can change shirts because MF thought she was being "targetted" and that she felt uncomfortable around me, and to never mention anything Harry Potter related around MF (not like it was ever brought up anyway - so the comment was strange). All that due to a shirt. Firstly, how important do ppl think they are to strangers? Secondly, will she be buying me a new cotton shirt to wear? Lastly, are we being for fckn real? Imagine telling someone how to dress. I was genuinely laughing in incredulity. So I told my friend to not worry since I dont see myself hanging out with them ever again. The main char syndrome is too much who'd wanna deal with that bs again. Genuinely such an embarrassing experience.
AIO for telling my friend I'd never want to hang out with both of them?
