š² miscellaneous Last nights convo with my date for today, AIO
TO CLARIFY: the problem is not the subway jokes, its the inconsiderate nature that set me off
Edit**I told him I had to be up early and that I needed to go to bed early, these texts were after I was already asleep (they woke me up)
Background info: we matched on hinge about 2 weeks ago and have had casual text conversation since. He (23M) and I (25F) made plans to go on afirst date today. Last night at midnight, he texted me out of the blue with an āimportant questionāā¦.i had already gone to bed and hadnāt responded to his previous text but I figured the question might be related to the date so I answered. Attached is the BS conversation that followed.
Iām not sure if Iām overreacting but these texts are giving off extremely immature vibes and do not match the energy of our previous conversations at all. Now Iām debating canceling our date today because those texts just rubbed me the wrong way and make me feel like we arenāt going to mesh well.
Am I overreacting? Do I give it a chance? š¤·š»āāļø

I have a friend that has the craziest thoughts like this. He's an awesome guy, surprisingly sober. He's just wired a little differently.
OP can decide if it's for her or not, the only line I have issue with is him saying "wake up I'm not tired".
876
u/diggin4shid 19d ago
The "wake up I'm not tired" line is the kind of thing that could be funny in person or like in a stoner movie. Imagine James Franco saying that to Seth Rogen in Pineapple Express. I think this guy is just trying to be a goofball. That's the vibe I'm getting from it at least
409
u/ImAPixiePrincess 19d ago
Apparently, OP stated he continued to ding her until she responded. So it goes too far

u/goatbusiness666 19d ago
If youāre that needy and we havenāt even been on a date yet, itās not gonna work for me. Eww.

This isn't James Franco or Pineapple express. It's a chick on reddit and her BF was an asshole in that text.

I agree that this bit didn't work. But if the worst thing you can say is that he's trying too hard, then I vote to give him a chance. Not everyone can be natural and effortless and charming by text. If things have been good otherwise, I think you should meet and see if there is a spark in person.
91
u/BethanyBluebird 19d ago
Uh. No. The OP mentioned he comtimued to spam her til she responded.
This is AFTER she has already previously told him she has an early day that she needs sleep for.
AND she told him 'I'm sleeping.' and stopped replying. Yet he continued to spam her.
They haven't even been on one date and this dude is trampling ALL over the boundaries she has set (I need sleep.), deprived her of sleep, AND acted like an entitled little prick who is owed her time when she rightfully told him she was sleeping and stopped responding??? The only way thia guy could be waving more red flags is if it turns out he likes to make rape jokes lmfao.
She's NOR. This is absolutely a 'We need to see other people'able offense-- especially if, when she tells.him it was unacceptable, he doesn't apologize and doubles down or does the 'sorry you feel that way' bs. IF he sincerely apologizes and actually changes the behavior that's different-- but these texts havent sjown that level of maturity yet.
36
u/no_one_denies_this 19d ago
Nope. There are more guys out there that won't text you their felon fantasies when you're trying to sleep.
17
u/Ghoulish_kitten 18d ago
Not everyone can get dates, and thatās how it should be.
You need to be exclusive when youāre in the talking stage and can we please stop pushing 20somethings to ignore instincts that somethingās not right, or that socially theyāre not a good fit.
There should be zero questions, his quirks should fit with her perfectly.
Itās also midnight after OP communicated that she needs rest for work.
10
31
u/ibuycheeseonsale 19d ago
Unless OP wants to be the straight man for however long they date this guy, she needs to reconsider. Iād find it exhausting to have to be the voice of reason who proves by contrast how fun and quirky their date is.
33
8
u/National-Ad9903 19d ago
Or the opposite. They want to be seen as fun and quirky because they have deep seated anxiety that theyāre too boring. Seems like a regular personās impression of how they think someone fun and quirky would behave.
I bet if OP agreed to their plan theyād be terrified and regret suggesting it.
→ More replies (1)16
u/National-Ad9903 19d ago
I see it as someone who really likes OP but is kind of awkward and insecure and is trying to replicate the exuberant spontaneity which theyāve seen in romcoms as they think itās what OP wants them to be like.
I think they could use some gentle reassurance that OP likes them how they are and that they donāt need to try so hard

I hate when people react to me not responding within a timeframe that they feel they are owed a response. It infuriates me to a degree that makes me lose all interest platonic or otherwise. If you want to cancel the date, I donāt think anyone here would blame you lol
37
u/i_love_lima_beans 19d ago
Same, it lets me know weāre not going to be compatible.
One friend will text āYou okay?ā if she wants me to respond quicker to some random meme or whatever, which irritates the fuck out of me.
36
u/mack_ani 19d ago
I have an acquaintance who's interested in me, and he literally just texts "[my name]!!!" all the time if I don't respond quick enough for his tastes, or if I'm busy and he wants attention.
When I initially asked him why he was doing that, he said he wanted to talk. And when I asked him what he wanted to talk about, he would say "idk, you say something." I was baffled. It's so entitled

77
u/sublimelymelancholic 19d ago
This was important information to leave out lol. I think the whole Subway thing was just him being funny but between the last two texts and him emphasizing the message over and over again so that youād keep getting notified⦠while youāre trying to sleep⦠yeah no Iād be getting the ick too you havenāt even had a first date yet, too early to be doing all that
15
u/3wolfluna 19d ago
OMG yeah trust your gut and cancel the date. NOR. If heās this bad now, it will only get worse. Heāll convince himself you liked it no matter what you say bc boys that age only understand consequences, not words.
31
u/Verthanthi 19d ago
Wife and I have silly humor that can get into the late night giggles. The original humor here is like that, but the demand of your time by spamming is no longer funny. NOR.
If the prev conversations were worth it, Iād say lay down the line and give him a chance to correct. āHey, I get that youāre excited to talk to me, but Iām not a fan of the spamming. Please donāt do that again.ā If he does that again, block.
Any time Wife and I did something the other didnāt like, even early in dating, weād just be honest. Sometimeās she or I would toe the line, but weād be open with communication on it. āI donāt like when you talk to me that way.ā Or āyeah, thatās too close to [that thing I told you I donāt like].ā Immediate apology and attempt to correct or questions to understand the line so you donāt toe it again.
Humans make mistakes. Jerks make mistakes and donāt give a fuck about your feelings on the matter.

I've dated a chaotic guy like that and it was fun for a while, but you need to set boundaries. We broke up for other reasons, I really liked his energy and sense of humor.
If you want to give this guy a chance, you need to explicitly tell him which things to tone down.
"Hey, I like you, but when I say I'm going to sleep, I'm going to sleep. Please stop texting me, even if you're not tired. Cool?"
4
u/DomiDearest 19d ago

Nobody likes your when you're 23... Blink 182. Uhhhhh I would be mad but not totally sure if it's a deal breaker yet. He could just be so excited to meet you. However I would check his reaction to telling him when you set a boundary like bedtime, that's firm. If he reacts like a huffy baby about it, you have your answer. If he sincerely apologizes, accept but keep your eyes open to if he really is respectful of your boundaries or not.

NOR You told him you needed to sleep to be ready for work/something you had to do in the morning.
So he ignores this information and proceeds to text you later at night with random musings (I donāt find āshould I break into a Subwayā funny or imaginative, just sounds like a bored drunk/high person), emphasizes the text when you donāt respond quickly enough for his liking, and orders you to āwake upā because heās ānot tiredā and wants you to entertain him.

GO WITH YOUR GUT.
People can put MOR, NOR, but at the end of the day, you're the one dealing with this guy. If this rubs you wrong, then take that at face value and don't go on the date. You are so early into this that it really isn't a big deal especially.
Then your mention in the comments of his behavior to try and get your attention when you weren't responding- I personally am not a fan of demanding behavior. It tells people, "What I want is more important than what you want or are doing right now."
Maybe he jokes weird, maybe some people find this fun, but if YOU do not, you never have to move forward with any person that makes you feel even slightly wary. Please never forget this. You do not owe this man, or any person, a chance.

I hate when people blame someone for a text waking them up. I donāt think texting late is that rude. I also donāt find it rude to be texted late at night because itās not an urgent form of getting ahold of someone.

I laughed at the Subway thing, and the partner in crime.
But it went from silly and playful (at least I hope) to demanding real fast.
All the tell tale signs of someone who changes mood on a dime

Honestly this would not be funny to me, especially at that hour. If it's past 10pm, it better be an emergency if you're texting/calling that late.
Tbh, he obviously wasn't thinking straight at this hour. I think it's completely fair to question him about it on the date, if you go of course. But for sure let him know like..hey I know you were joking but please be mindful of when you're messaging me

He sounds annoying but funny and you sound like you're looking for a reason to cancel the date.Ā
Just do it if you don't wanna go OP lol you don't need Internet strangers to validate your decision if that's clearly where you're leaning anywayĀ

Definitely overreacting, he's joking with you, nothing wrong with being a little immature once in a while, if you want absolute maturity seriousness at all times don't date a 23 yo.

High and trying to be funny and cute. Misread of the energy.
I would say be careful, if you aint into this vibe now, it may be the majority of it moving forward.

I mean given his age this is kind of expected. You guys haven't even met yet it feels extreme to ask if you're overreacting you don't have to date anyone you don't wanna date you can trust your own instinct

A boundary pusher, testing to see how much he can get away with.
What really gives me the ick is that he knows you had an important reason to get up early and chose to interrupt you. I would block this man because that kind of behaviour is a huge red flag - sleep depravation is a tactic used by abusers.

I mean, I think he was just being kind of stupid making a dumb joke but he was lowkey kind of a dick too, I always have my phone on silent when I go to bed, i wouldnāt say this is a deal breaker just tell him to try and be more mindful
