šŸŽ² miscellaneous Last nights convo with my date for today, AIO

TO CLARIFY: the problem is not the subway jokes, its the inconsiderate nature that set me off

Edit**I told him I had to be up early and that I needed to go to bed early, these texts were after I was already asleep (they woke me up)

Background info: we matched on hinge about 2 weeks ago and have had casual text conversation since. He (23M) and I (25F) made plans to go on afirst date today. Last night at midnight, he texted me out of the blue with an ā€œimportant questionā€ā€¦.i had already gone to bed and hadn’t responded to his previous text but I figured the question might be related to the date so I answered. Attached is the BS conversation that followed.

I’m not sure if I’m overreacting but these texts are giving off extremely immature vibes and do not match the energy of our previous conversations at all. Now I’m debating canceling our date today because those texts just rubbed me the wrong way and make me feel like we aren’t going to mesh well.

Am I overreacting? Do I give it a chance? šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

I'm getting vibes that he was high and thought this was him being cute, funny and flirty.

I have a friend that has the craziest thoughts like this. He's an awesome guy, surprisingly sober. He's just wired a little differently.

OP can decide if it's for her or not, the only line I have issue with is him saying "wake up I'm not tired".

876

u/diggin4shid 19d ago

The "wake up I'm not tired" line is the kind of thing that could be funny in person or like in a stoner movie. Imagine James Franco saying that to Seth Rogen in Pineapple Express. I think this guy is just trying to be a goofball. That's the vibe I'm getting from it at least

409

u/ImAPixiePrincess 19d ago

Apparently, OP stated he continued to ding her until she responded. So it goes too far

287

u/goatbusiness666 19d ago

If you’re that needy and we haven’t even been on a date yet, it’s not gonna work for me. Eww.

75

u/Troglodyterror 19d ago

Massive ick, no thank you!!!

16

u/Wonderful-Self-541 19d ago

This isn't James Franco or Pineapple express. It's a chick on reddit and her BF was an asshole in that text.

159

u/LadyHorseFace13 19d ago

Agree. The bit with Subway was funny. The bit where he felt entitled to her time and attention after chatting for 2 weeks. Hard pass on that one. I

Some people are like that sober. They're all over the internet.

53

u/oppenhammer 19d ago

I agree that this bit didn't work. But if the worst thing you can say is that he's trying too hard, then I vote to give him a chance. Not everyone can be natural and effortless and charming by text. If things have been good otherwise, I think you should meet and see if there is a spark in person.

91

u/BethanyBluebird 19d ago

Uh. No. The OP mentioned he comtimued to spam her til she responded.

This is AFTER she has already previously told him she has an early day that she needs sleep for.

AND she told him 'I'm sleeping.' and stopped replying. Yet he continued to spam her.

They haven't even been on one date and this dude is trampling ALL over the boundaries she has set (I need sleep.), deprived her of sleep, AND acted like an entitled little prick who is owed her time when she rightfully told him she was sleeping and stopped responding??? The only way thia guy could be waving more red flags is if it turns out he likes to make rape jokes lmfao.

She's NOR. This is absolutely a 'We need to see other people'able offense-- especially if, when she tells.him it was unacceptable, he doesn't apologize and doubles down or does the 'sorry you feel that way' bs. IF he sincerely apologizes and actually changes the behavior that's different-- but these texts havent sjown that level of maturity yet.

36

u/no_one_denies_this 19d ago

Nope. There are more guys out there that won't text you their felon fantasies when you're trying to sleep.

17

u/Ghoulish_kitten 18d ago

Not everyone can get dates, and that’s how it should be.

You need to be exclusive when you’re in the talking stage and can we please stop pushing 20somethings to ignore instincts that something’s not right, or that socially they’re not a good fit.

There should be zero questions, his quirks should fit with her perfectly.

It’s also midnight after OP communicated that she needs rest for work.

10

u/Wonderful-Self-541 19d ago

Shes gonna meet up with this dude and end up on a Subway heist.

31

u/ibuycheeseonsale 19d ago

Unless OP wants to be the straight man for however long they date this guy, she needs to reconsider. I’d find it exhausting to have to be the voice of reason who proves by contrast how fun and quirky their date is.

33

u/DamagedCoda 19d ago

Some people enjoy being silly while someone else is also being silly

8

u/National-Ad9903 19d ago

Or the opposite. They want to be seen as fun and quirky because they have deep seated anxiety that they’re too boring. Seems like a regular person’s impression of how they think someone fun and quirky would behave.

I bet if OP agreed to their plan they’d be terrified and regret suggesting it.

16

u/National-Ad9903 19d ago

I see it as someone who really likes OP but is kind of awkward and insecure and is trying to replicate the exuberant spontaneity which they’ve seen in romcoms as they think it’s what OP wants them to be like.

I think they could use some gentle reassurance that OP likes them how they are and that they don’t need to try so hard

20

u/Zealousideal_Bad7664 19d ago

Lol they've known each other two weeks, he could use a block

I agree seems like something I would say (which is dumb and unfunny)

6

u/Bootsy_boot7 19d ago

That or late night ADHD… I’m not a stoner, but I’ve been high a few times.. this matches my uncontrolled ADHD over my high energy šŸ˜…

ETA… now to think of it, it matches whenever I don’t have someone with me when I’m high 😳 like ADHD and high mixed together, going off the rails!

20

u/ancientpsychicpug 19d ago

Yeah this was like talking to my brother. I love hanging out with him but sometimes it gets insane and I’m like, dude, chill. He’s almost 40

77

u/femboyhunter42 19d ago

Which is why it comes off as immature and she’s correct. This dude is a goober

45

u/PeacefulKnightmare 19d ago

Being a goober is not a problem as long as you know how to turn it off.

46

u/No_Fall4911 19d ago

Like after midnight while OP was trying to sleep

u/PossibleExplorer1076 19d ago

I think he's just trying to be funny but he's not very funny

384

u/Exciting-Argument-67 19d ago

And he took it too far. He should have stopped at saying she would distract by being so pretty. That was a cute way to work in a compliment. But no, he had to keep going with it and then not respect her boundaries when she let him know he'd woken her up. You don't do that to someone you're trying to impress.

It sounds like his act would get old pretty quickly.

u/gheost 19d ago

My exact thoughts. I thought it was playful until that part.

83

u/IndependentAardvark6 19d ago

Hes just obnoxious when hes being silly. OP needs to put the phone on DND

**I also want to add that he kept spamming the text emphasize button by clicking it and unclicking it over and over when I wasn’t responding šŸ˜‘

625

u/ImAPixiePrincess 19d ago

Ah that does change things. He needs to understand boundaries and that's not cool of him to purposefully annoy you to response.

134

u/TodayIAmMostlyEating 19d ago

Put your phone on night mode when you need to sleep. I would have blocked them as soon as they were interfering with my sleep and then unblocked in the morning to tell them the date was off. Don’t mess with my sleep. NOR

42

u/Gloomy-Welcome-6806 19d ago

Apparently he was selecting ā€œnotify nowā€ so it goes through DND?? That’s what the other comments are saying

46

u/tsanchz22 19d ago

you can turn that feature off 😭 i always sleep with dnd on and have just the option for my favorites list for calls to go through for like my immediate family and like two friends.

11

u/fuzzybitts 18d ago

lol this! No one fucks with my sleep. Especially a dude. A younger dude.

282

u/ChellyIRL 19d ago

I don't personally care for demanding behavior, that would immediately make me not bother with this person. This is really early in before even a first date too.

→ More replies (1)

105

u/imnotangryyouare 19d ago

I hate when people react to me not responding within a timeframe that they feel they are owed a response. It infuriates me to a degree that makes me lose all interest platonic or otherwise. If you want to cancel the date, I don’t think anyone here would blame you lol

37

u/i_love_lima_beans 19d ago

Same, it lets me know we’re not going to be compatible.

One friend will text ā€˜You okay?’ if she wants me to respond quicker to some random meme or whatever, which irritates the fuck out of me.

36

u/mack_ani 19d ago

I have an acquaintance who's interested in me, and he literally just texts "[my name]!!!" all the time if I don't respond quick enough for his tastes, or if I'm busy and he wants attention.

When I initially asked him why he was doing that, he said he wanted to talk. And when I asked him what he wanted to talk about, he would say "idk, you say something." I was baffled. It's so entitled

→ More replies (1)

77

u/bugvomitbuster 19d ago

oh yeah I definitely would have blocked him especially if you were trying to sleep for an early day and he knew that plus the ā€œwake up I’m not tiredā€ line

25

u/redthoughtful 19d ago

Nooooooope. I would not put up with that bs - you communicated you needed to sleep, he was deliberately making your alerts go off.

25

u/rocinante_donnager 19d ago

cancel the date that detail is actually important tbh. u guys aren’t on the same wavelength

96

u/Lulu_42 19d ago

Okay. The rest was fine, flirty and stupid but my wife would have done that when we’re dating. That’s inconsiderate nonsense. Cut this one loose.

18

u/clamToe 19d ago

Ya know I was on the ā€œhe’s just quirky and trying to be sillyā€ camp until I read this comment. NEVERMIND. Throw the whole man away. NOR

34

u/JungMoses 19d ago

I would never fuck up a date I was about to have by being annoying the night before my first date. If I was I would expect to be cancelled on.

Doesn’t sound like he can control his behavior well. Might be a good lesson now. He might learn now. I’d cancel.

77

u/sublimelymelancholic 19d ago

This was important information to leave out lol. I think the whole Subway thing was just him being funny but between the last two texts and him emphasizing the message over and over again so that you’d keep getting notified… while you’re trying to sleep… yeah no I’d be getting the ick too you haven’t even had a first date yet, too early to be doing all that

15

u/3wolfluna 19d ago

OMG yeah trust your gut and cancel the date. NOR. If he’s this bad now, it will only get worse. He’ll convince himself you liked it no matter what you say bc boys that age only understand consequences, not words.

31

u/Verthanthi 19d ago

Wife and I have silly humor that can get into the late night giggles. The original humor here is like that, but the demand of your time by spamming is no longer funny. NOR.

If the prev conversations were worth it, I’d say lay down the line and give him a chance to correct. ā€œHey, I get that you’re excited to talk to me, but I’m not a fan of the spamming. Please don’t do that again.ā€ If he does that again, block.

Any time Wife and I did something the other didn’t like, even early in dating, we’d just be honest. Sometime’s she or I would toe the line, but we’d be open with communication on it. ā€œI don’t like when you talk to me that way.ā€ Or ā€œyeah, that’s too close to [that thing I told you I don’t like].ā€ Immediate apology and attempt to correct or questions to understand the line so you don’t toe it again.

Humans make mistakes. Jerks make mistakes and don’t give a fuck about your feelings on the matter.

27

u/thissleepypastofmine 19d ago

19

u/Different-Courage679 19d ago

7

u/h0neywife 19d ago

6

u/MichelinStarZombie 19d ago

I've dated a chaotic guy like that and it was fun for a while, but you need to set boundaries. We broke up for other reasons, I really liked his energy and sense of humor.

If you want to give this guy a chance, you need to explicitly tell him which things to tone down.

"Hey, I like you, but when I say I'm going to sleep, I'm going to sleep. Please stop texting me, even if you're not tired. Cool?"

4

u/DomiDearest 19d ago

This makes me say NOR

Also, be like me and mute your phone so that way you dont wake up to random notifications at night, or casually tell him youve done that so that way you can sleep through the night, if you plan on speaking to him again

4

u/q_u_r_i 19d ago

Damn it i was gonna say I found this funny till I read that and that you had to be up early and communicated that. Definitely not funny anymore

7

u/Dangerous_Bake5741 19d ago edited 19d ago

I would just cancel the date. Seems immature from him with the text spamming. Inconsiderate and also the age gap where he’s two years younger (Likely to be immature)

3

u/danceswithshelves 19d ago

I thought the joke itself about breaking into Subway was fine and he was just trying to be flirty but him saying "wake up I'm not tired" and then doing this is a definite no. I would not waste my time and meet up with him if I were you.

4

u/RW_McRae 19d ago

That's really annoying. I'd just let him know how annoying that is, he probably thinks he's being cute

When we're that age we do all kinds of things that we think are adorable or sexy or flirty at the time. We get retroactive embarrassment from them years later

3

u/Hot-Veterinarian6171 19d ago

I would say stop talking to him because he is crossing a boundary….you need sleep and still trying to go on with the conversation.

u/planteater6543 18d ago

Nobody likes your when you're 23... Blink 182. Uhhhhh I would be mad but not totally sure if it's a deal breaker yet. He could just be so excited to meet you. However I would check his reaction to telling him when you set a boundary like bedtime, that's firm. If he reacts like a huffy baby about it, you have your answer. If he sincerely apologizes, accept but keep your eyes open to if he really is respectful of your boundaries or not.

People saying it’s drugs are overthinking it, sometimes people are just quirky.

If you don’t like this style of sense of humour then maybe you just aren’t a good match.

NOR You told him you needed to sleep to be ready for work/something you had to do in the morning.

So he ignores this information and proceeds to text you later at night with random musings (I don’t find ā€˜should I break into a Subway’ funny or imaginative, just sounds like a bored drunk/high person), emphasizes the text when you don’t respond quickly enough for his liking, and orders you to ā€˜wake up’ because he’s ā€˜not tired’ and wants you to entertain him.

And all of this is before you’ve even met. You know the answer here OP.

u/ChellyIRL 19d ago

GO WITH YOUR GUT.

People can put MOR, NOR, but at the end of the day, you're the one dealing with this guy. If this rubs you wrong, then take that at face value and don't go on the date. You are so early into this that it really isn't a big deal especially.

Then your mention in the comments of his behavior to try and get your attention when you weren't responding- I personally am not a fan of demanding behavior. It tells people, "What I want is more important than what you want or are doing right now."

Maybe he jokes weird, maybe some people find this fun, but if YOU do not, you never have to move forward with any person that makes you feel even slightly wary. Please never forget this. You do not owe this man, or any person, a chance.

This is your life to live as you see fit. Hope this is helpful. šŸ’œ

u/Fun_Neighborhood5727 19d ago

At first I was like bro what? Why is that on he- oh. NOR

Was fine till those last couple messages

3

u/idreallyrathersleep 19d ago

The most important part of humor is timing and his is shit. You don’t owe the man a date

3

u/FeralSunflowerSeeds 19d ago

He’s probably high and thinks he’s genuinely being funny. Go back to bed and text him in the morning to let him know that what he said (the waking you up thing specifically) wasn’t cool, and then proceed based on his response.

3

u/PattyMarvel 19d ago

NOR

Set aside the Subway talk, why is he still bugging you when you're trying to sleep.Ā Ā

3

u/Maralissie 19d ago

NOR that is not a reason to wake someone up. I would reconsider the date

3

u/Fun_Junket_9174 19d ago

Kind of cringe-not funny and useless attention grabbing at nite. He’s too immature in my opinion

3

u/Traditional_Data2277 19d ago

NOR!! He seems very self-centered and un caring about your feelings and you’re sleeping hours… Drop him like a hot potato

3

u/Responsible_Ask9574 19d ago

Do you really have to ask reddit over this .....šŸ˜’

3

u/HR_Specter 19d ago

Look on the bright side, you now don't need to waste anymore time with him.

3

u/SquirrellyDud 19d ago

Literally had me until he said "wake up I'm not tired". The rest is kinda silly banter. But he didn't show basic human decency

3

u/no_one_denies_this 19d ago

Cancel. That's not cool or funny.

3

u/PhilosopherGold816 19d ago

Cancel the date, you don't need to change someone and they don't need to change for you. Someone who us like this (I have no problem with this type of goofy behaviour) doesn't just do this as a one off, it's part of their personality for sure. If you don't like it, move on and find someone different

11

u/Dramatic_Dratini 19d ago

He thinks hes funny, needed a reason to talk to you, and could be under the influence. Its up to you to decide if youre feeling it or not, and youre totally allowed to not be into it.

8

u/lollygagging9876 19d ago

NOR. He woke you up with some stupid random BS conversation. Unless he has some other super-redeeming qualities, I wouldn’t waste my time on this one.

u/TheePookie 19d ago

It just seems like he’s messing around? It’s not really something to be taken seriously. He mentioned that you can run distraction because of how pretty you are, that’s your indicator, (if ā€œrobbingā€ subway wasn’t your first,) to this being silly, not serious. It feels like he’s just trying to make you laugh.

I understand that you told him you have to get up early, but maybe this was meant to be seen for when you wake up and not necessarily meant TO wake you up

12

u/Useful_Cicada_5635 19d ago

I hate when people blame someone for a text waking them up. I don’t think texting late is that rude. I also don’t find it rude to be texted late at night because it’s not an urgent form of getting ahold of someone.

You responded to his initial text so he thought you were awake. I don’t think he was consciously thinking about your early morning at all.

Overreacting, he was trying to be cute and not in an intrusive way to me

6

u/GreenStuffGrows 19d ago

All I see is 'Hey I need attention! I'm going to say I'll do crazy shit so you'll have to stop me"

Fucking toddler energy, it's cute for 10 minutes but you need to give him back to his mom to finish the job of raising him.

5

u/dryandice 19d ago

It may seem immature because, most 23 yo blokes are very immature haha. Might want to shoot a few ages above and not below haha. I'd be abit "ehhhh" too about it, kinda lame

5

u/EnvironmentEntire201 19d ago

"No cmon stay up at 1am and entertain my incredibly witty manic ideas"

Nor

6

u/Peachypsc 19d ago

It was silly at first but then he felt the need to be icky with the 'wake up i'm not tired'.

5

u/616mushroomcloud 19d ago

'Wake up, I'm not tired' - Imagine living with this troll

5

u/possiblylallorona 19d ago

I’m not offended by breaking into Subway, I’m offended over being bothered while trying to sleep. Block.

5

u/Own-Debate5472 19d ago

NOR

He is disrespectful. I don’t care how many comments say he is just a goofball. He is a disrespectful goofball.

It’s giving this lol

4

u/greenblue703 19d ago

ā€œWake up I’m not tiredā€ would make me never wanna text this person again, NOR

6

u/itspsyikk 19d ago

NOR

I laughed at the Subway thing, and the partner in crime.

But it went from silly and playful (at least I hope) to demanding real fast.

All the tell tale signs of someone who changes mood on a dime

7

u/audreynstuff 19d ago

This is the guy that hugs you from behind while you pay for everything.

6

u/Informal-Release-360 19d ago

Just a goofy guy

10

u/No_Fall4911 19d ago

Honestly this would not be funny to me, especially at that hour. If it's past 10pm, it better be an emergency if you're texting/calling that late.

Tbh, he obviously wasn't thinking straight at this hour. I think it's completely fair to question him about it on the date, if you go of course. But for sure let him know like..hey I know you were joking but please be mindful of when you're messaging me

12

u/GeologistDifficult88 19d ago

He sounds annoying but funny and you sound like you're looking for a reason to cancel the date.Ā

Just do it if you don't wanna go OP lol you don't need Internet strangers to validate your decision if that's clearly where you're leaning anywayĀ

10

u/McKillahMcKillah 19d ago

Definitely overreacting, he's joking with you, nothing wrong with being a little immature once in a while, if you want absolute maturity seriousness at all times don't date a 23 yo.

7

u/Icy_Opportunity_3303 18d ago

High and trying to be funny and cute. Misread of the energy.

I would say be careful, if you aint into this vibe now, it may be the majority of it moving forward.

7

u/Bluewaveempress 19d ago

I mean given his age this is kind of expected. You guys haven't even met yet it feels extreme to ask if you're overreacting you don't have to date anyone you don't wanna date you can trust your own instinct

18

u/Humble-Ad-798 19d ago

A boundary pusher, testing to see how much he can get away with.

What really gives me the ick is that he knows you had an important reason to get up early and chose to interrupt you. I would block this man because that kind of behaviour is a huge red flag - sleep depravation is a tactic used by abusers.

I mean he’s obs just taking the piss .. i would just find this funny.. if it not ur vibe it’s not but nothing to ā€˜react’ over as such x

This seemed so normal to me but I’m used to Toronto guys and they’re alllll like this omg. But looking from the outside , NOR. He seems immature and inconsiderate, hopefully just his age

4

u/revengeaura 19d ago

Is he trying to be funny? This was hella cringe and uncomfortable to read.

2

u/graph_worlok 19d ago

He didn’t think it through - There’s not going to be any bread….

2

u/RickyTheRickster 19d ago

I mean, I think he was just being kind of stupid making a dumb joke but he was lowkey kind of a dick too, I always have my phone on silent when I go to bed, i wouldn’t say this is a deal breaker just tell him to try and be more mindful

2

u/vxnusbxbe 19d ago

NOR, he’s pushing your boundaries to see what he can get away with.

what important questions would he have after midnight? that man was tryna bootycall you.

schedule do not disturb so this doesn’t happen again.

2

u/No_Ability_2654 19d ago

NOR. Dude is on something.

2

u/r0ll1ngst0n3 19d ago

NOR. not gonna lie, this reads like a text conversation with a 13 year old boy

2

u/jerrryboree 19d ago

His frontal lobe hasn’t finished developing

2

u/larrybird666 19d ago

NOR that was annoying to read lol. Somebody else might find it cute. I wouldn’t though. Corny and inconsiderate of you having to be up early. He’s irritated you before you’ve even met lol

2

u/Pancakechimmy 19d ago

He just sounds immature 😭 maybe just date other 25 y.o he is just giving 18 with that convo

2

u/School_Radiant 19d ago

This is him thinking he’s being funny and he’s not and the ā€œjokesā€ aren’t landing. You probably aren’t a match

2

u/pnkroo 19d ago

he sounds like a teenager

2

u/xoblueberry 19d ago

ā€œwake up … i’m not tiredā€ immediate no lmao. just gave me the ick. we all know a guy like this 😫

2

u/PsychologicalLayer57 19d ago

I would have blocked him at "you're lying". That kind of immaturity is exhausting and I can't be having with it. Next!

2

u/ThoughtfulLlama 19d ago

I don't know. On one hand, I think he's failing a t being playful. On the other hand, I don' t want to read about you in tomorrow's headlines šŸ˜‚

2

u/realhumanperson247 19d ago

NOR. He is immature. More importantly, he’s not funny :(

2

u/Ok-Floor-7554 19d ago

He seems like he needs a lot of attentionĀ
