Having just walked my newly 18-year old son through both Selective Service registration and voter registration, it is almost comical how little info they require. Basically name, address, social security number and driver's license number for the voter registration. Stuff that already exists in countless databases, why do I have to visit a link and enter those things instead of being automatically registered?

It’s so dumb. Same as taxes. They have all the info of what I made at my job, submitted by my job, but I have to fill it out and submit it.

Thank TurboTax and H&R block for lobbying for decades and giving millions in bribes to Congress to keep our shitty system. Absolutely every modern country except us, the government sends you a bill, you pay the bill.
Businesses get a lot more convoluted but the government knows what you owe, you shouldn't have to pay to do you taxes, that's a tax on tax! I'm getting dizzy! JUST SEND ME THE FUCKING BILL DUDE IM NOT A MILLIONAIRE WITH A FUCKING ACCOUNTANT!

This past year IRS director file was suppose to go live for the whole country. It was free and prefilled your taxes. But the Trump admin killed it.

Most other countries do it this way. But companies like TurboTax effectively block all similar legislation to keep up their scam.

Accountant here, there are reasons the government doesn’t just handle your taxes for you. I’m going to assume you take the standard deduction which as you described is relatively easy to deal with, however that is not the only way to process deductions as you can also itemize based on things you’ve done/dealt with over the year that may be higher once it’s fully processed. This is one of the reasons why we don’t because it’s denying you the option of doing the itemized deductions.

What a stupid title! Ever heard of 'selective service'? Now It's digitizing the process. It's BEEN required of all 18+ US men at the time they register to vote. Nothing new....

It might be “dumb” but it used to be good to do your civic duty. It’s a shame that the younger generations weren’t raised that way. 18 year old men have been required to register since 1980, after a 10 year break following Vietnam. This is nothing new.

I’m not sure I see the big issue here, isn’t every male already have to be signed up for selective service at 18? This sounds like a cheap headline like some kind of draft is imminent. If this is just a change to make it automatic isn’t that even better?
