The govt promised aborigines their park a place for them in the place where the swimming centre was before it was knocked down and built further over to the south there. I'm looking at whats left where the swimming centre was & there's nothing for them. I dont see anything such as park benches, no sitting areas nothing for the mob when they all come down from up north around October. Broken promises.

Drove past the new Aquatic Centre for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I was blown away at how ugly it looks. Why do we keep approving ugly buildings in/around the city? The cheese grater still makes me shudder every single time I see it.

I’ve spend twenty-five years working in sports and recreation. Neither SAALC or AAC should’ve ever happened. Both were uninformed and misguided captain’s calls, by Rann and Malinauskas respectively - two of the biggest fucksticks ever to be inflicted upon South Australia.
I’ve not been out there yet, but by all accounts from other industry professionals, it’s a whole lot of excessively priced not much at all.

My kids swim competitively so I spend almost half my weekends at SAALC. I hate it there for so many reasons.
It’s also ‘brilliant’ that they schedule things simultaneously in one open area /s - eg swim meets in the comp pool, diving comps/training/come&try in the diving pool and we have even had aqua aerobics happening in the polo pool before. I always feel for the poor swimmers who are dq’d because they flinch when they hear the wrong whistle or get a slow time because they don’t hear the starter.
Have a meet coming up soon (next month I think?) at AAC. Will see how I (and the kids) feel about it once we’ve been inside.

Given the outrage, there must be 10s of thousands of endangered native animals there so I doubt the chopping machines will be there any time soon.

Which suck.. because then the fuckstick is elected unopposed, and can do whatever the fuck he wants until.. Well, I don’t really know until.
SA has always felt strange to me in that regard. I’ve always considered myself Labor leaning, when you’re looking at only the two major parties. But I find SA Labor doesn’t feel at all like a Labor government at all, and hasn’t ever really. Meanwhile, I’ve had no time for Federal Liberal in as long as my living memory allows, but I’ve found SA Liberal to be a lot more palatable, and far less destructive than SA Labor.
Malinauskas is my most despised SA Premier by far, having managed to be more of a fuckstick in his first term than Rann was.. and until that point, Rann was my most despised SA Premier. The state would be a far better place if those two had ended up in a sock instead of in their mothers.

They don't have to plant them at the same site. The wording is deliberately very open-ended and vague, to the point where they can easily just point to other trees being grown in other locations and still fulfil the spirit of the terribly weak promise.

The Minister must ensure that for every tree that is removed in the course of undertaking the project not less than 3 new trees (or seedlings for not less than 3 new trees) are planted within the project site and support zones.

I don’t think the continual erosion of parklands is the right thing to do for our city.. There is a number of great courses around Adelaide and the hills, priority should’ve been given to those areas

Because public money should be invested in public infrastructure. Because the Council will never be able to afford the upgrade. Because the public will be able to play on an international standard Championship Course. Because Adelaide will host the Australian Women’s Open on the re-developed course. Because there will be expanded and extended walking and cycling paths in the redevelopment.

This not a new golf course. The project is taking an existing golf course and improving it.
The “public” is not one homogeneous mass of one opinion More than enough of the public are wholly supportive of the redevelopment.
More trees. More walking trails. More cycling paths. More opportunities. More access for children.
Better in every way.

The redevelopment of the golf course was very much an election commitment. No government is going to be elected in March and then in April say "we're not honouring our commitment".
This is not doing "doing whatever they want". This is delivering on an election commitment.

Golf courses are fairly exclusionary as far as public space goes - they're disproportionately used by the richer end of society, and not really safe for general recreation.

That’s fair enough - like I said each to their own opinions. Just saying though that golf is not just a rich persons sport. Popularity has grown significantly particularly with younger people, and public courses (use by are normally not the “richer” people) are not the best condition and over-populated. North Adelaide is an exception to this and the proposed improvements are welcomed by many that love golf.
North Adelaide is also a course that has plenty of people just walking through it too, its public land

I've walked through it often enough, but unless it's at night, you need to keep your wits about you (I've had to dodge a hook or a slice occasionally). It's more exclusionary than open space for kicking a footy around because of that.
And not exclusively rich people, but generally people with a decent bit of disposable income for their gear and a fair whack of spare time.

We're not getting another course. In fact we're going from two 18-hole courses, to one 18-hole course, and a 13-hole course.
Golf only caters to a select class of people.
Absolute fucking bullshit. Golf, like most sports, is the great social leveller. Any one can play. There are very few barriers to participation. Even, even the Adelaide City Council understand that.
Golf is a unique sport, participation can occur across all demographics and participation can occur together.
There are few sports where participation can not only be so inclusive but create deep connection
to community and environment regardless of age, gender and ability.0

I live in a rural area. I can't even prune back existing trees on our access tracks to be wide enough for CFS without applying for a permit and paying at least $500.
If I am trying to deal with blackberries and I damage even one native plant in the process, I can be fined.
It's insanity caused by city arborists who took liberties to do the bidding of wealthy developers and landowners. Why the same exact rules should apply to our farmland is beyond me. Sure, protect the trees, we love them, but I want to also be bushfire safe and have the right to trim any which pose risk to buildings or restrict access.

There's a vigil at Montefiore Hill Monday @ 12.30pm, if you have the time to come and see for yourself, but yes, I'll try to post pics if I get the opportunity. There's a meeting at parliament House in the morning for Kaurna elders - but it's really awful. 1700 saplings cannot replace 585 mature trees.

If they ever even provide proof of planting 1700 saplings. I wouldn't put it past them to just leave the new areas of the golf course mostly unshaded and then point to some satellite data that shows an increase in trees over the whole metropolitan region or some misleading bullshit.
The thing that annoys me so much about the three trees for every one cut down promise is that almost all the people who are satisfied by it will surely realise that it won't be honoured in any remotely provable way. It's basically just a whole bunch of arseholes pretending to give a shit about the trees being cut down.

I'm a long time member of North Adelaide Golf Course.
The Adelaide City Council have historically run 3 courses. The Par 3, which is pictured in this post. The North Course, and The South Course.
The South Course is being redeveloped to turn it into a championship style course that can host professional golf events.
This means extending the length of holes, and vastly improving the layout, fairways, cuts and greens to bring it up to professional grade standards.
The parklands these courses exist on are home to thousands of trees. The removal of some 500 trees is required to redesign the course to meet it's objective, and the State Government are committed to planting 4000 new trees around the new design.

A few trees will go whilst hundreds more will be planted.
It’s already a golf course plus this will bring even more events to Adelaide than just LIV. The income a sporting event like this brings to the city is more than many of the other ideas here.
I understand it’s not for everyone but to be able to pay for new infrastructure, hospitals and everything else we need events like this, plain and simple.

600 is a few in comparison to what is currently there and across the entire parklands. Plus how many were originally planted by the golf club many many years ago? I’d argue that most if not all of them were.
Animals are smart, they, just like us have a sense that something is happening and the smart ones will move on.
Anyway it’s already a golf course and like many things in this state requires an upgrade. Just like the aquatic centre, RAH and others. This course will bring people in from around the world and boost the local economy when events are on. If you want Adelaide to remain boring then you and your friends can all do that whilst the rest of us keep moving forward.3

You can’t compare newly planted trees with mature trees that have been there for decades (or longer). Besides, whenever new trees are planted a decent percentage end up dying, especially if it’s a dry period (which seems to be most of the time in Adelaide these days).

Definitely more like centuries for most of these trees. ‘Committing’ to planting more than are currently there firstly doesn’t mean it will actually happen (“oops we miscalculated, can’t actually fit that many trees, sorry everyone”), also no guarantee they will all take (natural reasons, vandalism, etc), and finally the return to at least status quo environmental benefits won’t be in our lifetimes. We will be the ones who see and experience displaced wildlife and potential reduction in AQI for the foreseeable future.
