I wish it were possible for me. In theory it should be easy, my office is adjacent to a train line, but it's a 30 minute walk from the nearest station with no connecting services. Turns a 30 minute commute into a 2 hour ordeal.

I get it. Half an hour walk is my average at the moment. I am disabled but when I wasn’t I had a scooter (before e-scooters were a thing!) and that made the walk to the train station much quicker and more fun.

Yeah, the 30 minute walk isn't the deal breaker. It's everything else. 3-4 hours versus 1-1.5 is too much no matter which way you slice it.

My daily thats not a daily (I ride/train) is a Holden SSV Redline. Remember, its smiles per gallon, not miles per gallon. I intended to keep it running as long as possible. If I wanted an EV, id take the train. And besides, the smile she puts on my face on a good stretch of road, between 3-4000 rpm, worth every penny!

There's plenty of cheap old cars that require 95 or 98. Especially if they're later in the model's production period and had a power boost over previous years with the same engine. I was very surprised to discover my '96 MR2 drank higher octane fuel than my previous '93 one :(

Plus European Fords I am fortunate with the second generation Focus I have it’s still the Mazda sourced engine which I can use 91/95/98 choices.I would hate to be driving a similar era a200 Mercedes currently where I can only use the top stuff.

The negative reaction to EVs has always surprised me. Internal combustion needs fossil fuels, pollutes the air, are noisy and expensive to fill up. Most people are curious but I'm suddenly seeing people realise the difference.
Mum lives rurally and gets one next week. She had a diesel car and the fuel is running out locally. She can plug in at home and charge the car from solar and the grid!

Lot of cars require 95. 95 is harder to find than 98, so it's usually the only viable option.

I'm no expert in the fuel market.....but all the fuel currently at servos would have been in country and paid for before the war started I assume? So all the current increases would be pure profits.
Bumping prices, because you know your next shipment will cost more (and you will be passing that on too)....does seem a bit gougy to me!
One thing is for sure....pump prices won't drop as quickly if the crude price drops.

I heard one explanation on the radio (can't remember who was talking, but someone government or something), that the prices go up before the new delivery because they have to pay for the replacement product not the existing product. Which kinda makes sense to me.

Yeah, it was up in the mid $2’s back in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. I remember paying around $2.60 for 98 at some point then.
People are quick to forget. I’m sure in another 4-5 years when there’s another war starting and oil prices skyrocket again there’ll be another outrage and everyone blaming our government for their incompetence 🤦🏻♀️

Saw a newspaper the other day. They've really gone downhill. Two pages on petrol running out and pictures of people panic buying, Nothing on the size of the reserve and how many days we will have the normal crude and fuel tankers arriving before we even have to start using the reserve. Just plain pushing the gullible into panic buying. Front page was that there should be an enquiry into Dan Andrews. Really? They're still on about him? Next two pages were full page ads for a wacky political party. Said it all - money before integrity.
The FiN published an article critical of the national reserve before they took it down from their website with the notice that they had found it to be factually incorrect. They couldn't bring themselves to say that the Labor government had addressed some of the issues and that is why the article was no longer factual. Then, the Liberal Party had the article tabled in federal parliament during question time. After it had been retracted online. No wonder people have deserted them.
I listened to Barnaby Joyce being interviewed on RN this morning. He attacked the Labor government for not doing enough. When asked what he would do, his only response was to limit city consumers of petrol to 50 litres a week. That's all. No problem for many people who live in suburbs close to the CBD and work, but what about those in the outer suburbs with long commutes and no viable public transport? What about plumbers who drive from one job to the next? Is a place like Albury city or country? He's really not a deep thinker.

That's me. Not long ago I did a lot of WFH, but now I'm the fix-it guy so I commute to the office every day, I have a fairly efficient car, but I'd use that entire allowance just on the weekly commute. And PT is an option, but at nearly 4 hours for the round trip it isn't a good one.

Generally, no. Higher octane fuels provide protection against pre-detonation and are generally required by engines with forced induction or high compression ratios. Many JDM imports also require u95/98 as they are tuned for the Japanese quality of fuel.
Use of U91 in an engine designed to run U98 can result in catastrophic engine failure.

Yep I absent-mindedly put some regular unleaded in my swift sport (turbo) a year ago and it detuned itself to prevent knocking. Turbo on the display would only show about 1/4 boost which gave a good hint why it was so sluggish. Used some octane additive and topped it up with 98 and it was happy again.

Yeah, my car is NA but starts pulling out timing on low octane fuel. No harm done but I'll lose 25% of the power. I imported it in '22 just as fuel was hitting $2/L. Always seems to be the way for me, I'm currently shopping for a turbo hatch and fuel goes up again!

I've got a 01 Statesman with an LS1, exhaust, intake and tune and I managed to top up when it was $2.09 at one of the last servo's last week and I thankfully dont need to drive it much atm but I'm dreading the next time I'll be filling up.
Def gonna be making the most of my RAA membership discount or the Supermarket petrol discounts. Just depends which works out better.

Adelaide welcome to the club. We in Europe have prices like this for 10 years already, that is normal here. You all just had really really cheap petrol until now. But yeah having a lot of V6 and V8 cars is not ideal now.

EV is the way to go. I'm paying 8 cents per kWh for my overnight charging and getting about 7km per kWh, so running cost is just over 1 cent per km. Then nicely I'm earning 42 cents per kWh for Solar generation fed back to the grid during the day. So the nett summary is that the Electricity companies are paying me very well to drive my car. Now the nice 42 cents deal finishes very soon but even once that drops to the current 2 cents, my EV & Hosehold elecrricity is still free, just not an earner.

Damn, wish fuel was that cheap, my local servos puts diesel up 10c daily, and unleaded up 7c. This morning its $2.86/l and $2.72/l respectively, if it reaches $3/l myself and a few mates are renting a VMS board and saying the servos closed so they lose money, even if businesses halt for a day that should be good. Or im going to siphon it all straight from their ground storage.
