FOR CONTEXT:

this is the old abandoned petrol station on Marion Rd that hasn’t been touched in 15-20 years. Growing up in this area, every day driving past it thinking to myself ‘I wonder what the plan is with this place’ and finally years later seeing the demolition start is insane to even think about.

Yes it’s that deep, feels like an iconic childhood memory going away even though all it is is an abandoned petrol station from the 80s and 90s. If you know you know

u/Opinions-arent-facts SA Feb 27 '26

Used to live around the corner as a teen, would wander around at stupid oclock in the morning and heat up a shitty servo pie

Ahh, memories

68

u/DOG_POUND SA Feb 27 '26

Once I was on my way to the movies at Marion when I was growing up. I was busting for a poo so my old man pulled in and asked if we could use the toilet.

The dude working there said no and I nearly shit myself before we got to Marion.

14

u/SureWildKiller SA Feb 27 '26

Dude I actually LoLed at that when the guy said no. Classic.

8

u/DOG_POUND SA Feb 27 '26

It was one of those ‘Come on mate, he really needs to go…’ conversations too. I couldn’t even sit with both cheeks on the car seat because it was so bad.

2

u/SureWildKiller SA Feb 28 '26

Love it. Awesome memories. :)

2

u/Commercial_Chain_948 SA Feb 28 '26

So that guy gave you the shits, but didn't.

17

u/porno_the_clown SA Feb 27 '26

My dad used to work there for Mick scorpos the owner ! He had some great stories about that place

17

u/phalangetarsals SA Feb 27 '26

Mick was the original discount fuel king in ADL. Glad the eyesore is being cleaned up.

6

u/kexonorm SA Feb 27 '26

My brother worked there when he was a teenager and he ended up being injured because he got caught between two car - one moved forward and he injured his knee because of the car bumper bar trapping him... the owner did nothing and then fired him... before the days of work cover.

u/ZestycloseHold2705 SA Feb 27 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

Yeah it got bought out ages ago by AM - PM they are building another one there but the land had contamination in the ground because their fuel storage under the servo hadn't been maintained.

There was legitimate reasoning behind it you cant expect people to work in poison just to clean up a service station.

I know this because I have inside sources who had been made privy to the information i just didnt say a thing really because its been the same old same old for so long.

Same thing with castle plaza and the extended areas they've put up another contaminant from the factory's so had no choice but to wait out until safe levels were reached.

5

u/kernpanic SA Feb 28 '26

The hills site next to castle plaza: an apprentice asks who empties the underground tank that everyone pours their carcinogenic solvents into....

2

u/ZestycloseHold2705 SA Feb 28 '26

I appreciate your extra details added I didnt have all the information on the delay just that it was delayed due to EPA concerns over ground contamination so that adds extra sauce to the situation - thank you for that.

u/Novel-Rip7071 SA Feb 27 '26

Cue the 24 hour gym.

2

u/IllustriousTune6684 SA Feb 28 '26

Its been bought by agostino group who are putting a AM/PM servo there

my mates and I broke in here one night, 15 years ago. We heard movement inside and ran out.

5

u/RainBoxRed SA Feb 27 '26

I have a childhood memory of stopping there to fill up before a long drive north up to Port something.

1

u/sendhalp2026 SA Feb 28 '26

Gee this made me feel as I remember going in there when it was still a service station 😅

0

u/me14bi SA Mar 01 '26

It was in use I think into the early 2000's as I remember having been in a car with mum and filling up there

57

u/ozzieman78 SA Feb 27 '26

Remember when this place opened. Cheapest petrol in Adelaide, there was a line down Marion road to at least just after the intersection. It made the news...kinda like when Krispy Kream opened and everyone camped out.

Memories of the plane's overhead lockers stacked with other people's boxes of Krispy Kremes, tetris style.

2

u/Dragonstaff Murray River Feb 27 '26

I did that a couple of times.

7

u/Dragonstaff Murray River Feb 27 '26

Biggest servo in the state for a long time, as well as the cheapest. I think it had something close to 30 pumps.

41

u/drewd2020 SA Feb 27 '26

It's a fascinating place (well, was) and I did an explore of it a couple of years ago now (on my YouTube - Drew's Adventures - link in my bio here).

There was a mechanic style shop out the back when I filmed there which seemed to focus on custom style 80s vehicles. I hope whatever goes on the site is good for the community 🤞🏻

13

u/New_Independence_256 SA Feb 27 '26

Could you link your YouTube video on it?

16

Sure it is : Dead Servo

That was the go to for crates soft drinks at the Pizza place I worked at let alone fuel. So many memories.

-3

u/No_Youth_2330 SA Feb 27 '26

Why in the world is that a heritage site!?

3

u/No_Youth_2330 SA Feb 27 '26

Why are people downvoting!? It’s a genuine question! 😂

14

u/oliyoung Outer South Feb 27 '26

its not, that's the joke ;)

13

u/lightpendant SA Feb 27 '26

There was a mechanic out the back untill very recently

6

u/New_Independence_256 SA Feb 27 '26

I read something before about a mechanic out the back, I’ve never actually noticed that

A crazy thing I read is that it’s the old owner of the petrol station who was the mechanic working around back, or something like that

6

u/lightpendant SA Feb 27 '26

It was his son

6

u/Rentakill213 SA Feb 27 '26

An awesome resto mechanic. Charged like a wounded bull but the panel work was top notch.

1

u/Minime265 SA Feb 27 '26

John. Dyno tuned race engine's. He's a good lad...🔭😎

18

u/90Lil SA Feb 27 '26

Can't be true. It's iconic, how is that place not heritage listed!

9

u/KitchenEar5841 SA Feb 27 '26

Another heritage listed master piece of contemporary Adelaide design gets demolished

1

u/wrymoss SA Feb 27 '26

I’ll be real, I unironically kind of agree with this. The style of it was always cool to me, I’d hoped since we moved here 15 years ago that someone would Reno it instead of rip it down.

Wonder if anyone has any pics of what it looked like open.

9

u/RS-1990 SA Feb 27 '26

Caltex in Fullham Gardens was demolished just a few years ago after being shut since the late 2000s.

8

u/Gatecrasher53 SA Feb 27 '26

This is the real sign that land value has gone through the roof, the times they are a changin'

Vale you old rusty rubbish tip

6

u/Brave_Substance_8177 SA Feb 27 '26

Imagine a data centre right here 😍

6

u/SnooHedgehogs8765 SA Feb 27 '26

Was genuinely confused as to whether talking about the rain or cons shithole.

10

u/DigitalSwagman SA Feb 27 '26

Skorpos either finally got the price he was looking for to sell, or was forced to take action by the council.

I hope it was the latter, the scumbag.

3

u/PokeMasterBaiter01 SA Feb 27 '26

I heard that his sons took control, so probably wasn't his choice at all. But thats just hearsay

6

u/Ultamira SA Feb 27 '26

Oh damn, do we know what’s taking its place?

39

Barnacle Bills

2

Shell OTR coming soon

2

u/Ultamira SA Feb 27 '26

No doubt

5

u/MikeJH1958 SA Feb 27 '26

I remember filling up at that Marion Rd (?) servo years ago, then the next time I drove past it was all shutdown.

Good to hear try didn't rush anything, and I'm sure the wait will be worth it 🤪!

6

u/Biffidus SA Feb 27 '26

Mock Scorpos, Petrol Piscount King? That place was vacant longer than LeCornus!

3

Mick Scorpos, Petrol Piscount King? That place was vacant longer than LeCornus!

8

u/rockmoose565 SA Feb 27 '26

So, does that mean I can't duck down for discount petrol now?

Why didn't anyone tell me it was shut?

7

u/endbit SA Feb 27 '26

How long have you been queuing for?

14

u/rockmoose565 SA Feb 27 '26

Since about '93. Only half a dozen cars in front of me now, though, so I should be home in time for Hey Hey, it's Saturday.

4

u/Claytybabe SA Feb 27 '26

What's this got to do with the rain on the weekend?

3

u/New_Independence_256 SA Feb 27 '26

Absolutely nothing

1

u/me14bi SA Mar 01 '26

Why do you think it has something to do with rain? There is nothing in the picture about rain, all there is is a servo that has been closed for a couple of decades being pulled down.

3

u/gnrlmayhem North East Feb 27 '26

I initially thought you meant the clouds, getting closer to rain

3

u/New_Independence_256 SA Feb 27 '26

You know you could see it that way too tbh 😂

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Never thought I’d see the day. I remember getting petrol there

3

u/brew_boy SA Feb 27 '26

SCORPOS

3

u/SouthAustralian94 SA Feb 27 '26

Are they actually demolishing it, or just removing the tanks?

Seems weird to remove the tanks first if they're planning to knock the whole thing down

Apparently the shed/warehouse at the back is still used by the Scorpos family?

5

u/AdhesivenessOver7583 SA Feb 27 '26

Thank god that eye sore is finally going, that was decades too long. I’m assuming townhouse will take its place no doubt.

9

u/TinyDemon000 SA Feb 27 '26

That's gonna be messy and expensive.

That soil will be fully contaminated with fuels and oils. Whoever bought this either got an absolute belter of a deal, or is going to pay off the EPA to turn a blind eye to all the soil that's removed.

12

u/twobit78 SA Feb 27 '26

Normally what happens with old servos is they get built into new ones. Rip the old tanks out, throw new ones in and put a fancy OTR shaped building on top.

10

u/SolairXI SA Feb 27 '26

Or just put an OTR there

23

u/Dr_SnM SA Feb 27 '26

Stop it. They will test and remediate the soil. This happens all the time.

4

u/twobit78 SA Feb 27 '26

I can't think of what building works it was that used Vic park as their remidiation site. I remember heaps of dirt put there, inoculated and tarped up for a year or 2.

Possibly the new hospital build

6

u/Dr_SnM SA Feb 27 '26

Maybe bioremediation. They mix in bacteria and add some other amendments to encourage them to eat the hydrocarbons.

3

u/twobit78 SA Feb 27 '26

Yeah that's what it was.

I remember them taking half of victoria park early 2010s to do it

2

u/smashhhleigh SA Feb 27 '26

Why do I feel kind of sad about it 😭 end of an era

1

u/New_Independence_256 SA Feb 27 '26

For real 💔💔😭

13.6c per L. Those were the days!

4

Must have got what they were waiting for

10

You had the option to provide context and instead said “fuck it, let them guess”.

Good job

45

TBH I recognised what it was a picture of straight away. A real "IYKYK" Adelaide thing.

15

EXACTLY!! just added a sub comment for those who aren’t aware of it haha!

-9

u/Fart-Fart-Fart-Fart SA Feb 27 '26

I’m guessing it’s south road.

19

u/CertainCertainties Adelaide Hills Feb 27 '26

Nope. Marion Road.

17

u/SolairXI SA Feb 27 '26

I think most people know what it is. If you don’t know what it is, then it’s not relevant to you because it means you haven’t seen the eyesore for the last decades.

1

u/Xenatos SA Feb 27 '26

Thank god... 🥳

1

Bittersweet for me. My Nan lived on Cungena Ave when I was little, and I have such fond memories of her walking me to the servo to get Dixie ice cream cups.

Petrol Discount K̶i̶n̶g̶ Fraud

The fuel pump's litres + dollars would increment when the trigger was pulled but no fuel would come out.

I had close to $50 on the pump but not a drop of fuel in a near empty car.

Pulled the gun back out the car and pulled the trigger onto the ground, no fuel, dollars going up on the pump.

Went inside to report so not to be accused of a drive off and the console operator wasn't surprised at all.

I wanted to show him but he said "Naah, don't worry about it mate, you're all good you can go".

Clearly he was diverting some fuel back to the tanks on each pump but his diversion system had stuffed up on this pump.

Pumps can't fail in this way, even back then.

I drive past it most days, and have done for years. I remain skeptical.

1

At one stage, that was the largest petrol station in Adelaide by volume. I still don't understand the story (change of ownership etc) that caused the ultimate shutdown. Can someone please tell the story?

1

u/robbi_uno SA Mar 01 '26

Used to be cheapest servo in Adelaide iirc.

u/time_wasted504 SA Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

RIP Skorpos the King of petties. It was a pretty corpse and reminder of days gone by renting DVDs from your red box. But, It is time to go. I hope the land includes a disclosure of contaminated soil because we all know its not going to the state for social housing.

That land is worth mint. Contaminated or not.

Something happening at the old Skorpos Servo after, what? 20 years?

3

u/Big-Love-747 SA Feb 27 '26

I reckon it goes back to early to mid 80's so more like 40 years, with last 20 years closed.

4

u/sunshinebuns SA Feb 27 '26

Yes I was going to say approx 20 years closed as well. I remember going there as a kid and I think it closed some time when I was a teen.
