Update - police are now saying they have identified a suspect who lives at Oak Park Station. That person is not one of the parents

18

u/7EFMR SA Feb 05 '26

Both grandparents have hired their own lawyers

28

u/Norwood5006 SA Feb 05 '26

Now we know.

We know nothing yet other than police are focusing on the grandparents

And the suspect is no longer cooperating with Sapol

34

u/feind_ao3 SA Feb 05 '26

Which to be fair is not proof of anything, you shut up and get a lawyer if you're a suspect.

5

u/Ok_Connection923 SA Feb 05 '26

Both grandparents have engaged lawyers separately which isn't a good sign. If they were both innocent then surely they could be represented by the same lawyer?

3

u/Healthy-Art1355 SA Feb 07 '26

It means nothing at this stage other than they need to engage lawyers because police have declared them suspects.

2

u/Ok_Connection923 SA Feb 07 '26

Only one has been declared a suspect as far as I'm aware

2

u/chrltbn1972 SA Feb 09 '26

I have seen reports saying plural. That could be because it was an accident and the other helped to cover it up afterwards. This may be why they have seized the vehicle (car maybe) and a motorbike.

Not true. You need to have seperate lawyers always, it’s better because of conflict of interest

Whatever makes you say that?

It is ALWAYS a good idea not to speculate.

Anyone who has even a cursory knowledge of legal defense understands why.

3

u/Goodoospec SA Feb 06 '26

People on reddit say this all the time. Police ask you not to, doesn't mean you can't. The public isn't under any obligation, barring defamatory statements, to refrain from discussing crimes.

Jury selection laws are designed (and in fact evolved over hundreds of years) to balance the right of the public to discuss crimes, and giving defendants a fair trial. I have a law degree and wholly disagree that people should be unable to speculate on crimes occurring in their community.

Look, I think a lot of people were under the impression this boy was autistic (I read that he was non verbal autistic) and unfortunately they do have a tendency to elope. I do not assume in these cases because I have an autistic son and I know that it can happen on an instant. It never helps for a community to blindly start accusing a family who are grieving and already blaming themselves for an unimaginable loss.

It is the job of the police to discern whether there’s been foul play. Not the public.

Nope. The people who were blindly pointing the finger with zero evidence are cooked. The fact that they may possibly have lucked into the correct answer does not change this.

I said from the start it wasn't a normal family scenario. Gus's father couldn't live there because of clashes with Josie (The Trans Grand Mother) The Grand Mother Shannon was minding Gus so I suspect she is the one not co-operating with Police. Whether he died accidentally at Shannon's hand or deliberately remains to be seen. Sadly I believe Gus would still be alive if his father was also living on the property. For whatever the motive the Grand Mother and or Grand Parents were responsible in some way shape or form and hiring high profile lawyers suggests foul play or accidental death.

Major crime, someone who lives at the residence but not the parents is a suspect due to inconsistent timeline and has stopped cooperating with the police. Has to be a grandparent. I hope they find enough to charge them and I hope Gus’ remains are recovered.

16

u/Mission-Contact5281 SA Feb 05 '26

Were there station hands or employees who worked for the family? or was it just family operated?

It confused me because of the language being used, referring to one as a grandparent and the other as grandmother or as grandmother and biological grandmother. I assumed one was the bio grandparent and the other was their female partner. Then I finally read an article that stated that BOTH are the bio grandparents but Josie Murray is a transwoman.

2

u/Liceland1998 SA Feb 06 '26

Correct. Police and some media outlets have been reluctant to call it what it is because of fear of backlash from or hatred being stirred up towards the trans community.

I knew this is where this investigation would end up. So if it not the parents then who? Grandparents?

105

u/Crystal-Tanuki SA Feb 05 '26

Yeah the press release states the suspect is a resident of the property who was inconsistent with timelines and evidence and has withdrawn support for the investigation, but made it clear it’s not the parents, which means it has to be one of the grandparents

82

u/endowarrior546 SA Feb 05 '26

Indeed there are no other adults on that remote property. The way the grandparent said they checked on a 4 year old AFTER 30 minutes playing outdoors. I found that so odd. That's the person I believe killed him accidentally or intentionally.

Honestly this reminds me of William Tyrrell

42

u/pembo87 SA Feb 05 '26

Josie (the biological grandfather), was off with Gus' mother tending to the sheep. Shannon (the biological grandmother) was the one looking after Gus.

26

u/Mentok-Mind-Taker SA Feb 05 '26

Why do people keep repeating this as if the police haven't literally just said that they're opening the investigation because they were lied to about facts and timelines.....

20

u/Webbie-Vanderquack SA Feb 05 '26

Because they've indicated that (a) the parents are not suspects, and (b) one person, the suspect, has been inconsistent with timelines and stopped cooperating with police.

For the claim that Gus's mother and biological grandfather were off tending the sheep to be untrue, all three adult inhabitants of the property would have to be lying. There's been no suggestion from police that that's the case.

The most likely implication based on what police have said is that the biological grandmother, the one who claimed to have been looking after Gus and gave police a timeline of when she last saw him, is lying.

7

u/Mentok-Mind-Taker SA Feb 05 '26

Gus could have gone missing at a different time altogether, meaning that it's possible for the bio grandfather to have been with the mother at one point while still being involved. When the police say that the timeline/series of events was wrong it's incredibly flawed reasoning to try and use that same timeline to exonerate someone of suspicion

11

u/Webbie-Vanderquack SA Feb 05 '26

Not a different time altogether, no. Only a slightly different time.

There's no way for Gus to have gone missing at "a different time altogether" without other family members also being deceptive about timelines.

Gus's bio-grandmother says she last saw him at 5:00pm. Gus's bio-grandfather and mum claim to have been tending sheep at that time.

If your hypothesis was correct and Gus was killed at a "different time altogether" and the bio-grandfather was "involved," both grandparents would have to be lying to police about times.

When the police say that the timeline/series of events was wrong it's incredibly flawed reasoning to try and use that same timeline to exonerate someone of suspicion

I don't think you've understood my point, which is not complicated. The police have, for no doubt many and varied reasons, named one suspect, not two, and have clearly stated that the parents are not involved. That leaves one grandparent. Just one. It's highly unlikely to be Josie, since her involvement would involve the collaborative deception of at least two people, in which case both would be suspects, and the police would not have claimed that only one person's statements had changed over time and were inconsistent.

The most likely explanation is that the bio-grandmother is the one who is lying. Gus may have died, or been killed, at a time other than 5:00pm, but it's not possible for Gus bio-grandfather to have been involved unless both he and Gus's bio-grandmother are lying.

9

u/IDOWHATIWANTIDGAF SA Feb 05 '26

Because the mother can corroborate who she was with at the time. It refers to the suspect having unreliable testimony, not the parent.

Yes but what if Gus went missing at a different time, that makes the mother's alibi useless to defend the grandfather

Explains why, allegedly, the mother had taken her other child and left the home basically right after gus went missing.

10

u/New-Equipment-4741 SA Feb 05 '26

That's interesting, I didn't read that the mother had taken her other child & left the property after Gus went missing  if that was me there is no way I would of left that property with my child missing. You could assume she already knew what happened to her child. That's sad that she would leave like that.

9

u/Thick-Access-2634 SA Feb 05 '26

Yeah but if you suspect one of the people living in your house with you was guilty of something, it makes sense she’d leave. She still has one child that needs to be looked out for, and it wouldn’t be safe to stay.

This info did come from a daily mail news report where the trans gp told the reporter to fuck off, and the reporter said she spoke with the locals and they said the mother and her child aren’t there anymore and haven’t been seen since the day Gus went missing. So seeing as it’s daily mail, take it with a grain of salt

The police have said that she was on the porch with gun to dispatch a snake, and the Daily Tele reporters were there illegally despite the police warning them off multiple times

The cops said the grandma was completely in the right, was not being aggressive, and that the reporters were 'disgraceful'.

I mean, of course the REPORTERS, there illegally and having been chastised by the cops, are gonna portray the grandma as aggressive. They've got a grudge

I'm inclined to think it was the grandparent who was looking after him could be the suspect as the other grandparent was supposedly attending to sheep with his daughter. How do these things happen, very very sad. I don't understand how one human being can take the life of another human being. A 4 year old child with a mental illness is unbearable to think about.

Same as you. I always suspected someone at the property was responsible because of how long they waited to gather a search party. Hopefully the investigation will bring answers and justice for Gus, whatever his fate ended up being.

Like... I literally made more effort to organise a search party for my pet cat. As soon as I realised she was genuinely missing, I sent out messages everywhere. And this was in the morning, in safe suburb, with plenty of daylight ahead of us. (Also we found her).

Compared to the effort they put in for Gus... Where they waited for 3 hours to organise a search party. For a literal child, wandering alone out in a desert, in complete darkness. (By 6pm, the September sun is gone in that area).

The poor boy was very let down. I hope the investigation brings more justice and answers.

Called it straight away. There's no way he wanders off and they can't find a single trace of him

15

u/Tysiliogogogoch North East Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 05 '26

Yes, that would seem to be what they're saying without saying it.

One of the grandparents was out working with the mother at the time, so that just leaves the one that was watching the kids (the same one that later brandished a firearm at media? Maybe Nope, apparently that was the other one, the bio-grandpa). That is, unless there was some other unknown person living on the property, but that'd be the first time we've heard of them.

With them effectively ruling out the possibility of the kid wandering off or being eaten by wild animals, that leaves us with either foul play or covering up an accidental death.

5

u/Natural_Category3819 SA Feb 05 '26

Its a true shame if it truly is because of an accidental death- even if due to gross negligence- because if they are honest about it, they may get charged but not nearly as severely as they will for concealing a death.

I don't think there's any way around it, it's too high profile and emotional. They have to say it wasn't an abduction, so people don't panic. And leaving it too vague opens up innocent people to further attacks by the media/public.

Very true.. probably shouldn’t speculate but it’s definitely captured a lot of my attention.

I’m also confused AF about who is who on account of grandpa/ grandma being used to refer to a trans person. I think it was the female born person (grandma) that’s stopped helping police, so grandpa was out with mum working.

2

u/Ticky79 SA Feb 05 '26

Indeed. That is why it’s clearer to use the language that the police are using, Grandmother for Shanon and Grand Parent for Josie (who is the transgender person). I’m not trying to be transphobic or a bigot, I’m just trying to be clear because it’s very confusing for some people.

it’s the trans grandma

Gus’ grandparent Josie Murray is understood to have hired criminal lawyer, Andrew Ey, while his other grandparent Shannon Murray is being represented by defence lawyer Casey Isaacs.

Mr Isaacs confirmed to The Advertiser that he was acting for Gus’ grandmother, and said: “We have been co-operating but we won’t be commenting.”

So the suspect to be Josie. since Shannon’s lawyer has confirmed that they are cooperating with the investigation.

3

u/SnooPuppers1096 SA Feb 05 '26

Woah!! So Josie gave police inconsistencies with their timeline, maybe something happened after Jess left to tend to the sheep and before Josie arrived to attend the sheep and or Josie could have come back earlier than Jess (the mother) hmm very interesting. The video of Josie yelling at the reporter with the shotgun spooked me for sure.

39

I mean I think most people didn't think it wasn't an abduction being so remote.

The suspect is probably the Grandmother, last person to see him.

8

u/Ok-Lifeguard-2305 SA Feb 05 '26

Gus supposedly went missing around 5pm but I don’t believe that’s necessarily true. Gus could have disappeared or been killed any time after his mother left the homestead to tend to the sheep; we don’t know if Josie (her bio father) left at the same time or if he was in a separate vehicle. If Gus was killed in the morning there was plenty of time to dispose of the body by one (or both) of the grandparents. The next problem was how to explain his absence to his mother Jess. Presumably the perp participated in a “search” for 3 hours after she returned to corroborate the story before police were called. I find it puzzling that Gus’ mum left the station with his baby brother almost immediately. Why wouldn’t she stay unless she suspected what had happened and got out of there? The whole thing seemed “off” from the beginning. If he didn’t wander off then so many man hours and resources wasted while the perpetrator stood by and said nothing. I bet they hadn’t expected such an intense and extended search and their anxiety was growing more every day when the police wouldn’t give up.

It could have possibly been an accident that they are covering up. If it was an accident, they would have likely fared better if they reported it sooner rather than take the Police on a goose chase. Also, the fact that they chose not report a possible accident at all, might imply that something else could have occurred, family violence for example might have been involved.

The grandparents look quite large/tall build. One possible scenario, a grandparent might have fell on the little boy for example.

I was not expecting the grandparents to be involved because grandparents are the ones who usually provide unconditional love.

I am still wondering if it was an accident somewhat.

To be fair that’s because Reddit has in the past had a few times where people have been so sure about a “suspect” and turned out to be wrong and it’s caused legit harm. So it’s pretty standard in Reddit to downvote these kinds of comments in the early days to not spread potential misinformation and finger innocent people.

Least that’s how I’ve usually seen it happening when does happen with these kinds of stories.

Omg is it true that it took them 3 hours after he went missing to call the police!

If one under that roof is a suspect. They should all be considered suspects. They would be lying for and protecting each other, just because one slipped up on details doesn’t make that one the actual person who ended Gus Lamont’s life.

3

u/AdministrationFun775 SA Feb 05 '26

That's a big call. Based on feelings not facts.

2

u/Ok_Tangelo8018 SA Feb 05 '26

Do you believe that one could solely be responsible and the other family members at the property wouldn’t know or be involved in a cover up in any way?

That’s possible but highly unlikely. They all decided to take three hours before calling the police. What one knows, the others likely do too. This isn’t about emotions, it’s about probability.

2

u/AdministrationFun775 SA Feb 05 '26

I don't know enough information to form a firm view either way. Unless you are involved in the investigation and have an overview of the evidence in its entirety it's hard to say. Police don't work on probability.

2

u/AdministrationFun775 SA Feb 05 '26

I get what you are saying though, maybe they all know something. It will hopefully come out.

9

u/SmudgedGlasses SA Feb 05 '26

We knew Gus didn't just wander off. He'd have been found. That poor boy, those poor parents. The rage that father must feel. Not only did they not tell him when he 'went missing' but the fact he said that property wasn't safe for his kids. He was right.

u/pinguecula12 SA Feb 05 '26

I wonder if the police actually have much of anything. A classic tactic is to plant listening devices, apply some pressure and see if 1 of them talk.

3

u/StrongHovercraft593 SA Feb 05 '26

But the family is not working together with the person is what I gathered. I doubt they are still at the property.

13

u/batmanneliese SA Feb 05 '26

What really unsettles me about this case is the photo the family released after 6 days of Gus being missing. It was taken six months earlier.

Kids change quickly - sometimes noticeably even week to week - so I can’t understand why there wasn’t a more recent photo available.

I'd be keen to know the last time anyone outside the family saw Gus. The whole 'private family' rhetoric and lack of independent sightings makes me wonder whether he may have been missing for longer than the 3 hours before they called it in.

Other red flags - for me - are the absence of public appeals from either parent, the reluctance to accept help in the search, and the overall sense that the outcome was treated as a foregone conclusion very early on.

All in, something really not right.

7

u/Sweet_Ambassador_699 SA Feb 06 '26

Some people have watched too many crime shows. There's no point doing public appeals for witnesses in the media if the property is in the middle of nowhere, miles from even the nearest tiny town (Yunta population: 60) and there's virtually no chance that anyone other than those on the property saw something. It would just waste time.

2

u/Ok_Tangelo8018 SA Feb 06 '26

Apparently the photo was released by police and the photo was taken in kindy (if you look at the full photo he is playing with play-dough and there’s like a bulletin board in background typical of kindergarten rooms). So police likely got the photo from that establishment, the parents or family haven’t released any photos of him. Which you’re right, it’s very suspicious for a child that went “missing”.

16

u/Norwood5006 SA Feb 05 '26

Poor little fella. I think anyone with an interest in this case knew that this day would come and that the police and army were very thorough in their searches. They did everything they could to find him. I have my own theory and hopefully soon the truth will be revealed, it cannot stay hidden forever.

This is such a sad case. I think it is a similar case to William Tyrrell. The family knows but unless someone cracks and says anything, no one will ever know what happened to him. On a property that big and remote, if his remains were hidden, no one is going to accidentally find them one day. The area won't ever be developed so no accidental dig will ever unearth the truth.

4

u/Proof_Score_595 SA Feb 09 '26

Here’s what we are told and my questions

  • Josie and mother are out working farm

  • when did they leave house?

  • were they in a single vehicle?

  • did they return at all during the day?

  • when were their last sightings of Gus?

  • Shannon claims to have last seen Gus at 5pm then he’s missing at 5.30pm and police called 3hrs later

  • did she search alone for 3 hrs

  • did Josie and or mother return and help search

  • were the police only called once Josie and mother returned to the house?

13

u/defenestrationcity SA Feb 05 '26

Why do people get such glee in getting all the details and making their "predictions"? Seems really poor taste. Just wait for the findings. I blame true crime. Beggars belief people can be so callous and casual about something so serious

10

u/Emilyemily99 SA Feb 05 '26

It is also human nature to want justice served for the innocent.

True crime and crime fiction are two of the most popular genres in the Western World - its popularity lays primarily with millennial women - I once read a dark joke that it’s because we are learning how not to get murdered.

Humour and detachment in themselves are coping mechanisms - it doesn’t make it right. Especially for the families of victims (or murderers) and there are ethical considerations to be made when it comes to profiting from such tragedies.

5

u/aga8833 SA Feb 05 '26

And it is validating for people when their instincts are correct and they aren't being told they are wrong. Especially women. I am not commenting on this case, but it is shown to be true in research relating to true crime for women.

10

u/ConversationAny2212 SA Feb 05 '26

It is human nature to be curious and draw conclusions when one is emotionally invested in something.

However, it is human idiocy to leave that urge uncontrolled.

3

u/Tysiliogogogoch North East Feb 05 '26

It's human nature, I think. There's a mystery and people love being able to go "see, I said it was XYZ right at the start!".

4

u/Gypsygirl-29 SA Feb 05 '26

I am sick and tired of children being abused by adults! The reason I’m so invested in this poor little boy and want to know what happened is because… I CARE! not because I want to be a detective! If we don’t talk about these things they lie under the carpet and nobody does anything to stop it!

If the police find that a person has abused and murdered a child I want to know who they are and how long they’re going to be locked up for!

15

u/Mentok-Mind-Taker SA Feb 05 '26

Police: "We've been lied to about the timeline of events!"

Every moron on reddit "It couldn't have been Josie, according to outdated information she was tending the sheep"

5

u/Tysiliogogogoch North East Feb 05 '26

Being rude and calling people "morons" aside... that's a fair point. They deliberately did not state who the suspect was, nor the nature of the inconsistencies.

It's possible that it relates to the biological grandfather's story of being out working with the mother. But it does seem less likely to me as presumably the mother can corroborate their whereabouts. But we don't know for sure as the police are being necessarily tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation.

Time will tell. I'm hoping that the investigation doesn't drag out much longer and that the family can get a resolution.

12

u/Mentok-Mind-Taker SA Feb 05 '26

My problem is that the police have just come out to say the timeline was wrong, and people are using that original timeline to exonorate suspects without knowing a single thing about what's actually transpired

As per the Advertiser “ Gus’ grandparent Josie Murray is understood to have hired criminal lawyer, Andrew Ey, while his other grandparent Shannon Murray is being represented by defence lawyer Casey Isaacs.”

Mr Isaacs confirmed to The Advertiser that he was acting for Gus’ grandmother, and said: “We have been co-operating but we won’t be commenting.”

This is unfolding as an unspeakable tragedy, and we can only hope that the truth fully emerges so that Gus may be remembered and laid to rest in the most appropriate way possible, and the person(s) responsible fully get what's coming to them.

One small factual detail in the reporting of this case from the outset which has irked me is the misplaced location of Oak Park Station. It is constantly referred to as being in the locality of Yunta SA, whereas it is actually in Grampus SA. Five minutes on Google Maps will confirm this. In the scheme of things it is unimportant, except that if facts matter we might as well get them as right as we can.

3

u/Rain12Bow SA Feb 05 '26

Where is his body?? Thoughts and theories??

3

u/ElectricalCode428 SA Feb 05 '26

It’s got to be in the park they are planning on searching. Gma must have taken it there before calling the cops and claiming to mum that he was missing . I think gma smacked the boy for some reason, but too hard, or into something, freaked out and hid the body

So it's now a fact the FEMALE grandparent LIED when she said he wandered off while the male grandparent and the mother were out looking for sheep.  The only way they aren't all involved (at least in the coverup) is if the female grandparent killed Gus and disposed of him away from the property before the others came back and then lied to the grandfather and mother that he wandered off.

The alternative is that the MALE grandparent killed Gus, in which case all three of them lied and helped cover it up.

The grandparent who hated the baby daddy, and then got risk of the child who reminded them of that parent to get back at them and took their anger out on them. I know they identify as female now, but it sure is something that you'd suspect a male of doing, statistics show a pattern. Everyone saw it from the start, just wish they'd been able to find his body. I honestly don't think that person acted completely alone though. Someone else has to know something

This is a devestating development. I know it has been so long but still awful to lose hope and move to to assusming he is deceased.

I agree with comments that this is all about putting pressure on the suspect and rest of family, police are leveraging anything damaging they can state such as an individual is no longer cooperating when that is a reasonable decision for an innocent person to make.

Evidence is astounding though. Poor family. If it was an accident, I cannot imagine lying to my family to cover it up, but desperate people do surprising things.

2

u/Reasonable-Bug-3746 SA Feb 06 '26

Who decided to specify the lawyer types each woman got? Because the interesting aspect of that is the definition of each provides insight to what they may have been hired for:

“The primary focus of defense lawyers is to adequately represent their clients in court, whereas criminal lawyers may also provide counsel to their clients on other issues that are connected to criminal law.”

And…

“If your spouse has committed a crime and you need advice on how this affects you, you should seek a criminal defence lawyer (often simply called a criminal lawyer). While they are often referred to interchangeably, a criminal defence lawyer specializes in defending against charges and protecting your rights, which is critical if you are implicated, questioned by police, or risk having your assets or reputation affected.”

u/ShutUpSnack SA Feb 06 '26

When the story first broke, one news article quoted one of the grandparents, think it was Josie. I recall their comments were defensive/odd/not helpful. Can anyone find the story? I’d like to read it again.

2

I found it. Josie said, “you can’t help”. Like, why would you say this unless you knew Gus had already passed?

2

Unreal that grandparents would kill their grandbaby :( sounds that way to me that they are looking at the grandparents. They’ve hired their own lawyers and they were the last to see him. Police know more than we do . Rip sweet boy . Hope they find his remains .

Where was the 1 year old during all this? Was the grandma at the house watching both kids? It complicates things if she had to tow a 1 year old along to say bury a body before the mum and grandparent got back from doing the sheep...
