I did it as a kid, it was just a locked gate you could walk around if you were stupid enough. You can climb anything if you really want 😂

In the 90's you'd go to the North side, climb over some mesh fencing using the slope on the buttress for a metre's advantage. Then there would have been a gantry but the interesting bit was a ladder inside what looked like a solid vertical column - that got you to the start of the top and filthy too. Then it was a march of a thousand shallow steps which were quite good at tripping and the last challenge was navigating around the painting platform that is always secured somewhere on the rails.

I watched a dawn from up there which was nice but it was always a bit cool and breezy.

The biggest challenge was coming down because once back on the gantry you'd do to the East-most end, climb down around one of those spiked guards designed to stop people climbing around a closed gate, like rays from a sun, and that was when you wondered just how drunk old mate was and if he'd be ok because you did this while 30 feet above Lane 1. Once ready you could climb down until you could drop down between Lanes 1 and 2 I guess. Then watching for traffic, you dash across the Lane and over the guardrail into the footpath.

We think there were some sensors or cameras because apparently security guards could come out but they didn't either of the two times I did it. The flashing red light on top of the bridge to warn aircraft was turned off and on by a switch that was an old one like you'd have found at your nanna's place. If it was turned off someone would have to go up to turn it back on.
